Extended Summary

Exiting the Morgan house, Justin encourages Mason to check Pilbara is actually somewhere he wants to go to. Justin joins Leah and Ava. Ava asks to go to the beach, just the two of them, and Leah tells them to go ahead. Down the beach, Roo and Maggie discuss the assessments they have to do. Leah appears and tells them what Ava said. She’s worried that she pushed too hard to meet her.

John is barking out orders at the surf club. Alf and Ben comment on how efficient he’s been lately. John tells them he got used to running a tight ship while looking after Jett. Mason comes in and John chases him up about deliveries at the gym. Later, Mason tells Alf and Ben about the potential move to Pilbara, although neither of them have actually been there. They briefly fill in John before Mason goes back to work. John invites Alf and Ben for a beer with him but Ben says he has plans and Alf is looking forward to having the house to himself.

At the Diner, Leah admits to Marilyn, Maggie and Roo that she’s disappointed with how things have gone. Marilyn suggests taking Ava for a walk and talk, and Maggie suggests doing something fun. Leah is intrigued by the latter idea and Roo says she needs to reassure Ava she’ll stick around. Down on the beach, Justin and Ava play frisbee as she tells him about planning to run for the SRC. Leah appears and offers to join in but Justin says they were just going. He suggests Leah join them at home for a pizza but Ava reminds him that they were supposed to be having Chinese and watching a movie. Justin says Leah can join them with that but Leah sends them on, although she looks sad as she sees them walking away having fun.

Marilyn serves Roo and Maggie at the Diner. John comes in and asks if Marilyn’s good to go but someone’s called in sick. John decides he’ll stay and eat there. He tells Maggie and Roo about Alf and Ben turning down his offer of a beer, before sitting at a table with a paper. Later, Roo goes to the gym looking for Leah. Mason tells her about his internship offer, knowing she spent time in Western Australia. Without hesitation, Roo tells him to go for it: It was one of the best experiences of her life. Leah arrives and admits it was a disaster with Ava but says she’s not giving up: She and Roo are going to brainstorm ideas for a fun activity with Ava…although she doesn’t actually know what Ava likes.

Justin is putting food out at home and asks Ava what she thought of Leah. Ava just says she’s okay before changing the subject. Mason turns up, diving into the food, and Justin quietly tells him about having to turn Leah away. Mason thinks she was just giving them space. Justin goes over to join Ava. Meanwhile, Maggie arrives home to find Ben lying on the couch and is surprised that his “plans” were just pizza. She says John looked as though he needed company. Ben agrees to talk to him tomorrow.

Justin shows Ava to her room and tells her Buddy can’t spend the night in her room because he has his own stinky bed. Ava says she ate too much and tries to convince him that having Buddy in there would make her better. Next morning, at the Diner, Leah is setting off for the Morgans’ and thanks Roo for her help. Marilyn asks Alf to check in on John, saying he seemed lost last night.

Justin is playing croquet with Ava on the lawn. Mason comes out and notes he’s going to miss the place: He’s accepted the internship, which will mean working with the Flying Doctors, but will work in the gym into the new year. Leah turns up as Mason is leaving and suggests they learn to tie dye. Ava is intrigued and Leah explains you dye anything white into colourful patterns. Justin goes to get some buckets. Later, Justin jokes about turning the hose on the pair as he fills the buckets. Leah has brought some white t-shirts to dye and Justin tells Ava to go and get Tori’s pillow cases. He thanks Leah for organising this.

At the surf club, Alf and Ben wonder where John is and realise both of them have been advised to check in on him. They find John sat in the office, looking sad, and he admits he’s not all right. He tells them he’s grateful Jett is better but feels lost now all the running back and forth is done. Alf and Ben comment on how easy it is to get burnt out but John says he isn’t tired: He just didn’t know what to do once he’d run out of jobs. Alf announces he’s earned a breather.

Later, the three of them are relaxing with a drink in Salt. Alf and Ben tell John they’re glad he talked and will make it easier in future. Ben asks if anyone knows texas hold-‘em. John says he was considered a card shark in the navy and starts telling a rambling navy story that leaves Alf and Ben looking as though they now wish he’d stop talking.

Justin tells Leah he hopes she didn’t think he was giving her the brush-off before. They kiss, just as Ava comes back. Ava has now lost all her interest in the tie dye and says she doesn’t want to spend all day with Leah, storming off despite Justin shouting after her. Leah says Ava didn’t like seeing them kissing and decides to leave. She joins Roo, Marilyn and Maggie at the Diner and tells them what happened and that now Ava’s mad with her and Justin’s mad with Ava. She worries that, instead of bringing them all together, she’s driven a wedge between Justin and Ava.

Justin finds Ava sat in a secluded spot of the garden and apologises for yelling. Ava says she was looking forward to spending time with Justin but thinks he only asked her there because Leah wanted him to. Justin says he loves Ava. Ava says she doesn’t believe him and wants to go home.
