Extended Summary

Ziggy and Dean have just finished a surf, and banter about his progress. Dean considers putting off opening the board shop so they can make the most of having the house to themselves. Ziggy then gets a call from Justin, asking her to cover the garage after his night in hospital. Outside the surf club, Logan is chatting to Mackenzie about going away again. John appears and asks if Mackenzie got his message. Mackenzie sends Logan away and John asks her about being two months behind on rent. Mackenzie blames it on a new accounting system and says she’ll transfer the money soon. Ziggy and Dean come along but Mackenzie denies there being anything wrong.

Alf, Martha and Roo are at the hospital with Roo fretting somewhat. Logan appears and Martha explains about wanting to go ahead with the transplant now. The transplant co-ordinator, Jesse, appears and calls them through. Roo is frustrated to learn they have to do all the tests again to see if they’re fit enough for surgery. Jesse notices Martha’s cough, which she dismisses as a dry throat. She says she’s had it a few days and Alf notes it’s more like a week. Jesse says a doctor will need to take a look at her.

In Salt, Mackenzie looks through a long list of invoices. Ziggy appears and Mackenzie tries to say she’s just behind on rent. Ziggy suggests she ask Dean for the money back but Mackenzie doesn’t want him on her back and tells her to not tell Dean. Downstairs, John makes a comment to Dean about the trouble he’s having with Mackenzie. Ziggy intercepts Dean before he can question him about it, then heads off to the garage, telling Dean to talk to Mackenzie.

Mackenzie is on the phone in the store room, trying to extend her bank credit without success. She finds Nathan at the bar. He claims he wanted to see the place in the daylight before admitting he wanted to know when the next poker night is. He says he could find another big spender for her. Mackenzie asks to talk on the balcony, where he tells her anyone he’s spoken to will be discreet and hers are the best events. Mackenzie tells him she has no plans for another event at the moment but she’ll let him know if she changes her mind.

Jesse makes a phone call to arrange a pre-op review, saying there’s an opening that afternoon. Logan arrives and listens to Martha’s chest. He looks at her chart and orders an ECG and x-ray. Later, Jesse says the blood test results are fine but they still need to hear about the kidney function and x-ray. Logan turns up with the results and explains that the x-ray has shown Martha’s condition has worsened because of the hypertension causing high blood pressure and fluid on the lungs, meaning they need to increase the medication: She’s not up for the operation at the moment and might never be.

Nathan continues to put pressure on Mackenzie, telling her that he lost a lot of money at the last event and as a result owes people and needs another event so he can win it all back. Mackenzie still says no. Downstairs, Ziggy arrives to see Dean. Nathan recognises her as working at Salt and asks her to talk to Mackenzie about another poker night. Dean steps in, saying Ziggy doesn’t work there anymore, and shows Nathan the door.

Dean goes up to see Mackenzie, wondering about Nathan being there. John appears and asks Mackenzie about the rent again. He says they can work out a payment plan. Mackenzie says the surf club will have the money by the end of the week and offers him a free meal. Dean is unimpressed. Back at the hospital, Logan says they’ll keep Martha in overnight, adjust the medication and give her dialysis. After he’s gone, Martha apologises for causing this by delaying the operation. Alf and Roo do their best to reassure her.

Dean and Ziggy arrive home. Dean complains that this is just what he was worried about: Dodgy people hanging around Salt. Ziggy thinks Mackenzie can handle it but Dean thinks there’s more going on than they know about and she’s in over her head. At Salt, Mackenzie is on the phone to John, saying he’ll have the money tomorrow. She places the cash in an envelope. Nathan suddenly comes in, having been beaten up. He says it was the guys he talked about and refuses to let her take him to hospital. He says she’s his only way of paying them back. Mackenzie looks over at the envelope.

Next morning, Roo has filled Marilyn in on what happened at the hospital. Alf arrives and says Martha’s getting some rest. Roo decides to go and keep her company. Marilyn asks Alf how he’s holding up. Alf is worried about Martha and that he could lose her, especially if the stress makes her blood pressure worse. Meanwhile, John approaches Mackenzie outside the surf club, asking about the money. Mackenzie says she doesn’t have it and John says he’ll have to escalate it to the surf club president. Dean asks what’s going on and Mackenzie tells him to stay out of it.
