Extended Summary

Dana is with John on the beach, both of them in lifesavers uniform, and comments on having been busy at the hospital recently and secretly hoping for some action. John tells her that if they have to do a rescue they’ve already failed and Dana agrees it’s about prevention, although she also hopes for a bluebottle sting. John tells her to move the flags south (and won’t let her take the buggy on her first shift) while he answers a call from Justin. He admits he can’t do any work until he gets properly certified but assures Justin he’s on it.

Justin is taking his side of the phone call at the Diner, with Irene and Leah watching. Leah guesses it was to do with the wedding and tries to get details out of him. Justin says one of the doves is sick and wonders if they could use a seagull as a stand-in. Leah realises he’s joking. Justin leaves, saying he needs to check on “Daisy the dove”. Irene warns Leah that the more she pushes, the more Justin will try and wind her up.

Bree is walking with Xander near the beach. Xander says she can feel whatever she feels. Bree says she ended things so she doesn’t get to be angry about Remi moving on and insists she’s fine, before admitting she isn’t. She tells Xander she’s not sure what she would do if he wasn’t around. Not too far away, Valerie offers Theo one of the pills but he feels bad about lying to Justin. Valerie tries to argue that Justin would have paid the money anyway and says they have the whole afternoon to play. Theo wants to make sure the rest of the band don’t find out first. Valerie says she’ll start without him.

Theo turns up in Lyrik’s garden where Kirby is working on a song and says Remi’s out on his bike and Eden’s with Cash. Theo says Justin’s still working out the song he wants to sing but also says Justin can’t afford to pay them. Kirby says they weren’t going to ask him anyway. Later, Justin calls round to talk to Kirby about the wedding performance. She quickly realises that he thinks Theo has tried to talk them into accepting payment and is spending money on equipment but doesn’t contradict it.

At the surf club, Dana celebrates getting through her first shift and assures John she’s put the walkie-talkies on charge (but knows he’s going to check). Xander and Bree come in and John asks Xander and Dana for their driver’s license and medicare cards, saying he needs it for the wedding certificate. Bree says they can sort it tomorrow because she feels like drinking. She tells Dana that Remi’s already sleeping with someone else. Dana offers shots after she’s got changed.

Later, Bree and Dana are drinking on the balcony at Salt, with Dana saying finding out your ex is sleeping with a movie star is a unique experience. Xander brings them some shots and also some water. Bree says Stevie’s movies suck before she and Dana admit that they actually quite like Death Throes. They conclude that Stevie doesn’t know about Bree so it’s all Remi’s fault. Bree asks Xander to show Dana the photo and he finds it’s been deleted.

At the Diner, Theo gets a text from Kirby wanting to talk. Valerie approaches, swaying and obsessing over his shirt. Theo tells her to tone it down and worries Kirby’s onto them. Valerie thinks it’s probably band stuff and suggests he call her back. In the kitchen, Leah is on the phone to a bakery, asking if they have a cake order from Morgan and for details, only to find Justin’s told them not to tell her. Irene tries to get her to calm down. Marilyn listens in and suggests there is a way for Leah to find out what the future holds, producing her tarot cards. Leah agrees.

Theo goes round to see Kirby, asking what was so important they couldn’t talk on the phone. Kirby deduces he spent the money on drugs and tells him Justin asked to pay for the band. Theo says Valerie needed something to take the edge off. Kirby says he’s stealing from family and involving his band mates. Theo insists he’ll deal with Valerie and asks her not to tell Justin.

Marilyn lays out the first card, the empress, which represents someone loving and nurturing. Valerie thinks that’s Leah and comments on how she never saw tarot cards before she met Marilyn. The next card is the two of cups; Valerie thinks it’s because Leah works in the Diner and Marilyn explains it refers to a loving relationship. Irene says this is one of Marilyn’s more positive tarot readings. The last card is the seven of swords, which Marilyn admits means someone is keeping secrets and trying to deceive her. Leah assumes it refers to Justin keeping the wedding secret but Valerie looks awkward.

At the surf club, Justin approaches John to discuss the ceremony. John admits he has a couple more assignments to do before he’s accredited but assures him he’ll get it done on time. Xander helps Bree down the stairs, saying she’ll fall flat on her face if he lets go of her. Bree says he’s always there for her and kisses him. Unseen by either of them, Dana watches from the stairs. Xander pulls away and says he’ll get Bree home. Dana still doesn’t look happy.

Next morning, at the coffee cart, Leah is telling Justin about the tarot reading and saying that, despite the two of cups, the cards indicate he has to tell her everything and it would be bad otherwise. Justin insists she’s going to have to wait. At the Diner, John and Dana are sat at separate tables. Irene notes Dana isn’t her usual bubbly self. Dana asks if she’s seen Bree, Xander or both of them together, before babbling about seeing Bree kiss Xander and it was partly her fault since she got Bree drunk but it’s still not fair, telling John that this is his fault because she’d be over it if not for the mock wedding, and finally storming out. Irene tells John his course has caused more trouble than it’s worth.

Bree approaches Xander on the balcony at Salt and says she feels terrible about what she did and he’s been a good friend. Xander says he understands her acting out but she can’t use him. Back at the Diner, John complains to Irene about how he has to do eight scenarios, including one about getting married in prison, and will fail if he gets one wrong. Irene concludes that he’s doing the course because he’s still going to be Leah and Justin’s celebrant. John says it’s part of the big surprise for Leah and he can’t let Justin down.

Theo and Valerie are walking on the beach. Valerie wonders why Theo didn’t come back to the Diner. Theo admits that Kirby knows he lied and he’s not sure if she’ll say anything. Valerie storms round to the Lyrik house with Theo in tow and starts having a go at Kirby, saying they were going to pay the money back and it’s no big deal. Kirby asks Theo if this is what he means by dealing with it and says that stealing to buy drugs is a sign of addiction. Valerie insists she’s not an addict. Kirby snatches her bag and holds up the drugs, saying they can get rid of them in that case. Theo restrains Valerie until she calms down, at which point she takes the drugs back and tells Kirby not to tell her how to run her life.

Leah finishes a call with Tori and tells Justin she wouldn’t tell her anything, not even if she’s coming to the wedding. Kirby joins them and asks to talk to Justin, who notes that Leah will try and lip-read. Kirby asks to talk to him in private, saying it’s not about the wedding but about Theo.
