Bella proves to be a challenge for everyone. Have Leah and Justin ruined their friendship for good?

Extended Summary

Raffy takes a selfie of herself, Ryder and Bella in the school corridor. The bell goes and Bella suggests they skip school together but Raffy and Ryder are both keen to pass their HSC. Roo ushers everyone along, reminding Bella that she’s got Modern History downstairs. Bella arranges to meet the others at recess. Later, Roo addresses her class, including Bella, asking them what they thought of General Hamilton’s poetry about Gallipoli and getting silence in response. She tells Bella to put her phone away and asks her thoughts on Australia entering World War I. Bella asks who cares and Roo says she needs to care in order to pass. Bella says she doesn’t care about that either. Roo directs everyone to read the next chapter. Bella asks to go to the bathroom but Roo refuses. Bella says she’ll just stare at the wall. Roo says she can but either way she has to stay behind with her at recess.

Justin tells Leah that their casual arrangement has been great but the shine’s worn off for him. Leah admits that they seem to be spending all their time worrying about crossing the line. Justin says he misses talking and suggests they either go back to just being friends or take it further. Leah thinks them dating would be a terrible idea, since she started the arrangement because she didn’t want a relationship. Justin suggests just being friends and Leah then gets annoyed at him ending it. Justin asks what she wants. All Leah can say is that she needs to get to work. Meanwhile, the bell goes at school. Roo tells her departing class she wants a 300 word summary and them to read up on the Battle of Lone Pine…and only then realises Bella has left with the others.

Ryder and Raffy arrive at the surf club, discussing being friends with Bella. They get a phone call from Bella, still at school, and confirm they’ve already left. She says she’ll meet them there but is then stopped by Roo who reminds her of their meeting. Bella says she has to go to the bathroom so Roo says to grab some food and join her in the classroom. Instead, Bella walks out of school. Roo waits in the classroom and then runs into Maggie, explaining the situation. Maggie wonders what prompted it. Roo says Bella was out of her depth and disruptive in class but seemed to have written her off before that.

Colby is in his police car and sees Bella walking by the road, asking why she isn’t in school. Bella says it’s recess but Colby says it won’t be for much longer so he’ll drive her back. Bella initially refuses but Colby sounds the siren, saying he’ll follow her until she agrees. Bella gets into the car, still complaining. Back at school, Roo has spoken to Ryder on the phone and learned Bella didn’t turn up while Maggie has searched the grounds. Just as they’re considering phoning Colby, he turns up with Bella. Maggie, Roo and Colby talk in the office. No-one can really explain what’s triggered things but Colby thinks the new arrangement isn’t working. Maggie says Bella needs to get used to a classroom environment. However, she also decides to take Roo’s next class so Roo can spend the next period with Bella.

Colby finds Bella outside the office. Bella is unimpressed with Roo and wants Simone back. Colby says it’s Bella’s fault Simone isn’t there because of the graffiti. Roo comes out and says Bella’s spending the next period with her. Bella declines but Roo says it wasn’t a request. They go to a classroom where Roo asks Bella to tell her about herself. Bella says she’s already done that with Simone and she should have passed it on. Roo wants to do it herself and says they can talk about whatever Bella wants. Bella isn’t keen on Roo having to squeeze her in between classes and asks to go to her locker to get some food, saying Roo can come with her. Roo agrees, but is looking at her phone as Bella gets a bottle out. Bella sees a fire alarm nearby; Roo tells her not to but Bella smashes it and notes now they have to evacuate. Roo tells everyone to go outside.

At the Diner, Marilyn notices Leah lost in thought. Leah says she was thinking about her latest blog, on whether friends can ever become a couple. Marilyn says it worked for her and John. Leah asks how that went. Marilyn says she had to think about him grieving Gina and Jett’s feelings, before explaining that she’d given up on a relationship after a few disasters but had a chance of happiness. Leah goes round to Justin and apologises for being rude. She says her track record is awful. Justin understands, saying he’s been burned too. However, Leah has decided she wants to go for it. Justin is delighted, lifting her off her feet, but she stresses she wants to go slow. Justin suggests they start with coffee.

Colby is leaving the flat when he gets a call from Maggie, telling him about Bella. At the school, Maggie lets the firemen go with an apology. Roo tells Colby that Bella deliberately set the alarm off and Bella, unrepentant, confirms it. Colby asks why they evacuated everyone and called the fire brigade if they knew there was no fire. Maggie says they’re required by law to do so, which Bella says Colby should have known. Maggie adds that it’s a serious offence to set it off. She isn’t sure what to do with Bella but sends her home for the rest of the day.

Colby and Bella arrive back at the flat. Bella is unhappy with Roo, saying she keeps sticking her nose in and made her look stupid in class. She wants Simone back but Colby again says it’s her fault she’s gone. Bella decides to go out for lunch with her friends. Colby tries to order her to stay but Bella asks what he’s going to do if she doesn’t and leaves anyway. Downstairs in the Diner, Raffy and Ryder tell Marilyn and Ben about the false alarm. Ben decides to take Maggie some lunch although they assure him she handled it okay. Nearby, Justin comments to Leah on taking her to her workplace for a first date, before wondering if that’s what it is. Leah invites him to the movie premiere and he happily accepts but wonders if they should do something before then, like dinner tonight. He goes to take her hand, then pulls back, worried it’s going too fast. Leah instead grabs and kisses him. Marilyn, Ryder and the others react in shock.
