Jane makes a shock announcement. Steven concocts a plan to clear Emma’s name once and for all.

Extended Summary

Grant checks Jane is certain about leaving the police as they return to the school. Having seen Paul’s flyer at the Diner, Vicki tells him that she can get him a job painting boats with her father. Steven asks Paul what Emma is going to say; he must have a death wish!

At the store, Alf thinks Marilyn is too old to go back to school. Jane arrives and Marilyn tells her she’s planning to get her HSC so she can join the police force. Jane reveals that she is leaving the force and Marilyn comments on how Jane is leaving because she has found the man of her dreams, while Marilyn has given up looking; when you do find the right guy you’re never quite what they’re looking for. This appears to have hit a nerve with Jane.

Grant arrives at Summer Bay House as Pippa is doing the laundry and tells her about Jane resigning. Pippa takes Jane’s fresh sheets to her caravan and Jane assures Pippa that their conversation didn’t sway her decision. Pippa says it gave her some things to think about; if she’d had Jane’s opportunities then things could have been very different now Tom has gone. Pippa leaves and Jane looks wistfully at a photo of her police graduation.

Emma arrives at the store where Alf and Adam are making fun of Marilyn’s plans. Adam’s next stop is the Diner where he laughs about it with Matt and Steven. Vicki comes in and tells Paul he has got the job. Paul goes to the store and breaks the news to Emma who asks if Vicki had anything to do with this. Paul lies, saying he saw an advert in the paper.

Steven talks to Paul as he starts scraping a boat (that was quick!) but Vicki appears and tells Steven to rack off because Paul is there to work. Later, she flirts with Paul, asking if he wants to go and see Back to the Future II.

At the beach house, Marilyn gets fed up with Adam’s teasing, as well as his dirty clothes lying around the place. Matt tells Adam to give Marilyn a break because she’s really serious about this. Adam tells Marilyn he just doesn’t think she’s cut out for the police.

Having doubts, Marilyn visits Jane at the caravan and asks what being in the police is really like. Jane tells her about all the things they don’t prepare you for, but there’s a rush of adrenaline that makes you think you can get through anything; there’s nothing like it. It’s clear to Marilyn that Jane doesn’t really want to quit, unbeknown to Grant who tells Matt after a surf that his whole life is set. Alone, Jane irons her uniform and replays recent conversations in her head.

Paul is at Summer Bay House in the evening and asks Steven what he should do about Vicki’s flirting. He would quit, but he needs the money, and he doesn’t want Vicki to tell Emma the truth about how he got the job. Steven suggests he string Vicki along to get her to admit she set Emma up and got her expelled. Paul isn’t keen and would want Emma to be in on it but Steven says they need Emma to be genuinely furious in order for Vicki to buy it!

The following morning at the caravan park, Jane tells Grant she needs some space. She’s going to go and stay with Carol in Yabbie Creek and doesn’t know how long for.

Walking to school, Paul catches up with Vicki and tells her he’s free tonight. They plan to meet at the diner. Steven tells him he’s in, and Paul says yes, right up to his neck! If he goes down then Steven is coming with him.
