Roo can’t live up to John’s legacy. Leah turns on those closest to her. Justin’s desperation leads him to danger.

Extended Summary

Rose approaches Mali outside the surf club, still feeling hungover. Theo also appears and Rose notes he was actually the sensible one last night. Roo approaches in a harassed state, wondering where the list of lifesavers is, because someone has just called in with gastro and she needs to arrange cover. Mali can only suggest looking in the office. He checks with Rose that she doesn’t mind him staying to help out and Rose notes she’d be better off getting a nap before her shift anyway.

At the Diner, Alf is telling Irene and Marilyn that Roo’s got everything under control and he’d be quite happy if John never wanted the job back. Irene warns that he’d better be joking. Justin comes back in, having tried to call Leah. Irene says she hasn’t been gone long and might have gone to run some errands. Justin decides to go home and wait for her.

Justin arrives home and calls out for Leah, who hurriedly hides her bag under the bed. She first tries to deny going to the garage then, when he explains Irene and Marilyn told him she was, says that she spilt some coffee and had to come home to get cleaned up. She says she was there to apologise for cancelling the wedding, before hurriedly suggesting they have lunch.

Later, Justin is eating but Leah hasn’t touched her sandwich, which he comments on. He suggests that they go for a long drive somewhere. Theo comes home and mentions the surf. Leah quickly suggests Justin goes for a surf and they’ll go for the drive afterwards. After Justin has gone, Leah desperately tells Theo that they have to go: They’re in danger and Justin is working for Vita Nova.

Alf walks with Irene to the coffee cart. Irene says it’s pride that’s stopping John asking for his job back. Alf thinks John should know how much the club needs him. Irene wonders if Alf has ever told him that and notes John’s not taking losing the job well. Alf heads to the surf club and finds Mali searching the office. Roo reappears and Alf sends Mali along before giving Roo the file she was after. It shows that most of the lifesavers need to be retested before the end of the month to stay qualified and Alf notes John usually tests them, telling Roo she’ll have to arrange an instructor.

Mali turns up at the police station with an apology coffee and pastry for ditching Rose last night and today.Rose notes it’s been pretty quiet. Mali suggests that’s a good thing when you’re the police. Down on the beach, Roo is struggling to get the buggy started. Justin comes along and realises it’s just a flat battery. He says he can get it working again in ten minutes. They discuss Leah and Justin says they’re through the worst of it.

Theo tries to convince Leah this doesn’t make any sense but Leah is convinced the cult have got to Justin somehow. Theo tells her they don’t need to run away. Leah takes him to mean they should go to the police (forgetting Cash doesn’t work there at the moment) and tells him to take her. Once there, she tells Rose she needs to arrest Justin and he’s trying to take her to the cult. (Behind Leah’s back, Theo shakes his head at Rose.) Rose shows Leah into an interview room, saying she’ll take her statement in a minute. After Theo has confirmed he knows about Leah’s accident and sleep issues, Rose says they need to get her to a doctor and agrees to him calling Justin.

Marilyn is getting some food ready for Justin to take on the road trip. She and Irene discuss the lack of communication from John, and Leah’s recent behaviour. Marilyn gives the food to Justin and, as he’s leaving, he gets a call from Theo. He rushes to the police station, wondering what’s going on. Leah is telling Rose she heard Justin talking to the cult, then sees Justin is there. Rose goes to talk to him and explains. Watching them, Leah is convinced that Justin and Rose are both saying they need to get rid of her.

Alf runs into Mali outside the surf club and thanks him for trying to help Roo out. Mali notes that Roo is doing a good job but she isn’t John. Alf heads inside where Roo shows him the “surf club bible” seemingly put together by John, which contains contact details and any other information that’s needed to run the club, including an e-mail from 2012. She suggests showing this to him might remind him how much the club means to him.

Rose tells Justin and Theo that they need to try and convince Leah to go to a doctor, saying to follow her lead. They head into the interview room where Leah at first acts in a conciliatory manner, saying she knows she made a mistake and is going to go. However, when they start suggesting she needs to go to hospital, she first claims she’ll drive herself then accuses them of wanting to lock her up before rushing out. Rose convinces the others not to go after her, saying it’ll make her feel cornered.

At the Diner, Irene and Marilyn are closing up. Leah runs up outside, then slows down and tries to appear calm. She says she came in to do a stocktake and convinces them to go home and leave her the keys. After they’re gone, she locks and barricades the doors and turns the lights off.

Rose tells Justin and Theo that she could put in a request to get authorisation to take Leah to hospital, but it wouldn’t really work unless she’s a danger. Justin is convinced he can talk her down and he and Theo decide to split up and look for her. Justin goes to the Diner, where Leah tries to keep quiet. However, he hears her crying and sees the barricade, so tries to convince her that her mind’s playing tricks on her. Leah insists she’s not crazy and that their life was a lie. Justin grabs a metal bar and forces the door open. Leah grabs a knife from the kitchen and tells him to stay away.
