If they knew she'd only be around for another 2 years, I think they probably would have found a way around it (e.g. recast him or had him work abroad). Whereas Happy endings are often a but ho-hum To compare apples and apples - Ricky grieving Brax was better TV than Ricky and Brax driving off together.
