Extended Summary

Dean follows Mackenzie towards the surf club, saying there’s no need for her to move out. Mackenzie argues that having Dean keeping an eye on her just makes her feel like she’s screwing up and she doesn’t want to be that person anymore. Dean says she’s pushing away the only person left and wonders where she’s even going to go. Mackenzie says she’s heading to work. Up in Salt, Bella is trying to tell a busy Ryder about her exhibition being back on. Mackenzie arrives with Dean and wonders why Ryder’s there. Although Dean says he asked him to help out, Mackenzie tells both Ryder and Bella to go. Dean refuses to leave however.

Roo, Leah and Justin are all seated at the Diner, while Marilyn frets about John. Justin complains about Susie still ruining lives and says that he doesn’t blame someone for killing her. At the police station, Cash asks John how long he and Susie lived together and brings up the fact they hadn’t known each other for long. John says it seemed natural but he was being played. He asks if they’re sure it’s Susie, since he texted her the other day. Cash didn’t know that since it isn’t in the file. John says he just wanted to talk to her. Cash says that, given how long the body’s been in the water, it wasn’t Susie he was texting.

Leah and Justin arrive home. Leah is unimpressed with Justin’s attitude but Justin refuses to feel sorry for Susie. Leah’s alarm goes off and she wonders if Justin’s going to ask her for his medication. Justin does so sarcastically, before wearily noting she had it in her bag and taking the dose. He accuses her of treating him like a child. They’re interrupted by Cash, who wants to talk about Susie at the station. Justin says he’ll see Leah later but Cash wants Leah to come as well. Later, Justin paces in reception as Cash talks to Leah. He first asks her about Justin and she admits he hasn’t been himself lately. She tells him about the research she’s been doing into Susie and how Justin wasn’t happy about it. Cash is surprised she didn’t leave it to the police. Leah says they lost their dream home because of Susie. Cash calls Justin in.

John has joined Roo, Marilyn and Ryder at the Stewart house. He warns Marilyn she might have to talk to the police too, since they were asking questions about her. He tells them about the texts not being from Susie and fears that he failed her. Ryder offers him some leftover tacos but John says he needs to go home. Back at the police station, Justin comments to Cash that the police seem more interested now than they were when Susie robbed them. Cash asks him about the fact that he didn’t want Leah to go after Susie. Justin says he thought it might be dangerous and says he’s glad Susie isn’t ripping anyone else off. Cash asks him about his painkillers, saying Leah said he was under pressure and asks if it’s given him a short fuse. He says he arrested Justin for assault and then the body of a woman he hated turned up. Justin refuses to answer any more questions without a lawyer present.

Next morning, Dean runs into Ryder near the surf club and apologises for him being caught in the crossfire. Ryder thinks things might have gone too far with Mackenzie but Dean asks him not to give up on her. Bella appears and tells Ryder she needs his help: Emmett wants to do a preview show in the Bay and she wants Ryder to help her find a venue. Meanwhile, Mackenzie turns up at Salt and is frustrated to find Dean there. He asks where she was last night. Mackenzie initially claims she went off with a random before saying she was in a room on her own. She says Dean can’t stay unless he’s a customer. Dean orders the big breakfast and says there’s no rush.

Leah comments on the fact that Justin hasn’t said anything since coming back from the police station. Justin accuses her of throwing him under the bus with Cash and is annoyed at the suggestion that he’d hurt her, despite Leah reminding him what happened with Stephen. Leah refuses to stay and look after him, saying she wants him to take responsibility. Later, at the Diner, Cash greets Leah and John and meets Irene, recalling the chloroform incident from the file. He says they haven’t confirmed foul play yet but asks Marilyn to come in to give a statement. She nervously agrees.

Dean is eating his meal slowly and queries Mackenzie about saying she wanted to change and then attacking Ryder. Ryder turns up with Bella, saying he’s just there for moral support. Bella says she wants to use Salt as the venue for the show, saying Mackenzie owes them and it’d be good for her business. To everyone’s shock, Mackenzie agrees. Later, Dean tells Mackenzie that he isn’t fooled by that show. Mackenzie insists she’s trying to get her life in order and needs Dean to give her space to make plans. Dean is reluctant to leave her, since she disappeared the last time he did that. Mackenzie tells him to go and Dean says she’ll have to make him.

At the Diner, Irene quizzes Cash about how long the body was in the water and if they’ll get the money back. Cash leaves when he gets a call in. Irene checks on John, who is wondering who the text messages were from and admits a part of him still hopes it isn’t her. Cash turns up at Salt, where Mackenzie directs him towards Dean, saying he’s refusing to leave. She adds that he’s got a criminal record. When Dean still refuses to go, Cash escorts him from the premises. Mackenzie looks as though she’s having mixed feelings.
