Ray Meagher Linked To Facebook Rape Row

There is more written about it

AN Australian Facebook page that advocates rape has prompted further calls for the social networking site to be more closely monitored.

The page, which has attracted almost 10,000 "fans" and has been active since May 6, is another public relations disaster for Facebook, which has recently been criticised for its failure to deal with the security concerns of its users.

The page, titled "Alf Stewart Rape Dungeon", refers to the character in the Seven Network's Home and Away played by Gold Logie winner Ray Meagher.

Seven said yesterday the page was not worthy of a response. "No one from Channel Seven will even be dignifying its presence," a spokeswoman said.

Facebook declined to comment specifically on the page, but did say it wanted the social networking site "to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views".

"When sharing an opinion turns into direct statements of hate or threats against an individual, for example, or when users upload nudity, pornography, or violent photos or videos, the professional reviewers on our team take quick action to respond to reports," Facebook said.

Executive director of the New South Wales Rape Crisis Centre, Karen Willis, said she feared if similar pages appeared on the internet the prevalence of sexual abuse would rise.

That man is sick. And there are people who became fans? I'm sorry but there is nothing funny about rapes or sexual assaults. There are some subjects you shouldn't joke about. <_<

And using Ray to promote that kind of stuff is disgusting. <_<

I disagree slightly. I believe there's a saying, something along the lines of "I don't agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it" or something along those lines. Of course, since he's using Facebook and Youtube as his mediums, he has to deal with their T&C's as opposed to airing his views through speech or for instance, so that slightly muddies the waters, but I don't think we should start censorship over what topics can and can't be joked about in general day-to-day life.

This article, written by a columnist for News Ltd, sheds light on why so many people joke about rape, and suggests it was not really a pro-rape group. It's just black comedy that seems to have gone way out of control. It looks like a case of differing points of view, one does not understand the other's point of view no matter how abhorrent it is.

By the way, the columnist (who I really doubt watches Home And Away) has no idea of the original script (and probably hasn't seen the original I uploaded) — he says "What might possibly have been happening in the original script is beyond me, and that was part of the joke. It was absurd, weird, distasteful, and, for me, funny despite and for all of it....."

Among all the news websites, I have only found published articles and stories about this matter on the News Ltd sites, it is a News Ltd. story. None of the others seem to be carrying it. There was nothing in the print edition of yesterday's Daily Telegraph about it.

It looks to me the scene of Alf exploding at "Duncan" was twisted into a rape scene because Alf was undoing his belt (they saw it as undoing his pants), unless I am mistaken here.....

I still dont agree and dont think anyone should make funny remarks, jokes or anything of the sort about rape, sexual abuse or any sort of abuse for that matter... its not something that should be joked about and if people start doing it, no wonder so many rape victims or sexual abuse victims feel they cant come forward and say anything... because apparently people think this kind of thing is 'funny'

I dont at all find it funny and those who think it is need some serious help in my opinion... rape is not something... not even the victims want to talk about let alone be taunted or laughed at...

I'm sorry... but thats not at all funny, not even a little <_<

I'm not saying that it is funny (indeed I can't work out why so many people think it is funny, it doesn't add up) but it's one of the downsides of everyone being "different". I'm not disagreeing with you here. I had no intention of the clip being turned into a full on and grotesque rape clip. It was just a scene of Alf putting on one of his classic performances of bad temper — and some weirdoes turned it into a rape scene to "laugh" at and it went viral.

Don't ask me why people find this funny (this is the best I can understand and explain it), and no, let me assure you I am not disagreeing with you here.

I myself am trying to figure out how people find this sort of thing even remotely funny... and no im not blaming you for anything... I dont even think you had any idea someone would turn around and turn it into something so disgusting and vile...

nothing here is your fault :)

But that's your opinion on what's acceptable (I'm not saying I don't find it unacceptable as well), but I could add, oh, 2006 US Open, as something I don't find particularly funny. Should I campaign Dan to blacklist all all jokes about that on this forum as well?

I don't find it funny myself, just my opinion but that's just wrong. And using an actor's name is just stupid (And what happens if some idiot actually believes the actual actor would do that or something, some people can't tell the difference between reality and fiction and the media loves making actors and other celebrities look bad)
