Viv and Emma’s night out has disastrous consequences for the friends and Adam’s charter trip does not turn out as he expected.

Extended Summary

At the Diner, Ailsa explains to Carly about the babysitter falling sick. Emma says her goodbyes and Carly asks Ailsa why she can’t babysit. Ailsa says Emma’s arranged to go out with Viv and she wants to give her a bit of rope before pressing the issue. At their table, Adam and Matt discuss Millicent. Adam asks Matt to let Carly carry on thinking that Millicent is an old woman, although he can’t help making a few wisecracks when an oblivious Carly joins them. Matt jokes that he should join Adam as a deck hand.

Emma goes round for Viv and meets Don, who says he’s glad they’re friends. He suggests they stay for a coffee, pointing out they’ve got plenty of time to get to the dance. Emma realises he thinks they’re going to the hall and plays along. Don offers to drive them but Viv points out how embarrassing that would be and he lets them go.

Adam asks Stacey about the movie she went to see, asking why she went on her own when she could easily get a date. Stacey points out she’s with Andrew and says she believes in monogamy. Adam doesn’t but admits Carly doesn’t feel the same and gets jealous. He adds that Carly’s too crazy about him to go off with anyone else. At the Diner, Alf is annoyed that his and Ailsa’s plans have been scuppered. Carly comes up with an idea: Since it’s quiet, she can go and babysit once Bobby gets there. In return, she asks for two days off to join Adam on his charter. Alf and Ailsa agree.

Viv gets home at one o’clock, somewhat the worse for wear, to be confronted by an angry Don who tells her the disco ended at eleven and he knows she wasn’t there since he went looking for her. He realises she’s been drinking and demands an explanation but Viv runs out to throw up. Next morning, Don quizzes Viv over breakfast and she admits she and Emma went to the Midnight Swing. He is further horrified to learn they hitch-hiked there, getting a lift from an old lady and her husband, before being driven back by some friends of Emma’s. He tells her that Emma’s a bad influence and she’s not to see her again.

Carly turns up at Adam’s with a two man tent, telling him she’s joining him on his charter and they can spend time together after they’ve dropped Millicent off on the island. Adam sees his plans being scuppered and tells her to get her things together and meet him at one thirty. Stacey suspects something is up and her suspicions are confirmed when Adam leaves a lot earlier. She points out Carly will come there looking for him so Adam rings Matt and asks him to cover.

Emma is playing loud music at the Diner and is scornful when Ailsa tells her Carly babysat for them. Viv arrives and tells Emma that Don’s told her they can’t be friends anymore but Emma doesn’t care. Viv says Don’s been good to her and given her a roof over her head but Emma thinks he just did that to look good and she doesn’t owe him anything.

Adam meets Millicent on the wharf but is somewhat put out to learn her bodyguards are accompanying them. Once they’ve got underway, Millicent sends them below and tells Adam that her parents were always afraid of her being kidnapped and she inherited a fortune. They share a kiss. Carly turns up at the flat and Stacey has to tell her that Adam left at eleven. Carly wonders why he didn’t ring her and Stacey suggests the phone might be out of order. However, Carly says they’ve had phone calls that morning.

Ailsa goes to the store and Alf tells her that Don’s been in and told him about where Viv and Emma went. He admits he ended up sticking up for Emma when Don accused her of corrupting Viv and banned them from seeing each other. Ailsa says they’re together at the Diner. Alf says that Emma needs to learn she’s part of a family and a community and has to do right by those around her. Don turns up at the Diner to find Viv and Emma chatting with two other girls and is annoyed with Viv for disobeying him. Emma says Viv should make her own choices and he’s violating her rights as an individual but Don returns that she’s in his care and he has to keep her away from the wrong influences. Don and Viv leave as Emma calls out it’s not over. Carly arrives and sits with Matt, asking him about Adam. Matt says Millicent changed the time and Carly’s phone was engaged when Adam tried to ring her. Carly believes him.

Arriving at the island, Millicent leaves her bodyguards on the beach while she and Adam go and find a quiet spot. Once there, she suggests she tells the guards, Harry and Charlie, to wait on the boat so they can be alone together. Adam waits for her to return but, when he’s been there a while, he heads down to the beach. There, he sees the boat sailing off, leaving him stranded on the island…
