Raffy struggles lead her to a drastic decision. Willow and Ziggy worry about Dean’s mental state. Dean sleepwalking forces him to do something drastic.
Extended Summary
Ziggy finds Dean asleep on the beach and wakes him. Dean is somewhat confused and Ziggy offers to take him for breakfast. Near the Diner, Irene encounters John and Marilyn, who say they’ve just had a call from Jett and he’s settled in Afghanistan. They comment on at least being able to stay in touch with people a long way away now, with Irene noting she misses Olivia and Marilyn musing on not being able to hear from John if she’d known him when he was in the navy. Willow comes down from the Diner flat and tells Irene she’s heard nothing further from Colby and Bella, before asking if she’s seen Dean, whose phone she found in the flat. Irene suggests he’s gone for an early morning surf.
Inside, Ryder tries to get Raffy to approach Tori, who is sat at the counter, but Raffy is still annoyed about Tori stopping her going on the trial and not telling her she was pregnant and also worried about seizures. Tori comes over and tries to reassure Raffy but Raffy just makes a pointed remark about the trial. After the teens have gone, John and Marilyn enter. Tori tries to use them as a sympathetic ear but it’s clear they don’t agree with her about the trial, with Marilyn saying they’ve seen the stress Raffy’s under while John diplomatically says they respect her decision. Later, Raffy and Ryder meet up after class. Ryder is excited that they get to design a computer game for Design and Development. Raffy says for Biology they have to come up with and test a scientific hypothesis but she has no idea what to do and it’s 30% of the mark. She wishes Coco was there; Ryder offers to brainstorm with her.
Dean and Ziggy are eating outside the surf club and Dean fills Ziggy in on Colby and Bella being away. Willow arrives with Dean’s phone and chides him for disappearing. She tells him about her conversation with Ben the previous night and tries to get him to focus on work. Dean has flashes of being at the flat and posting the letter and dashes off, saying he has something to do before work. Ziggy and Willow head inside where Ziggy explains about finding Dean on the beach and Willow notes he’s had trouble sleeping. She asks Ziggy not to tell Ben: The board shop is shut with a sign saying “Gone surfing”. Dean runs to the post box but is unable to open it. He sees the next collection is at 1pm, with his phone giving the time as 11.45.
Leah and Tori walk along the beach, with Tori lamenting having to be bad cop with Raffy. She also comments on Jasmine agreeing to be civil but says she misses their friendship. Leah advises her to focus on the baby. Outside the surf club, Ziggy finds Dean trying to get into Ben’s tool box in the back of his ute. After trying to play innocent, he admits he needs to borrow the angle grinder and asks Ziggy to get the key for him. He looks at his phone: It is now 12.00. Ziggy goes inside and tries to get Ben to go for a coffee. They chat about how things seem to be improving between Ziggy and Brody. As they talk, Ziggy takes the key and kicks it towards the door where Dean retrieves it unnoticed.
At the Diner, Ryder suggests Raffy do something about cells splitting and Raffy says he’s getting mixed up with atoms. John and Marilyn also chime in with ideas, with John suggesting the life cycle of a seagull. Irene and Leah attempt to bring them some smoothies to cheer them up but Raffy spills hers. Leah suggests she ask Mason for advice. Raffy rushes to the surf club but finds Tori coming out; Mason isn’t there. Tori has realised Raffy isn’t coping with her epilepsy and explains she rejected the trial because of their family’s history with drugs. Raffy is annoyed, saying she can’t concentrate and is paranoid, and Tori’s stopping her getting what she needs because of what Brody did. Tori doesn’t help by saying she’ll understand when she’s older and Raffy walks away.
Dean uses the angle grinder to force open the post box. He finds the letter he wrote, replacing the others. Opening it, he finds that he wrote that he knows where Ross’ body is because he put it there (although he didn’t sign the letter). He tears it up and puts it in the bin. At the school, Raffy complains to Ryder that she needs a DNA test because she can’t be related to Tori. She says she couldn’t find Mason. Ryder suggests talking to Maggie or Simone but Raffy says Year 12 is twenty times harder than she thought it would be.
Dean meets Ziggy at Salt and assures her he put the tool and the key back. Ziggy asks what it was about. Dean doesn’t give details but says he does weird things in his sleep, gets vague memory flashes like they’re dreams, and has to spend the next day fixing things. He rejects her offer of seeing a doctor and gets a text from Colby saying he and Bella are going to be away another night. Dean goes downstairs and apologises to Ben again, saying he’ll be back on form now. Ben points out he’s heard that before but agrees to give him one more chance. Dean approaches Willow, who also got Colby’s text. She tells him to sort himself out because Colby’s going to need them when he gets back.
Ryder finds John, Marilyn and Leah at the Diner and tells them about Raffy stressing out and how he can’t help her. John is worried by the look on Marilyn’s face as she says they need to step in. At the Morgan house, Ziggy asks Tori about a friend sleepwalking (stressing the friend isn’t her). Tori can only suggest they see a doctor, noting it could be dangerous. Ziggy notices a baby book. Tori ponders when Brody and Ziggy will start a family. Ziggy says if they get a house this year it could be next year.
Raffy arrives home to find John, Marilyn and Ryder waiting around the table. Raffy asks if it’s an intervention; John and Marilyn try to deny it but Ryder says it kind of is. Marilyn suggests things will get better at school once she’s working with the support teacher but Raffy says she has another idea: She’s leaving school. John and Marilyn try to protest but Raffy challenges them to make her go.
