Losing Sally

When Kate Ritchie farewells the Bay, she'll leave behind some dear friends- who are dreading her departure.

If Sally dies when the soap returns next year, Summer Bay will be devastated, but it's Brad (Chris Sadrinna) and Cassie's (Sharni Vinson) lives that will be turned upside down.

"For Cassie, it would be like losing her mother," Sharni says. "If I lost my mum, I don't know what I'd do. If Sally dies, there will be a lot of tears."

And for Brad, who recently lost his wife to cancer, the loss of Sally might be too much for him to bear.

"He wouldn't know how to deal with it," Chris says. "It would almost be the end of Brad. He just found Sally and if he was to lose her, he'd lose a lot of faith in the world."

It's not just the characters who would be affected by the loss of Sally. Sharni and Chris would hate to see Kate leave the show.

"Since I started on the show, Kate has been my learning base," Sharni explains. "I look up to her completely; she's such a great actress. Losing her would be incredibly difficult.

"It's so easy to do scenes with her; you don't even have to think about it. You just react to what she's doing because she's so good."

Chris agrees. "It's a privilege to work with her; she's very professional," he says. "Home and Away would be a totally different show without her.

"If Kate left the show, it'd be very sad. I love working with her- not only as an actor. If you need advice, Kate's always there."

End of an Era

Kate talks about her life after Home and Away... and baby plans!

Are you scared about leaving Home and Away?

I don't really know what my life is without Home and Away. But I'd be excited to leave. I think it would involve a lot of selfdiscovery. Kate and Sally; Sally and Kate... it would be like losing a best friend, but leaving would be exciting and I do truly look forward to that one day.

What about starting a family? Has that crossed your mind?

Sure, I'd love to do all that sort of stuff. I'm not ready to do it now, but it is something that's high on my list of priorities.

Would you like to start a family in the next five years?

I guess so... maybe 10. I'm only 28 now, so there's no rush. I have a couple of friends who've had kids and, rather than make me go, "That's exactly what I want to do," it's made me think now is not the right time.

You've had an up-and-down 12 months in terms of your personal relationships. Have you turned over a new leaf with your new partner?

I don't have a new partner.

There have been reports in the papers that you're seeing a school principal from Sydney.

I don't know where that came from.

If you did fall in love, would that help you make a decision about leaving the show?

I don't think so. The only thing that will get me to leave is curiosity and a sense of freedom. I've been blessed with this job, but I look forward to the day when I'm not being confined to the character. When I was a teenager, she wasn't really that cool- it wasn't really that much fun to be her- but as I've got older, I've learnt to appreciate the viewers a lot more. Home and Away isn't just a big part of my life, it's a big part of other people's lives, and they've grown up with the show and I'm really proud of that. On the flip side, I need to learn about who I am without Home and Away. I don't know when that will be.

So you're single at the moment. Are you content to be on your own or are you looking for love?

This is all very new to me and there are parts of being in a relationship that I miss, and that's natural when you've been with someone for a long time. But I need to embrace the fact that it's just me and this is just a journey, and who knows what's going to happen in the future.

I cant believe how TV Week are getting away with printing such rubbish. On last week's front cover they had Kate Ritchie leaves H&A on it and in this interview it's quite obvious that Kate will be around for a while. We all think about leaving our jobs that doesnt mean we will!!

What about Ric? His life will be devastated too.

What about Alf as well? Sally is pretty much like a daughter to him. Im guessing they don't think about these things when writing articles. Though i did enjoy the interview with Kate.

That line was a segway into the Sharni and Chris interviews. They're not going to bother introducing people that they're not going to talk to.
