Extended Summary

At the Diner flat, Dean tells Colby he’s not looking forward to seeing Karen tomorrow. He also isn’t happy with Colby’s decision to leave Chelsea behind but Colby is determined to keep her out of it as much as possible and focussed on finding Bella and Michelle. At the gym, Robbo is surprised when Willow turns up for another shift. She tells him about taking a step back from her relationship with Justin. Maggie comes in and asks about booking another training session: Willow says she can see her tomorrow morning. Robbo wonders if Willow’s trying to distract herself from the break-up but Willow insists it’s about standing on her own two feet.

Ziggy is still propping up the bar in the closed Salt while Brody and Simone chat in the kitchen. They eventually emerge still chattering about food and Brody tells Simone she has talent before she says good night. Ziggy thinks Simone was sucking up; Brody calls it enthusiasm. He then asks her about her text and they kiss. Next morning, Willow runs into Dean on the beach and tells him about her break from Justin and how she can now hang with whoever she wants. She invites him for a coffee but he says he has to go somewhere, explaining he’s visiting Karen and Colby’s coming with him.

Colby and Chelsea are chatting near the Diner; Chelsea would like to go with him but Colby doesn’t want her involved. Dean pulls up in the car and Colby gets in. Chelsea says to call her if they need her but Colby says they won’t. At the gym, Robbo and Willow are working when Maggie arrives. Willow says she’s looked over Mason’s programme. Maggie admits the fundraiser has put her behind somewhat.

Brody and Ziggy are heading towards the surf club. Ziggy comments on the fact Justin didn’t say anything about Willow but Brody thinks he’s gutted. They run into Simone who says she wants to try the turmeric pancakes Brody mentioned yesterday. Ziggy declines to join them. Some time later, Simone is finishing off the meal and says she’s disappointed at how talented Brody is. She asks him for work experience. Brody is reluctant, saying it’s a professional environment. Simone asks for one hour to show him what she can do and if he’s impressed he can take her on for a month.

Dean and Colby are in the hospital car park. Colby checks Dean is okay. Dean hopes they’ve caught Karen on a good day. They go in and introduce themselves to a psych nurse, with Colby showing her his warrant card. The nurse says Karen has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, meaning she shows signs of bipolar and schizophrenia, and that someone will be present at all times. Dean asks to get on with it.

Willow directs Maggie doing bicycle kicks. Maggie declines to have a break. Willow suggests she does squats with kettle weights but Maggie recalls Mason deciding she shouldn’t do weights because the chemotherapy affected her bone mineral density. Somewhat thrown, Willow tells her to do the squats without them. Later, Ziggy turns up and Willow tells her Maggie’s in the shower. Ziggy admits Justin is hiding out at the garage. Maggie emerges and she and Ziggy decide to go down the beach and then have lunch. Willow admits to Robbo that she stuffed up: She isn’t qualified for the job but John never asked for documentation when he hired her. Robbo is annoyed and says she could have got him sued, telling her to leave.

The nurse leads Dean and Colby to Karen’s room. They hover in the doorway while the nurse tells Karen they’re there, then tells them to call if they need help. Dean awkwardly sits next to Karen on the bed, asking how she is and saying he tried calling. When she doesn’t answer, he says he’s sorry. Karen hugs him. Back at Salt, Brody finishes Simone’s offering and says it’s not perfect but it’s close. He agrees to give her the work experience. Simone hugs him and calls him boss, which is witnessed by Ziggy and Maggie, who they explain the arrangement to. Brody says he’ll text Simone with the start date and she gives him her number. After she’s gone, Ziggy protests that if she wants to be a chef she should go to TAFE but Maggie admires her.

Karen tells Dean that the drugs she’s on are heavy but it’s what she needed. She says she hates being in there but she hates what she said to him when they last spoke more. She doesn’t blame him or Colby. She suggests they go outside for some privacy. When they do, Karen makes a comment about Dean’s lack of visit and he says the doctors wouldn’t let him before. While she believes Dean wanted to see her, Karen knows there’s a reason Colby’s there.

Chelsea finds Willow outside the surf club and they briefly wonder about Dean and Colby. Robbo approaches and gives Willow some information he’s printed out on how to get her fitness certificate. Willow is pleased, but when she looks the information over she is shocked to discover it costs thousands of dollars. Willow goes back to the gym and tells Robbo it will take her time to save up so she understands if he wants to replace her. Robbo tells her he’ll pay for the course and she can pay him back out of her wages.

Willow finds Chelsea outside the Diner and tells her about the fees. Chelsea is worried that Dean and Colby aren’t back but Willow thinks they’ll look out for each other. At the hospital, the nurse says Karen needs to come in for group therapy but Colby convinces her to give them a bit longer. He asks Karen about Ross. Karen asks what he wants to know.
