Derrick was first glimpsed at the end of 4811 as a shadowy figure watching Geoff and Nicole arrive on Jackson Island.He made his full debut in the following episode when he turned up at the pair’s campsite, revealing he’d been shipwrecked during a storm and had lost his cargo.The pair were extremely uncomfortable with his presence, especially when he started talking about the people he’d killed and how he could still see their faces.When Geoff tried to call for help, Derrick smashed the radio.Nicole tried to slip away and hide in the bushes but Derrick found her and brought her back.Geoff tackled him and a chase through the bush ended with Derrick accidentally stabbing himself in the leg.Geoff and Nicole spent the night hiding out in the bush but when they returned they found Derrick had stolen their boat and Geoff’s clothes.Derrick was then seen back on the mainland talking to someone on the phone about what happened, explaining that he was going to lie low and advising they did the same.
Derrick reappeared six months later when Xavier and Ruby saw him fighting with Hugo outside Hugo’s boat shed.Xavier tried to intervene but Derrick pushed him away, causing him to hit his head on a metal post and fall unconscious into the water.While Brendan helped Xavier, Ruby also tried to intervene but Derrick pushed her aside and ran off.Hugo claimed he had found Derrick breaking into his boat shed and Constable Watson found a log book of boat journeys that wasn’t Hugo’s in the shed.It was becoming obvious that the sunken ship discovered near the island was Derrick’s and his “cargo” was the twelve illegal immigrants found drowned in the hold.When Wayan Rahardjo, a relative of some of the dead immigrants, was picked up by the police and then escaped, he was found by Derrick, who forcibly removed him from the house where he had been staying, unaware Wayan’s son Bambang was hiding under the house.
Charlie and Angelo realised that the description Xavier(but not Hugo)had given matched the one given by Geoff and Nicole.With Bambang being looked after by Hugo and Martha, Derrick spoke with someone on the phone and agreed to snatch the boy.He followed the trio as they went fishing on the wharf and tried to grab Bambang when he wandered away from the others but was stopped by Charlie and Angelo, who had been anticipating someone trying something, and arrested.Although Nicole identified him, he claimed he was feverish and confused on the island.However, when Angelo revealed his fingerprints had been found on the log book and on a coded message found in one of Bambang’s toys, Derrick became nervous and asked for a lawyer, although he still refused to talk.
A few weeks later, Derrick was being transferred when the police van he was in was stopped and he was released by Marine Officer Bryant, Angelo’s partner, who had tied up his two guards.In fact, this was a set-up allowing Angelo to follow him.Derrick met his employer, Suzy Sudiro, at the pier and, although she was suspicious of his being released, she ordered him to take Martha, who she had kidnapped earlier, to Chinatown and ring Hugo, telling him she’d be killed if Hugo didn’t bring the money he owed Suzy.It was at that point that it was made clear that Derrick and Hugo had been working together on the people smuggling, with Derrick dropping them off on the island for Hugo to pick up.Derrick was the one who had killed Lou De Bono when he saw their boat and the fight at the boat shed had been prompted by Hugo trying to leave the operation.
Angelo had stowed away in the back of Derrick’s car and managed to knock him out and untie Martha. However, he recovered as they were loading him into the boot and retrieved his gun.He fired at Martha but Angelo leapt in the way, suffering a scalp wound.Derrick fled and took refuge in a multi storey car park.He engaged in a game of cat and mouse with Angelo, who managed to knock the gun out of his hand.When Angelo chased after Derrick again, he found him lying unconscious with Martha standing over him with a fire extinguisher and a cleaner standing nearby with a broom.Derrick was swiftly returned to custody where, with Suzy and Hugo arrested as well, he proved a lot more willing to talk.
