Has Christian finally freed his past? Dean gives Mackenzie a dose of hard love. Justin tries to be more supportive of Leah.
Extended Summary
Dean arrives back at the flat where Mackenzie is lying on the sofa, just about awake. Dean gives her an egg and bacon roll and tells her he wants her to go into work. Mackenzie tries to refuse but Dean says leaving her home alone isn’t working and he’ll dress and shower her himself if he has to. Soon after, the two of them are approaching the surf club. Mackenzie says she should be at home taking it easy but Dean retorts that she seems to think that means getting wasted and he doesn’t want to find her in the condition he did again. John appears and says he took Mackenzie’s deliveries but she has outstanding bills. This nearly has Mackenzie going home but Dean sends her towards the building. She takes a deep breath and goes inside.
Jasmine tells Tori that they have an incoming patient: A 40-year-old woman with severe headaches, nausea and vomiting. An ambulance officer brings in Shonda Evans. Tori gets Shonda to squeeze her hands and there is clear weakness on one side. Tori is worried it might be a stroke and says to call Christian, who is still lying in the abandoned room, his phone on silent. He seems to be either dreaming or having a panic attack, imagining being restrained and Lewis standing over him. He sits up sharply, breathing heavily.
Leah and Justin are walking on the beach towards the Diner. Leah says she’s glad Justin is doing this with her, with Justin giving rather wooden responses. Irene stops them and tries to have a go at Leah for ambushing John but Leah says she doesn’t have time because she’s meeting Stephen. Irene assumes Justin tried to stop the meeting and he admits he’s keeping quiet. At Salt, Mackenzie assures Dean she has staff to help her and has now sorted out their pay, meaning she has to do the drinks order next. Dean says he’s not opening the board shop so can hang around a bit longer. John appears and Mackenzie thanks him for his help but tells him to go if he’s not ordering anything. Dean and John are pleased she seems to have got her spirit back.
Shonda is brought back from her CT scan, which shows she has an aneurysm that needs immediate surgery. Jasmine says she has called Christian three times with no answer. Tori says to call the on-call neurosurgeon and prepare theatre. However, moments later, Christian arrives, brimming with confidence: He gives Shonda a brief run-through before taking her into theatre. Later, Tori makes a phone call to try and find out what’s going on in theatre. She tells Jasmine she’s worried about Christian not answering the calls. Jasmine suggests a number of innocent reasons.
Stephen questions Justin about him not wanting to find Susie. Justin says he does want to find her, he just wasn’t sure about their method. Irene brings an order over and Leah introduces her to Stephen as another of Susie’s victims. Irene awkwardly confirms Susie knocked her out and tried to poison her, before trying to make pointed remarks about John that fall on death ears. Justin explains he thought they should leave it to the police. Stephen says the police have found nothing and he and Leah are determined to stop Susie. Justin goes to the counter and tells Irene Leah and Stephen are as bad as each other. Later, Leah is telling Stephen a story about Susie approaching a woman whose mother was ill in hospital, thinking she was about to get an inheritance, and wants to head down there. Stephen has heard the story but doesn’t think it’s worth chasing it up, saying you learn to recognise the real leads. Justin encourages Leah to listen to him.
Christian returns from surgery and tells Tori and Jasmine that it went well. Tori is worried about how long it took Christian to answer his calls and Christian doesn’t give a full answer. Jasmine briefly chats to him about how he’s going. Meanwhile, Dean comes back up to Salt, dressed smartly. Mackenzie wonders if he has a date and he explains he’s seeing a solicitor about formalising access to Jai. He tells her John’s downstairs if she needs help. Jasmine arrives as Dean is leaving and Mackenzie uses her presence as an excuse to join her for a bottle of wine.
John runs into Justin outside the Diner. He thinks Justin is going to plead Leah’s case but Justin assures him he’s on his side. However, he also notes Stephen’s more level-headed than he thought and managed to get Leah to hold back. John asks if Stephen and Susie were an item. Justin doesn’t know. Later, Dean approaches John outside the surf club, explaining his plans and asking him to keep an eye on Mack. Stephen appears and smooths things over with John. John asks if he and Susie were close and Stephen assures him it was never romantic.
Jasmine sends a text to Christian checking if he’s okay. Mackenzie comes over and insists on topping up her glass despite Jasmine only wanting one. Jasmine asks what happened between her and Ziggy. Mackenzie says she took advantage of their friendship and Ziggy overreacted, before saying she’s concentrating on her real friends. Meanwhile, Christian is driving at speed along a country road. His phone displays Jasmine’s text message and several missed calls from Tori but he ignores it.
Justin is concerned to find Leah on the laptop but she’s not on a forum: She’s looking up cinema times for tonight. Justin happily agrees to go with her, even if it means watching a chick flick. They leave as Christian arrives. He tells Tori about going to the abandoned room but assures her he feels great. He makes a start on dinner. Meanwhile, Jasmine is preparing to go home. Mackenzie protests she’ll have no-one to keep her company but Jasmine thinks she’ll find someone. Mackenzie notices a male customer sitting alone on the balcony and looks like she’s planning something.
