John tells Dana their friendship is over. Harper is left confused. Tane decides what he wants.
Extended Summary
Dana follows John from the surf club, telling him she’s sorry and apologises. John, however, isn’t willing to let it go so easily, telling her that from now on, they’re not friends, just a volunteer and a manager. He walks away as Xander approaches, asking Dana if he heard that right. Later, Xander and Dana are walking by the beach. Xander thinks John will get over it but Dana isn’t so sure, recalling that she called him antiquated, sexist and disrespectful and used the word dinosaur. Xander still thinks she’s the coolest lifesaver and John will forgive her and convinces her to come into work with him.
Tane and Harper head into the bedroom, kissing. He lifts her onto the bed and starts undressing her, but after a few moment’s thought, she tells him to stop. She quickly gathers her things and leaves the house, saying she can’t. Across the road, Bree tells Remi that she had a good surf and that Alf apologised to her for Roo. They see Tane and Harper leave the house, with her refusing to talk to him and hurrying away. Bree goes after her while Remi asks Tane what’s going on.
Remi and Tane go into the Parata house. Tane says he thought he and Harper wanting the same thing. He mentions Perri going to New Zealand and wonders if Harper thinks he was using her to take his mind off it. Remi asks if he was and Tane looks uncertain. Remi says it’s no wonder Harper’s confused. Meanwhile, Bree accompanies Harper outside the surf club, trying to work out if she and Tane had an argument. Dana comes out of the club, having been summoned by Bree, and Bree leaves them to it.
John comes into the Diner in a somewhat muted mood and asks Marilyn for a coffee. Alf, at the next table, asks if there’s a problem at the surf club. John says he just needs to update the roster. Alf comments on Dana’s induction. John says he follows the rules to the letter and people should keep a professional distance.
Dana is astonished to hear that Harper was in “the demigod”’s bedroom and ran out, asking if her feelings have changed. Harper says they haven’t but Tane only cares for her as a friend and as the mother of his child and she thinks he was only after comfort again. She worries what would happen to the baby if things went wrong. Dana draws her attention to Tane approaching and makes herself scarce. Tane asks if they can talk.
Bree catches up with Remi outside the house. They compare notes on Tane and Harper, with Bree realising what happened between them. She also reveals that she’s booked herself in with a counsellor for real this time. At the surf club, Xander runs into Dana and they briefly chat about Harper. John appears and Dana tries to invite him for lunch or a coffee but he refuses. Dana goes upstairs and Xander goes over to John, asking him to get over it and forgive Dana. John asks how he’d feel if a friend thought of him like that and refuses to let it go, even if Xander considers him unreasonable.
Harper and Tane are walking on the beach. Harper apologises for running off, saying it felt like it came out of nowhere. Tane admits it took him by surprise too but says it’s not about Perri and he thinks they could work. Harper asks if he wants to be with her, saying if he’s not sure then the answer’s no. At the surf club, Dana meets John, who says he wanted to do this in person. As Alf watches from the office, Dana says Xander thought he’d made things worse. John gives her the new roster, which has them on different shifts, and says now she’s qualified to drive the buggy there’s no reason for them to work together anymore.
Tane arrives home, where he gets a phone call from Perri, learning he’s got his passport sorted and saying to call when he gets to New Zealand. He takes the basketball into the bedroom, where he looks at a photo of himself with Ari, Mikaere, Nikau and Gemma, the box of momentos of his wedding to Felicity and finally the baby scan photo. Meanwhile, Harper meets with Dana outside the surf club. She admits she wasn’t fully honest with Tane about how she feels but is convinced he doesn’t really want a relationship with her. Dana gets a text and has to go, as Tane arrives to talk to Harper.
At the Lyrik house, Bree is about to leave for her counselling session and she and Remi talk about having lunch afterwards. Remi gets a text from his parents summoning him, since they have something they need to tell him. He asks Bree to come along, saying they like her and like him more when he’s with her. Bree reminds him she’s going to the counsellor and convinces him to go on his own.
John comes downstairs and finds Dana waiting outside the office. She says Alf texted wanting to meet her and John says Alf wanted to meet him. Alf appears and says he’s meeting them both. Dana says it’s unnecessary and John says Alf’s overstepping. Alf says they’re both important members of the surf club and they need to sort this out.
Harper and Tane are walking on the beach again. Tane apologises for the way it happened but insists he wasn’t using her and he can’t imagine his life without her. He says he wants to be with her. Harper asks if he means as a couple. Tane says there’s no guarantees but yes. He helps her sit down on the sand. Harper is still uncertain, noting that as Tane said there’s no guarantees. Tane says he’d rather take the chance than spend the rest of his life wondering.
