Mackenzie’s haunted by her past. Abigail returns, but for how long? Cash and Eden put John through his paces.
Extended Summary
Levi is chopping food for dinner when he notices his phone is low on battery. He takes it into the bedroom to plug it in and finds a folder under the bed, full of pamphlets about getting pregnancy with a heart condition. At Salt, Mackenzie serves Mali a burger with extra chips. Mali doesn’t react and wonders if Levi knows when Abigail’s coming back: He’s called and texted her but just got a shrug emoji as a reply. At that moment, Levi rings Mackenzie and, when asked, says he doesn’t know. He asks when Mackenzie’s coming home, saying he feels like they haven’t spent much time together lately, but doesn’t have anything fun planned, just a cuppa and a chat.
Cash assures Eden for the umpteenth time that he didn’t contact her dad, saying he hasn’t got his number. Eden thinks as a police officer he could find out. Cash promises her he hasn’t and Eden believes him. She notes it could have been the shortest engagement ever if he had and Cash says nothing could be shorter than their first engagement. Eden says she’s not going to let her dad worm his way back into her life.
Mackenzie arrives home, having got an early mark. She wonders what happened to dinner, the ingredients for which still lie scattered on the kitchen surface. Levi shows her the folder, explaining about finding it. Mackenzie says she was doing some research and didn’t want to worry him. Levi says he can go through the latest studies with her and she agrees.
Next morning, Eden and Cash walk near the surf club with Eden commenting that there aren’t many people who know about the engagement and also know her dad: They run through Levi, Abigail and Remi, none of whom Eden thinks did it. They run into John, who asks about the River Boys being locked up and then about their wedding. Eden says she has to work but Cash can talk to him. John offers Cash some free advice. Cash says he can’t make decisions without Eden but, seeing John look crestfallen, agrees to listen to him.
Abigail turns up at the farm house. Mali is pleased to see her and she says she got an early bus. He apologises for assuming that her mother knew, noting that he tells his mum and sisters everything and they snoop. Abigail says she doesn’t have that sort of relationship with her mum but doesn’t blame him and says it’s another example of her messing up. She breaks down in tears.
Levi is on the balcony at Salt when he gets a call from work, reminding them he’s not on call. When he hangs up, he asks Mackenzie why a cardiac specialist in the city has asked for her records. Mackenzie says she doesn’t want to talk about it at work so leads him into Salt, telling Eden they’re heading out and to only call if it’s an emergency. Eden asks Levi if he knows when Abigail’s coming home, since she’s beginning to suspect she did tell their dad about the engagement. Cash comes in and notes he has another appointment with John later. He says he and Eden haven’t made any decisions about the wedding but wonders if they could ask John to be celebrant. Eden agrees, as long as Cash makes him squirm first.
Abigail apologises for her meltdown and Mali wonders what it was about. Abigail says her mother’s been giving her tough love, dissecting every mistake she made, and she couldn’t argue because it was true. She says her mother wants to sort her out. Mali says the person her mother’s worried about isn’t who she is anymore and she’s home now.
Cash shows John into the house. He says he and Eden are going to be looking at other people. John says there’s a woman in Yabbie Creek but she does the same thing every time. He adds that he’s a friend and neighbour, flexible with locations and has a testimonial from Justin and Leah. Cash says he and Eden have made up their mind…and asks John, who is delighted.
Mackenzie and Levi walk through a park area. Mackenzie apologises that he felt ambushed but explains she heard women at the outpatient clinic talking about pregnancy and had already made the appointment before she spoke to him last night. Levi understands. Mackenzie admits she hasn’t told him everything about her medical history and might still have problems.
Mali and Abigail arrive at Salt. Mali offers to talk if she needs to. They approach Eden. Mali apologises for missing the proposal. Eden says someone’s messed up and Mali goes surfing. Eden asks Abigail if she told their dad about the engagement. Abigail says it was their mum and she was there: Debra invited Jimmy to a family crisis meeting about her and pointed out how much better Eden was doing. Eden is astonished they actually spoke and wonders if they were arguing all the time. Abigail says they were too busy ganging up on her. She says she needs time off and asks Eden to cover her shifts.
Mackenzie and Levi walk on the beach with Mackenzie continuing to apologise for not telling him. She eventually explains about having an unplanned pregnancy before, it turning out to be ectopic and having a fallopian tube removed. She adds that the father was Tane’s brother. Levi takes the news in his stride and Mackenzie says that’s why she was worried.
At the Parata house, Eden talks to Cash about how the mystery of who told her father has been solved. She is still bewildered at the idea of her parents being in the same room willingly without lawyers. Cash suggests they’ve turned a corner. He tells her about John, and Eden says she’s more pleased by his reaction than her dad’s text. He points out they have the rest of the day off together so they decide to go to the beach and have a long shower afterwards.
John meets with Mali near the surf club and makes jokes about him being dumped, then wonders if he actually has been. Mali says Abigail’s holding something back. Cash and Eden appear and John encourages them to set a wedding date, before being summoned to deal with a broken blender at the juice bar. Eden tells Mali about both her parents being at the crisis meeting and Abby taking time off work. Not too far away, Mackenzie apologises to Levi for panicking and feels all right now. Levi, however, thinks there’s a reason to think they might have trouble conceiving.
Abigail is on the phone to her mum at the farm house, saying she’ll be there tonight. She hears a car outside and hangs up, thinking it’s the taxi. Mali comes in, notices she has a bag packed, and asks if she was even going to say goodbye.
