Extended Summary
Bree and Dana are checking in on Sonny with Bree noting the internal bleeding has resolved itself. She still wants to send him for a scan. Sonny wants to be discharged, saying Dana’s bedside manner is the only compensation, although he fails to get out of bed. Bree sends Dana off to organise the scan, before asking Sonny if they’re a thing. Sonny wonders if it was dumb to make a statement against the guy that beat him up. Bree suggests it was brave.
Levi is getting Theo to do breathing exercises, inflating his chest to touch his hand. He admits they’re not halfway through yet. Theo says he doesn’t care about the exercises but clams up when Levi asks what he does care about. Levi says that Theo’s lungs aren’t working at full capacity at the moment and without the exercises he’s at risk of respiratory illness: He could end up hooked up to a ventilator with pneumonia.
At the Diner, Alf and Marilyn debate the likelihood of Roo picking herself up again. Marilyn thinks Roo will want to try again, saying not every child in foster care is like Eliza. Alf acknowledges there are children in need of a loving home and Marilyn says that’s what Roo’s trying to provide. Alf thinks they need a time out.
Outside the Lyrik house, Bree tells Remi that Sonny will be out of hospital soon and is worried about payback, plus medically it’s not good for him to be on his own. Remi notes he can’t stay there with the River Boys camped outside. Bree says there’s room at hers, and stresses Sonny wouldn’t try and kiss her again, but Remi doesn’t want her getting involved, although he’s not sure what else there is.
Levi is finishing off the exercises with Theo before discussing his worry that Lacey is in danger. Theo confirms that Cash is handling it but he hasn’t heard anything in days. He admits that he and Lacey aren’t technically together but says they both want to be, so thinks she’d contact him if she was all right. Levi goes and joins Leah and Justin and says that Theo did the physio but his headspace isn’t good. After Levi has gone, Justin considers trying to contact Lacey. Leah admits to telling her not to contact Theo again.
Cash is driving in his squad car with the River Boys behind him. He pulls in near Remi and Bree, with the River Boys pulling in further back, and notes he barely notices his shadows now. Remi asks him about police protection for Sonny when he gets out of hospital. Cash points out that there’s been no threats and the River Boys haven’t gone to the hospital. He thinks Lacey is the River Boys’ priority, since she’s testifying against Gage and Sonny’s just testifying against a lower-ranking member. Remi isn’t reassured by the suggestion that he’ll just get “a little payback”. Cash apologises and leaves. Bree asks what happens now and Remi asks her to leave it to him.
Leah insists to Justin that she’s done nothing wrong. Justin asks why she hid it in that case. Leah says Theo doesn’t need to know but Justin thinks she needs to put Theo’s mind at rest. They find Theo leaving another worried voicemail for Lacey. Leah says he put them through hell and tells him about telling Lacey to stay away. Justin defends her but Theo is furious.
At the Diner, Dana is asking Marilyn for a special picnic hamper, saying it’s for a patient. Marilyn asks if she does this for all the patients and Dana tries to claim she does. Alf finishes a phone call with Roo and tells Marilyn that she and Harper have been stuck in meetings all morning and he doesn’t know where Eliza is. Marilyn agrees with him about Roo needing a break.
Theo says Leah has been lying to him for days despite knowing how stressed he was. Justin says they didn’t have any information. Leah says Lacey’s the reason he nearly died. Theo says his choices were his and he just wants to know she’s all right. Outside the surf club, Bree runs into Levi, who is taking food home since Tane and Archie are there. He invites her to join them but she’s heading for a surf. Dana approaches Bree asking about Sonny’s scans. Bree says they were clear and he’s probably being discharged. She notices Dana’s picnic hamper and bottle of wine, commenting on her and Sonny’s flirting. Dana confirms she was going to surprise Sonny and will now have to surprise him wherever he is. Bree doesn’t know where he’s gone but offers Dana his number.
Remi is checking Sonny out of the hospital but Sonny wants to see Theo first. Remi worries about Justin’s reaction. Sonny gestures to the two men following him, saying they’re there to protect him. Justin appears and says it’s not a good time to visit Theo but apologises for taking things out on Sonny, while Sonny apologises for getting Theo into this. Justin notices the two bodyguards. Remi says they’re worried about the River Boys coming after Sonny, and Cash is busy protecting Lacey so they hired private security. Justin picks up on the comment.
Later, Remi is getting Sonny settled at a motel, with the guards waiting outside the room, while calling Cash to update him. Sonny says he’ll be bored out of his mind within five minutes and isn’t reassured by Remi saying he could read a book. He also quips the guards might want to share his bed. One of the guards, Brad, says they’ll be right outside and won’t be sharing a bed. Sonny asks about room service and Remi says he’ll get some supplies and maybe a book. After he’s gone, Sonny gets a text saying “No bye for your favourite nurse? How will you make it up to me?”
Cash is on the phone at the police station, complaining that the delay has put a witness in danger. Justin comes in, mentioning Sonny’s private security and asking whether Theo’s in danger. Cash doesn’t think he is until he makes an official statement, at which point there’ll be two guards on the door. Justin asks about Lacey, and Cash says she’s safe. Justin says Theo’s in a bad way. Lacey appears from the back room and asks if Theo’s okay.
Sonny and Dana look on as Brad searches the hamper and examines the wine bottle. He gives it the all clear and says two of his men will be outside all night and he’ll see Sonny in the morning. After Brad’s gone, Sonny jokingly claims to be second in line to the throne of Denmark. Dana says him being beaten up and having bodyguards is a freaky situation and Sonny agrees to explain over a glass of wine.
Cash takes Justin and Lacey into the back room and stresses no-one can know Lacey is there. Lacey tells Justin about Leah telling her to stay away and Justin says Theo’s problem isn’t medical, he’s just worried about her. He says he’ll let Theo know she’s okay. Cash says he can’t tell anyone about her and the River Boys would firebomb the station if they knew she was there.
At the hospital, Leah and Theo are arguing about what she did; Theo says she can’t dictate who he sees and Leah insists she was protecting him. Justin arrives back and says he’s been to see Cash, and Lacey’s safe. When Theo presses for details, he says he’s seen her. Later, in the hospital waiting area, Leah chides Justin for looking for Lacey, thinking Theo would have got over her. Justin disagrees.
Sonny explains to Dana that he’s hiding from the guys who did this to him. Dana wonders if her being there is a good idea. Sonny compares the bodyguards to night club bouncers although Dana isn’t convinced by the comparison. Sonny says the hospital had one thing going for it, who’s turned up. Dana claims she came because she felt sorry for him and he assures her she’s safe.
Lacey searches through her bags and retrieves her phone. She turns it on and finds a number of voicemails, missed calls and texts: Some from Theo, some from unknown numbers. She opens a text thread which says “Where r u? Better watch your back. Shut ur mouth. Or else.” Cash comes in and says she was supposed to keep it switched off. Lacey wants to contact Theo. She plays a voicemail where a man says she’s a snitch who’s on a hit list and they’ll go to the hospital if Theo talks. She doesn’t know who it is, saying Gage has plenty of people waiting to step up. Cash promises he’ll keep Theo safe.
