Mali changes tack. Justin and Leah play the blame game. Cash feels the pressure.
Extended Summary
Mali finishes off a class on the beach and tells Abigail it was his second lesson for the day and he has three more to do. Abigail tells him that she has had customers on the phone asking about their boards. Mali says he’ll ring them back. John pulls up, noting he thought Mali was going to sort out his staff situation. He suggests he put an advert in the paper. Mali says he is running an ad but admits he’s had no response.
Outside the Lyrik house, Eden suggests to Kirby that Mali hasn’t seen the comments but she thinks he definitely has and she has to own her mistakes. Eden goes over to Cash, who has just finished a night shift but wants to go back in. Even with Lacey at the safe house and the River Boys gone, he is still worried and wants to check on Theo and Sonny. He isn’t impressed with Eden offering to be his deputy for the day.
Mali is on the phone to a customer at the surf club, saying he’s been too short staffed to get the board done but will do it soon. Kirby turns up and checks things are okay, apologising for the response to the article. Mali says it doesn’t bother him and claims he has interviews lined up that afternoon. Kirby tells John before going upstairs to work on lyrics. Abigail asks Mali why he said that. Mali says he wants Kirby to focus on her music.
At the Diner, Leah complains to Irene about Justin going to the police. Irene suggests he was just trying to help. Leah says he made her look like the bad guy. Irene points out Theo banned both her and Justin. Leah says Justin’s just doing what Theo wants. Irene gives up on trying to get a word in as Leah rants that it all started with the car Justin suggested buying.
Similarly, at Salt, Justin is telling John that Leah has got them both banned. John suggests Leah’s heart was in the right place. Justin says she thinks she has the right to interfere in Theo’s relationship. John suggests he needs to sort things out with Leah since Theo will need them both eventually. At the police station, Cash is making phone calls as Eden arrives. She says Remi has spoken to Sonny and he’s safe. Cash says Theo’s guard hasn’t reported anything. However, he’s still convinced the River Boys are up to something and determined to keep investigating.
Kirby comes back downstairs and tells Abigail she made good progress with the song. She asks about the applicants and Abigail admits there aren’t any. She points out anyone applying for a job would look up the business and the first thing they’d see was that Mali was a bad boss. Down on the beach, Mali is on the phone arranging a delivery. Nearby, Kirby starts grabbing people asking them to work at the board shop. She accosts a surfer, telling him, despite what he’s heard, Mali’s a great boss and he’ll be being paid to surf. Mali approaches and Kirby claims the surfer is a friend but needs telling that his name’s Toby. Mali lets Toby go.
Justin arrives at the Diner and Irene tells him he’s a brave man. Justin approaches Leah thinking she’s avoiding him. Alf comes in and assumes that them being there means Theo’s on the mend. Leah says she wouldn’t know and explains about them being banned from the hospital. Alf says he’s sorry he asked as Justin and Leah both accuse the other of going behind people’s backs.
Mali and Kirby arrive back at the surf club. Mali realises Abigail told Kirby about there being no applicants and tells them both to stay out of it. Abigail points out that arguing in public isn’t helping his reputation. Mali heads off to another lesson.
Eden is sitting opposite Cash as he looks over the database for any information, continuing to refer to herself as his deputy. Cash admits he’s not finding anything but refuses to give up. At the Diner, Leah complains that Theo isn’t answering her calls now. Justin says she shouldn’t have told Lacey to stay away or left Theo worrying. Irene and John watch from the counter and Irene tries to intervene as Leah says Justin helped Theo build the car and it nearly killed him.
Cash runs into John in the street. John asks about the River Boys and Cash says hopefully everything’s been sorted. Eden joins them and tells John that, unlike the police, Neighbourhood Watch never rests. She suggests John should leave if he doesn’t want to hear her and Cash’s plans for the night. John retreats. Eden admits the plans don’t go further than the two of them and bed. Cash offers to buy her a drink first.
Justin is following Leah through a park area. Leah is determined to go to the hospital to check on Theo but Justin says she’d get a call if anything happened. Leah says he’s in pain and alone and Justin says he’s recovering. He says Theo needs space from them and they can’t be at each other’s throats when he does need them. Leah accepts it and apologises for what she said. Justin says it’s already forgotten.
Kirby and Abigail have both been summoned to the board shop by Mali. He says he’s scaling back Manta Ray Boards to a one man operation again: He’ll focus on the creative side and run a few lessons for extra income. Kirby tries to argue that the lessons bring in the money and publicity. Abigail reminds her it’s Mali’s business. She and Mali walk off, leaving Kirby to call a belated “Bye” after them.
Up in Salt, Cash tells Eden it hasn’t been easy staying away from her. Eden says he needs to find a balance. Cash asks if she wants to spend the rest of her life navigating this. Eden says she knew what she was getting into and is all in.
Eden and Cash see Kirby looking pensive outside and Eden sends Cash on ahead while she goes to talk to her. Kirby feels it’s her fault that Mali can’t find anyone new and has had to scale back the business. She says Remi has put money into her career, Mali has sacrificed his business and Justin is managing her for free, and she’s worried it will all be for nothing. At the Parata house, Cash talks on the phone about pulling something off before retrieving the engagement ring.
Eden and Kirby arrive home. Eden points out that Kirby has written a lot of songs and sung a lot as lead or with Bob or Theo. She encourages her to trust herself. Eden goes outside where Cash joins her. He suggests they run away together and go away for a couple of nights.
