Irene is named as a suspect. Mackenzie turns a corner. Justin’s apology attempts fall flat.
Extended Summary
Cash escorts Dean out of the surf club. Dean explains that Mackenzie is the sister he reported missing. Cash accepts the explanation but says Dean still has to go since Mackenzie’s asked the police for help. Ziggy comes along and asks what happened. Dean says Mac did: Mackenzie is watching from the balcony. Cash tells Dean that he needs to stay away from Mackenzie and he agrees. John watches the conversation from a distance, then approaches Dean and asks if it was about Susie. Dean says no and for John to mind his own business. At the police station, Murray is showing Stephen out. Stephen bumps into Marilyn, who has come to make her own statement. Murray hands Cash the forensic report. Cash shows Marilyn into the interview room and offers her a tea. She initially declines but he correctly guesses that she drinks peppermint.
Ziggy catches up with Dean near the Diner. Dean says he’s tried supporting Mackenzie but she doesn’t want anything to do with him. Ziggy suggests listening to her but Dean is worried that she’s got no-one. Later, Ziggy goes to see Mackenzie on the balcony at Salt. Mackenzie says it’s not Ziggy’s job to fight Dean’s battles anymore. Ziggy retorts that Mackenzie can treat Dean like dirt and he’ll still stand by her, telling her to either accept Dean’s help or leave.
Justin comes into the Diner and tries to talk to Leah. Stephen also appears and asks Irene for a coffee. Justin attempts to buy it, then says he understands Stephen got the wrong idea about Leah but there’s no hard feelings. Stephen walks out and Leah tries to take Justin to task but he thinks she should support him. Irene orders Justin out, then asks Leah what’s going on. Stephen heads to the surf club and meets up with John. Stephen comments on how the police have suddenly got interested, when they weren’t when they were robbed, but John snaps that someone dying is serious. He is also holding out hope that the body isn’t Susie.
Leah has filled Irene in on what’s been happening. Irene says she’d have come back if she’d known what was going on. Leah says Justin’s been like a different person and scares her sometimes. Irene says addiction can do that. Leah says she’s tried to support him but he’s being horrible. Irene asks what she’s going to do. Meanwhile, Mackenzie approaches Dean outside and says she didn’t mean what she said… before admitting that she did but she’s sorry. Dean accepts that he overreacted after thinking she was dead. Mackenzie jokes that he has a big bill at Salt after eating four breakfasts and suggests they’re making up for not having screaming matches when they were teenagers. She says she is going to stay at the hotel because she needs space and Dean reluctantly accepts it, saying she’s got a home with him whenever she wants it.
Leah comes home and Justin accuses her of being there to check up on him. Justin thinks Stephen should have accepted his apology. Leah says Stephen doesn’t know about his addiction. Justin turns round and Leah flinches away from him. Stunned, Justin asks for his medication and Leah gives him the pill. He heads to the bedroom to take it and sits, looking shattered. At the surf club, Stephen chats to John about what happened at the police station. Irene arrives and tries to apologise to Stephen on Leah’s behalf, asking him to smooth things over with Justin. Stephen says Justin seems unpredictable, although John says he’s normally a nice guy. Cash arrives and tells them the body is the woman they knew as Susie and cause of death was a blunt force trauma to the skull. John is devastated.
Irene is the next one to join Cash at the police station. Cash asks how long she’s known John, then shows a copy of her statement from when Susie attacked her. Irene says Susie rubbed her up the wrong way and is stunned when Cash writes it down. Cash asks her about Thomas O’Reilly. Irene says she was defending a girl in her care. Cash says she could have been defending her friends here. Irene protests that she’s the victim. As the interview progresses, Cash annoys Irene further by doubting that Susie spiked her drink. Cash says he’s gathering evidence for the homicide squad and it’s up to them if they proceed. Irene is stunned that he sees her as a suspect.
Justin emerges from the bedroom and Leah offers him a coffee. Ziggy turns up with some invoices for Justin to sign. Justin tries to smooth things over with her but Ziggy says they don’t have to be friends and Tane’s waiting in the car. She asks if he’ll be in the garage tomorrow, saying she’ll be at home sorting out invoices and stock orders. After she’s gone, Justin wonders why no-one will accept his apologies. Leah says people don’t know whether to believe him. At the Diner, John chats to Marilyn and Stephen, thinking he’s suspect number one. He leaves, with Stephen following after Leah chats to him about Justin. Irene arrives and tells Leah and Marilyn that Cash considers her a suspect and they’ve all got their skeletons.
Justin accosts Stephen as he leaves the Diner, making another forceful attempt to clear the air. Stephen aggressively tells him that he accepts his apology, so leave him alone. Ziggy hurries over and steps in as Stephen tells Justin to stay away from him, walking away. Inside, Irene and Leah discuss the murder investigation and Justin’s behaviour. Leah is hoping Justin will get better once he’s off the painkillers but Irene says there’s a problem if he won’t admit anything’s wrong. Stephen comes in and tells Leah about his run-in with Justin. He notes he won’t go to the police this time but will have to if Justin bothers him again. He asks how long Leah’s going to put up with it.
