Extended Summary
As a group of runners are getting ready near the beach, a radio report notes that temperatures are soaring as Summer Bay prepares for the marathon. At the Diner, Justin and Mason chat to Marilyn about volunteering and about how many people are prepared to run 21K for fun or charity. Marilyn says she’ll be down later to cheer on Maggie and Leah. Justin and Mason leave, passing Alf and John. Alf has told John about Martha staying in a van but is starting to regret it as John and Marilyn question him. Marilyn points out to John that he was meant to be at the race start ten minutes ago.
Ben and Maggie arrive at the race. Maggie is nervous about letting everyone down. Mason gives her a pep-talk, saying he wouldn’t let her do it if he didn’t think she could, and reminds her to go easy on the first lap and hard on the second if she feels up to it, and to take it easy on slopes. Coco cheerily notes she feels like doing two laps now and Ben reminds her she’s unprepared. Leah also appears and chats to Justin about deciding to run to support Maggie. John calls everyone to the starting line. Ben talks to Ziggy, who says Brody’s at work all the time and thinking about it even when he’s not. At Salt, Brody is telling Simone he’s glad she stuck around. Ziggy arrives and is surprised to see Simone, who quickly leaves. Brody says her job in the city fell through so he’s suggested she work there again. Ziggy isn’t too happy but suggests it means Brody can spend the day supporting Maggie. Brody says Simone hasn’t started yet and he’s a kitchen hand down. Ziggy leaves, unhappy.
At the Diner, Alf is filling up an esky while Marilyn chats to him about how good it was to see Martha in town and to chat to her about the old days. Alf looks extremely sceptical and quickly shuts the conversation down. Later, Simone comes in and orders a latte. She gets a phone call from Brody, who tells her about telling Ziggy he’d offered her a job. He says Ziggy’s going to be at the race all day so suggests she come back there so they can talk. Simone cancels the coffee.
John is giving last instructions, including stressing the need to keep fluids up. Ziggy tells Ben that Brody isn’t coming and about Simone still being around, saying she wants to punch something. Ben suggests she run it off instead: If Coco’s doing the first lap, she can do the second. Coco jokes that Ziggy hasn’t run since the night Ben found out she’d lost her virginity, but Ziggy goes to sign up. Leah gives Ben her phone and asks him to be official photographer. John starts the race and Maggie, Leah and Coco head off with the others, with Justin cheering them on and Ben taking photographs. Later, Mason is seeing to a young woman that’s collapsed and asks Justin to get him some food since he’s stuck there. John sends Justin to make sure everyone has water, noting he told the organisers they should cancel. Ben cheers Leah and Maggie as they start the second lap, with Coco tagging in Ziggy.
Simone joins Brody at Salt. Brody gets a staffmember to take a meal back and tries to get Simone to take a job there. Simone isn’t happy about being in Ziggy’s face all the time though and wants to know where things are going, saying she doesn’t want to spend an hour or so with him and then have him go back to his wife. At the Diner, Alf takes a phone call about water supplies. Marilyn has been hovering by him and suggests the two of them, John and Martha go to Yabbie Creek races together. Alf sharply tells her that he’s fed up of her and John sticking their bibs in and wants them to butt out and let him get to know Martha again his own way.
Brody checks Simone wants to be with him before taking her into the store for a private chat. He says he thought Ziggy was the one until she came along. Simone isn’t willing to be his bit on the side and Brody asks for time. He shuts Simone in there when Justin comes in and has to stop him grabbing some food. Justin mentions Ziggy running the second lap, before being called away. Brody asks Simone what now. Soon after, they meet at the caravan park; Simone has hired a van. Brody follows her in but notes they’ll have to be careful. They sit on the bed and kiss. At the same time, the runners are coming through the caravan park. Justin gives some water to Maggie and also to Ziggy, who tells Maggie to go on ahead while pouring the water over herself.
Alf is handing out drinks on the last leg as Marilyn appears. Alf apologises for snapping earlier and admits he’s thinking about him and Martha getting back together. Marilyn agrees to give him some space and not put any pressure on. Ziggy comes past and Alf gives her two drinks which she pours all over herself: She is looking very disorientated, zigzagging back and forth. Meanwhile, Maggie hits the finishing line and is congratulated by Ben and Coco, while thanking Mason. Leah arrives and gives Justin a hug. John congratulates them. Ben is still taking photos until Leah takes the camera back. Ziggy crosses the finishing line but is very disorientated, thinking she needs to start the race. Maggie gives her a drink but she throws up before fainting in Mason’s arms.
Soon after, Ziggy is lying on the floor of the gym as Mason, Ben and Maggie struggle to get her temperature down. Mason says she has heat stroke and they need to get her to the emergency room. Leah and Coco come in and say they can’t find Brody: He isn’t in the surf club and the staff at Salt says he left a while ago. Maggie tries to call him. Brody’s phone lights up with the call but Brody, in bed with Simone, pays no attention.
