Extended Summary

Bella and Nikau are sat in Salt, discussing his plans to be a lifesaver. Bella repeats Mackenzie’s comment about her floating. Nearby, Mackenzie is on the phone to a worker, sarcastically noting their stomach bug must be down to the flu they had. John comes in and chats to Nikau about the hefty manual he’s been given before taking him downstairs. Bella tells Mackenzie she might be able to help her. Downstairs, John is giving an introductory speech when Nikau gets a text from Dean asking him to keep an eye on the board shop. John says he can keep an eye on it from there. He carries on giving his speech, mentioning they’ll also look at resuscitation and radio equipment.

Dean finds Logan making a sandwich and notes he thought he might have scared him off. Logan tells him the accidents weren’t his fault. Dean says that next time it could be Ziggy or Jai in the car and he’s not sure he can risk that. Outside the Diner, Justin shows Ziggy the video of Ryder and Theo’s challenge. Leah comes along and complains about people encouraging it. Justin reminds Ziggy they have a Commodore SSV coming in on Tuesday. Ziggy is looking forward to working on it but then remembers she’s taking Dean to his rehab then. Justin offers to put it back to Wednesday but Jai has a school thing then. Justin notes it looks like he’ll be doing it on his own.

Dean tells Logan he’d rather protect the people he cares about than drive. Logan points out he won’t have much independence, living out there without being able to drive. He suggests moving back in with Mackenzie but Dean prefers living with Ziggy. Logan also jokes about getting him a golf cart. Back at the surf club, John is talking about wind conditions and the effect they have on the sea. Nikau is looking very confused, asking Jake, the boy next to him, what page they’re on.

Mackenzie is uncertain about Bella’s offer to work at Salt, saying it’s not glamourous. Bella says she tried glamour and it sucked. She takes a meal from a server and delivers it to a table. Mackenzie agrees to give her a trial shift and sends her to clean tables. Later, Logan is there, talking to her about Dean’s problems. Bella attempts to deliver a meal but stumbles and drops the food off the plate. She offers them a new meal and free dessert. Ziggy arrives and Logan explains what happened with Dean, saying there’s too many bad memories associated with driving.

John is giving instructions on flag signals but Nikau is focused on exchanging texts with Bella. John asks him about the classes of hand signals. Nikau is clueless and Jake answers. Ziggy stops by and asks Nikau about the board shop. He claims he’s keeping an eye on it. Nikau suggests lunch and John reluctantly agrees. Upstairs, Bella is about to take an order, but when Nikau comes in, she leaves the table, saying she’ll give them more time. Mackenzie steps in to take the order. Nikau complains to Bella about the amount of theory and suspects the others have a head start on him from nippers. Bella considers working at Salt fun and thinks it’s going well. They sit down together. After a quip from Logan, Mackenzie comes over and tries to remind Bella she’s working. Bella just says she’s taking a break.

Justin meets up with Leah again outside the Diner. He says Theo’s channel got over 200 new subscribers in an hour. Leah is impressed but still doesn’t think they should be encouraging him, because the videos of his youthful stupidity could be on the internet forever and affect his future career. Meanwhile, Ziggy arrives home and chats to Dean about what happened with Logan. Dean repeats his worry about it happening again; Mia lost her baby, Nikau nearly died and while he carried on driving after his first accident, this time he has something to lose. Ziggy says she has an idea.

Bella brings Logan a salad but he insists he didn’t order it. Bella says she can get him something else if he wants but he’ll have to pay for that meal first. Logan tells Mackenzie that she needs to get rid of her. Mackenzie goes over to Bella but just suggests that she should finish for the day, saying that she’ll call her when she needs her again. Down in the surf club, John gets a phone call from Gerald and goes into the office to take it. Nikau puts John’s hat on a resus dummy and does an impression of him, with Jake joining him and taking a selfie. John returns and is unimpressed.

Ziggy has brought Dean outside the Diner and reminds him that they wouldn’t have got together without the car and the rally. She asks him about when he first got his license and how it meant independence. Dean gets in the car; Ziggy lays her hand over his on the gear stick and tells him he just needs to start the engine. Dean does so and asks about step two. Nearby, Justin and Leah chat about experiences with the internet. Bella turns up looking for Irene; she wants to tell her about her new job which she thinks went well.

Leah and Justin go for a walk on the beach. Justin thinks Theo needs to learn from his own mistakes. Leah is also worried about him spending time with Chloe; she thinks he’s getting serious about her when she isn’t interested and is setting himself up for a fall. Back at the surf club, John is demonstrating arm signals. Jake gives the correct answer but Nikau is at a loss. John says he’d know if he hadn’t been messing around. Nikau says he quits.
