Mackenzie struggles to forgive Mali. Irene and Leah clash.
Extended Summary
Mali is on the phone to his sister, saying he doesn’t know where Iluka is and to let him know if the Allens show up. Mackenzie continues to want nothing to do with him. Bree comes on shift and Mackenzie rapidly fills her in. Bree joins Dana looking after Levi who tries to give his own stats. Dana says he’s been stabbed and there’s been a hack job decompression which Levi says was Mackenzie. He tries to order a chest drain but Bree reminds him he’s the patient and orders it herself. Mali brings Mackenzie a water but she refuses it. She isn’t impressed when he reads a text from Kirby, saying he thought it was Iluka.
At the Diner, Leah serves Theo and comments on him taking over the garage. Marilyn comes in, saying she’s after a takeaway. Leah says soon they’ll be out of business and Marilyn will be out of a job. Irene insists she’s trying to help a sick girl and Leah says she’s sabotaging their business. She explains the insurance company rejected their claim. Irene insists they’re just dragging their feet while Bronte runs out of time. Marilyn agrees Bronte needs the money. Leah says it’s happened because Irene encouraged Bronte to sue them as well as Joseph. Irene sarcastically comments on Leah having her back and Leah reciprocates, also thinking Irene’s deluding herself that the insurance company will change their minds.
Levi is in a more stable condition and Dana quips about doctors making the worst patients. Bree says he’ll be taken up to a respiratory ward soon and agrees to tell Mackenzie. Dana says to remember this next time he asks her to empty a bedpan. Levi says he’s never done that and Dana tells him not to start. Bree orders half-hourly obs. She goes and tells Mackenzie and Mali. Mali tries to lay a comforting hand on Mackenzie’s shoulder but she tells him not to touch her. Rose turns up and is shocked to see Mackenzie and Mali are the witnesses she’s been sent to interview. Mackenzie goes with Bree. Rose asks Mali what happened and where Iluka is but he doesn’t answer.
Irene serves Marilyn her takeaway. Dana turns up and asks if she’s too late for dinner, telling them about Levi being stabbed and saying he’ll make a full recovery. Irene pointedly says that not everyone gets to leave hospital. Leah isn’t impressed and gives Dana an update. Dana cautiously suggests that Irene could ask Bronte to drop the case. Irene isn’t happy about the comment and says she’ll bring her a salad.
Rose tries to ask Mali if he recognised the attackers. Mali is busy bombarding Nat with texts asking about Iluka but eventually says he didn’t, then refuses to answer any more questions. Bree appears to say that Levi’s been taken to the ward but Rose should wait until tomorrow before taking his statement. Mali goes up to see him; Mackenzie is by his side. Mali admits he didn’t tell Rose anything and says he needs time to find Iluka. He adds that he’s glad Levi’s okay.
Next morning, Irene and Dana are walking through a park area. Dana suggests that if Bronte knew Irene could lose her business, she’d drop the lawsuit. Irene tells her to leave it. Dana checks Irene knows she’s not trying to hurt her and says she could lose her friendship with Leah over this and bankrupt her. Irene refuses to change her mind.
Mali is searching outside the surf club and runs into Theo and Bree, wondering if they’ve seen Iluka. Theo notes he was expecting Iluka to ask him for a ride in his car. He heads off to the garage. Bree tries to quiz Mali who refuses to talk to the police. He gets a call from Rose but turns his phone off. Meanwhile, Levi is surprised to find Mackenzie has slept in a chair next to his bed. Rose and Dana turn up. Dana starts taking Levi’s obs while Rose asks him what happened.
At the coffee cart, Leah isn’t impressed that Irene wants to spend more money to prove their claim. Marilyn and Theo look on as Irene explains she wants to hire an independent health and safety inspector to investigate the case. Leah realises it will cost more money they don’t have and says they could still lose the appeal. Irene says she’s trying to help Bronte and Leah replies that she’s thinking of Marilyn and the rest of their employees. Theo steps in, saying people are staring and asking they keep it down. Irene makes it clear that helping Bronte is all she cares about.
Back at the hospital, Levi tells Rose that they came home to find a woman and two men in the house. He says he’s hazy about what they wanted and who they were but Mali and Iluka seemed to know them. Mali calls Mackenzie into the corridor and asks her to downplay the connection between the Allens and Iluka, saying he’s kept secrets for her and Levi. He says he’s worried what the Allens would do to Iluka if the police were looking for him and asks what she’d do if it was Dean.
Rose thanks Levi for talking to her. Mackenzie comes back and puts off talking to Rose, saying she’s tired. She also says she doesn’t know where Mali went. Rose goes to see Bree and says people are hiding things from her and she doesn’t know why. Mackenzie tells Levi that Mali’s asked her not to say anything more. Levi’s monitors start bleeping but he ignores them as he says this is illegal and Mali shouldn’t have put her in this position. Mackenzie says Iluka doesn’t deserve to die. Levi tenses up in pain and Mackenzie calls for help. Bree and others rush in and start treating him.
