Extended Summary

Mackenzie and Mali run into each other on the beach and discuss the surf. Mackenzie asks if Mali is going to be home for dinner tonight, since she’s planning to cook. Mali is most surprised at the idea of Mackenzie cooking. They both comment on how much better Abigail is doing. At the farm house, Levi tries to convince Abigail that Tim rejecting her is nothing personal but she’s having a hard time coping with it. Mackenzie comes home and announces that she’s cooking, which they both respond well to. Abigail decides to go in the shower, turning down Levi’s offer to talk. Levi tells Mackenzie that Tim dropped her as a counsellor because he’d rather sleep with Eden.

At the Lyrik house, Kirby wonders if Cash has a problem with Rose being his superior. Rose says he doesn’t and it’s her; Cash was her mentor and made her feel welcome and she had a crush on him, which Kirby is intrigued by but Rose says isn’t the point. Kirby suggests they meet up for breakfast tomorrow to talk it over. Rose wonders what to do if Cash asks her about it in the meantime. Kirby says either be honest or change the subject. At the police station, Cash is talking to Tane on the phone, trying to arrange to meet him and Perri at Salt, but gets turned down. He asks Rose out for a drink but she turns him down too. Cash jokes about her not wanting to fraternise with the junior officers.

At the Diner, Justin notes Marilyn stockpiling cakes for Alf and wonders when Roo will be back. Leah wonders what she knows. Marilyn says she didn’t mention Alf being in hospital, just that they’re worried about him. Cash turns up, asking for a burger to eat in. Justin chats about him having decided to stay. Leah gives Justin some vegetables, insisting they’re for both him and Theo. Cash goes to wait on the veranda.

Back at the farm house, Abigail and Levi thank Mackenzie for dinner. Mackenzie heads to bed and Levi follows after Abigail assures him she’s fine. Levi complains to Mackenzie about what Tim has done and calls Eden selfish. Mackenzie argues that she’s going through a tough time. Levi doesn’t think Abigail would be able to handle the real reason. Mali arrives home, apologising for missing dinner. He finds Abigail crying and comforts her.

Next morning, Marilyn greets Alf when he gets up and starts fussing over him, asking him a barrage of questions about what he wants for breakfast and how he slept which cause him to snap at her. Roo arrives in the middle of the tirade and awkwardly greets them. Alf wonders what she’s doing there. Later, Alf chats to Roo about her trip and the fact Ryder is managing the bar staff. He realises Marilyn called Roo and snaps at Maz that he didn’t want Roo there when he was in hospital (which is news to Roo) and doesn’t want her now, and doesn’t need a babysitter. Roo sends Marilyn to work before noting they have a lot to catch up on.

Mackenzie, Levi, Abigail and Mali are arriving outside the surf club. Abigail turns down an offer for breakfast and also to have lunch, saying she doesn’t need someone to hold her hand (as Levi and Mackenzie are doing). Mali follows Abigail, who says she doesn’t want to burden Levi. Mali says she can still have lunch with him and she agrees. Up in Salt, Levi leaves an irate message for Eden. Mackenzie says Eden’s not trying to be malicious. Levi starts ranting about what Eden and Tim did and Mackenzie alerts him to the fact Cash has just come in, causing him to clam up.

Leah serves Rose and Kirby at the Diner. From a nearby table, Justin comments that Cash was in there last night looking flat and hopes Rose hasn’t worked him hard. Rose tells Kirby about turning down drinks and blames it on Kirby’s advice to avoid him. Kirby says she said to avoid the conversation, not him, and they need a line of attack. Rose heads to the police station and apologises for being late. Cash says she doesn’t have to apologise since she’s in charge. Rose asks to talk, saying she’s not sure how the ranks are going to work.

Alf tells Roo that Marilyn’s dragged her back there for nothing and suggests she goes and rest. Roo says the fact she walked in on him tearing strips off Marilyn shows she was right to come back and asks him to fill her in. Back at the police station, Rose takes Cash into the interview room and says he hasn’t done anything wrong but it feels wrong that she’s his boss. Cash points out Rose was in all the cases with him and he was suspended; this is the next step of her career and she’s never had a problem yelling at him before. Rose accepts that and sends him to get her a coffee, calling him Constable.

Mali arrives at Salt where Levi and Abigail are eating. Kirby tells him she heard back from the agency and they’re sending them some proofs to choose from. Abigail tries to be light with Levi but then gets a text from Tim with suggestions for counsellor. She refuses to see one, saying another counsellor could abandon her like Tim has. Mackenzie goes over to Levi while Abigail heads to the bar. Mali gets her to sit with him, and Mackenzie convinces Levi it’s a good sign.

Later, Mali reminds Abigail she doesn’t want to burden Levi and says he’s just looking out for her. Abigail rejoins Levi and says she’ll see a counsellor but not one Tim suggested. Mackenzie sits with Mali and notes he always seems to know the right thing to say to Abigail. She concludes that Mali has a crush on Abby.

Roo is annoyed that she wasn’t filled in on Alf’s problems. Alf says she knew he had heart troubles. Roo reminds him he said there were complications and says she would have liked to have been able to say goodbye if something had happened. Later, Roo tries to cheer Alf up, saying the doctors gave him the all-clear. Alf says the experience has taught him that you could be in a car accident or fall off a ladder or eat a dodgy prawn and that could be it if a doctor’s having a bad day and makes a mistake. Roo picks up on the comment, asking what he means.
