Extended Summary
Eden is on the balcony at Salt and notices Cash down below, calling out to ask how his shift went. They agree to meet up after she’s finished work. At the garage, Lacey pleads Theo’s case to Gage, pointing out that if he crashes then he’ll wreck his car instead of Gage’s. Sonny doesn’t see that as a selling point. Gage eventually agrees to give it a go, just as Justin arrives. Gage says he wanted to book his car in for a service. Justin says they’re booked up so Gage and Lacey leave. Justin asks what that was about.
Gage and Lacey come across Cash outside the surf club and Gage quips that he didn’t recognise him out of uniform. Lacey wonders whether Eden prefers him in or out of uniform. Cash says Gage is banned from Salt. Gage says he’ll go for a surf and Cash warns that he can kick him off the beach as well if there’s any trouble. After Gage has gone, Cash asks Lacey why they’re hanging around. Lacey says it’s none of his business, but looks a bit unsure after he’s gone.
Theo is insisting to Justin that Gage was just asking for car help. Justin says Gage was there looking for them and knew them both by name. Theo dismisses it, saying everyone does and he just didn’t want to upset Gage. Justin looks to Sonny, who doesn’t add anything. After Justin’s gone, Sonny accuses Theo of flirting with Lacey in front of Gage. Theo dismisses it and also doesn’t want a lecture on racing.
Eden takes Cash back to his place and suggests he try on his suit. Cash tries to get intimate with her instead but they are interrupted by the arrival of John, who says he’s just back from the city. He asks if Tane is there and leaves the wedding service script. He asks how Cash is getting on with his best man’s speech and Eden says he hasn’t started. John tells him to get on with it.
At the Diner, Leah is trying to work on the wedding cake and tells Irene she’s distracted because of what Justin said about a River Boy looking for Theo. John turns up and asks Irene if she missed him. Irene asks what does he think and hugs him.
Cash is working on his best man’s speech, which involves a lot of screwed up pieces of paper with very little on them. He half-seriously asks Eden to write it for him. Justin turns up looking for Cash. On hearing it might be official business, Eden leaves them to it. Justin tells Cash he saw a River Boy with Theo and Sonny who’d been looking for him earlier and has a bad feeling about it.
Outside the surf club, Sonny approaches Gage and Lacey and tries to talk Gage out of letting Theo race, saying he just got lucky the first time and he’ll make Gage look bad. Gage doesn’t care, saying it’s Theo that will get hurt if anything goes wrong. Sonny tries telling Lacey to stay out of it and Gage tells him to treat her with respect.
Cash explains to Justin off the record that the River Boys are involved in illegal street racing and have been stripping parts from stolen cars. Justin doesn’t believe Theo would be involved in something like that and thinks it must be down to Sonny, who he wishes they’d never laid eyes on. Cash decides to talk to Theo.
Irene apologises to John for pushing him away. John understands. Irene says she got rid of the watch, which worries John because they’re expensive. Irene says he can come round and take it if he likes but that’s not the important thing. She notes she doesn’t know how the Bay ran itself without him and John says he has to check on the surf club. Irene notices an anchor tattoo on his hand which he explains some old navy mates got him to have for a dare. Leah tells Irene she said it would be all right. Justin comes in and just tells Leah that Theo said the River Boy wanted work done on his car.
Theo is on the phone to someone arranging the paint job on his car. Cash turns up and asks if Theo’s got a roadworthy certificate and Theo says he’ll get one before taking it out on the road. He wonders if Justin sent Cash. Cash asks how he knows Gage Reynolds. Theo insists he doesn’t even though Cash knows he was looking for him earlier.
At the Diner, Leah is fretting that she bigged up her wedding cakes to Harper and can’t measure up. Justin insists it’s fine and he’s just thinking about Theo and the car. Leah thinks it’s good he has something that makes him happy. John turns up and says Dana told him that Irene still isn’t coming to the wedding. Irene admits that it’s true.
Cash continues to quiz Theo, who just says it’s a business that people come in and out of. He denies knowing anything about the street racing and stolen car parts. Cash says there’ll be prison time for anyone involved. As he leaves, Sonny turns up and again tries to talk Theo out of getting involved. Theo says Sonny used to be fun. Sonny says he’s out and will pick up his stuff. Meanwhile, Eden has arrived back at the Newman house but gets a call from Cash saying he’s going down the station so arranges to meet him later. She notes his notepad and the screwed up pieces of paper and takes it.
Irene says John’s not the first person to try and talk her into going but insists she’s not there yet. She recalls how she went to Salt and stared at the grog and it took all her willpower to walk away: She doesn’t want to risk that again. Near the surf club, Cash looks around and then plants a device under Gage’s car. He runs into Justin and tells him what Theo said about Gage just looking for business. Neither of them are entirely reassured and Cash thinks Theo’s hiding something. He also says Sonny doesn’t have a record but he’ll be keeping his eye on both of them.
Cash turns up at the Lyrik house to find Eden writing. He says he’s got a surveillance warrant for a case he’s working on but can’t tell her any more. Eden says she’s written a draft of the best man speech which he can change or add to. Cash looks it over and says it’s beautiful but completely untrue. Meanwhile, John is at the Diner as it closes and asks Irene if she can not bite his head off. He says he admires his commitment to her sobriety but she’ll have all her friends at the wedding: Harper won’t be drinking and he won’t either. He says he’ll drive her home the moment she feels uncomfortable. Irene asks what if it happens during the vows and John says the wedding can wait until he gets back.
Eden tries to convince Cash to give the speech even if he doesn’t believe it. Cash says them belonging together and it being right is just a fiction. He notes he thought it would get better and so did Tane. Eden suggests it still might but Cash says Tane’s seconds away from getting married and not excited at all.
