PART 17 “At first… I thought that he was nice. And sweet… and when he brought me home and kissed me… I thought why not? It’s not like I was ever going to be with Paul. So why not? One kiss couldn’t hurt…” She looks at him, tears flowing over her cheeks. “But he didn’t stop… and when I tried to stop him, he pushed me against the wall… I tried to stop him, but I couldn’t. He was just too strong. He kept going on… and I just stopped trying to fight. I had nothing left anymore. Nothing.” Bobby looks at her silently, tears forming in his eyes. “Kate… you can’t keep letting him do that to you… Please do something.” “I can’t, Bobby. He knows how I feel about Paul… he’ll kill him. He’s not bluffing, I know that.” “How does he know?” Kate sighs. “He saw us… kissing. This morning. And… then he called me. I can’t do that to Paul, Bobby. If being with Darin means that Paul is safe, I’m willing to do that. Even if that means being punched and kicked now and again.” Bobby frowns. “Kate… even if he just kicked and punched you, I would have thought you were crazy. But in a sense I would have understood. But this guy… he actually raped you, Kate. And by the sound of things, he’ll do it again. How can you allow that?” Kate bites her lip. “Bobby… if you had to endure that for the person you love more than anything’s safety… would you?” Paul looks at Jon and Jodi silently, his eyes cloudy. Kate… He loves her as much as she loves him, but Sharni needs him… and to break up with her now… It would be monstrous. He sighs deeply, attracting a worried look from Jodi. “Paul? Is everything all right?” Paul shakes his head, his shoulders hanging. “My girlfriend might be dying and the woman I love is being beaten up by her idiotic boyfriend, who has some sick hold over her. How was your weekend?” Jodi puts her hand on Paul’s arm, looking serious. “Paul… it’s going to turn out all right.” Paul shakes his head, his eyes filled with tears. “How can you say that? Everything is not going to be all right, Jodi! It’s terrible! Everything is a mess and guess what, when we wake up tomorrow, it’s still going to be a mess!” Jon puts his arms around Jodi, looking at his friend seriously. “All right, mate… I get that you’re upset and that things are hectic. But it will get better sooner or later. You just have to believe that.” Paul shakes his head. “I can’t.” He walks off angrily and Jon puts his arm around Jodi’s shoulders. “Don’t take it personally, Jodz.” She cuddles up against him and sighs. “He has a point. Everything is such a mess. It’s like we’re cursed.” “What?” Chris suddenly speaks behind them and Jodi turns her head. “Hey, Chris. Please tell me some good news.” Chris sighs and sits down. “That’s what I was going to ask you now. Because if my mood doesn’t improve drastically in the next few minutes I’m going to kill a teacher. But why do you say it’s like we’re cursed? What happened?” Jodi bites her lip. “You should sit down for this…” Chris shakes his head in disbelief after Jodi has spoken and sighs. “I see what you mean… we are cursed. Things just can’t go well, can they?” Jodi shakes her head, tears filling her eyes. “It’s so horrible. Like we can’t be happy… And I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s so hard…” She turns her head to look at Jon, smiling through her tears. “You’re the only good thing here…” Jon puts his arms around her, pulling her close. He closes his eyes for a second, wishing that there was something he could do to make things better. LIZZY BRESLIN: PART 18“Hey miss Lizzy!” Cassidy looks at Lizzy with a huge grin and Lizzy frowns concernedly. “Cass, what are you still doing here? Tennis practice finished over an hour ago.” Cassidy sighs. “My dad forgot to come and pick me up again.” “Have you tried calling him?” “Yeah, his phone is switched off.” Lizzy lifts her chin. “Well come on then. You’re coming with me. I’m not going to leave you here all alone. Get your stuff, we can do your homework at my place.” “Okay.” Cassidy grabs her bag before walking to Lizzy’s car happily. “Should I leave a message on my dad’s phone?” “Oh, don’t worry about it. I will.” “Cut! Kate, what’s going on? You’re not yourself today.” Kate looks down, tears forming in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Scott. Can we take five please? I need to rest for a while.” Scott sighs and shakes his head slightly. “Fine. Take five everyone. I’m going to my office.” He storms off and Chris puts his arms around Kate’s shoulders. “Will you tell me what’s going on now? You’re a mess, Kate. This isn’t how I know you.” Kate lifts his arm off her shoulders, avoiding his eyes. “Yeah, I’m just a little tired. Excuse me.” She walks off sadly and Chris sighs deeply. “Don’t…” Paul frowns when he feels a soft hand holding him back and looks at Jodi sadly. “I can’t not go after her, Jodi!” “You have to. Come on, sit with me.” “I want to see how Kate is…” “Paul, trust me… you’re just going to make things worse. Don’t go.” He nods slightly and sits down. “I wish there was something I could do…” “There isn’t. You need to stay away from her, Paul. Otherwise… you’re not the only one who will get hurt here. Sharni and Kate… they’re the ones who are going to get hurt if you don’t keep your head together.” “I kissed her.” “What?” Jodi looks at Paul with a frown and he shrugs, trying to smile. “Kate. We kissed. It was… Jodi, it was… amazing. I felt… like we were the only two people on earth and that nothing would ever get between us.” He sighs and shakes his head. “Then her phone started ringing and she went all weird, chasing me away. I just want to know what she’s thinking, Jodi! Is that too much to ask?” Jodi leans over, putting her hand on Paul’s shoulder comfortingly. “I wish I could say something to help you. But the truth is… I can’t. If you need to talk though…” “Talking. When did that ever solve anything?” He stands up and Jodi frowns. “Where are you going?” “I’m going after Darin. I’m going to teach him a lesson.” “Paul, don’t!” It is no use though, as he is long gone by the time she’d found words… “Chris, this is Lizzy Breslin. I’m just calling to tell you that Cassidy is with me. Since you forgot her at school. And if you’re planning to come pick her up today, don’t. The last thing she needs right now is to hear what I think of you, and trust me I will tell you loud and clear. Bye.” Chris chucks his phone to the side, his hands shaking. “Oh, you have gone too far this time, Missy.” He grabs his car keys and runs off, sure to tell her a thing or two… Sharni looks up when her phone starts ringing and sighs before answering it. “Sharni Vinson…” “Miss Vinson… It’s doctor James here.
