Extended Summary

Alf and Robbo watch as several police cars pull up at the caravan park. Officers including Kat and Murray go to the van where Novak was staying. The door is forced but the van is empty. Kat says they’ll have to get forensics to take a look and the van will be taped off until first light. Kat chats to Alf about Novak. Meanwhile, Mick is looking at Luc’s photo in his motel room. He puts it away when Irene turns up with food and toiletries. He tells her he rented some movies from room service and tries to get her to watch one with him. Irene says his caseworker told her he’s been offered two different places in the city. Mick says he’s still choosing. He tries to get Irene to stay for dinner but she says she has to get back to Leah at the Diner and just wants him to call his caseworker. Mick picks up the phone but puts it down again when Irene has gone.

Kat and Robbo go back to her flat. Kat is still annoyed about catching Robbo using the computer. Robbo says he wanted to find out more about the case. Kat says she’s told him everything she can and doesn’t need protecting. Robbo leaves. Next morning, Ash and Tori are on the beach, acting rather coupley after a swim. Tori checks her phone and explains Justin is taking Mason to Yabbie Creek to get a suit for Beth’s funeral. Ash has to get back to Irene, since he told her he was only going for a twenty minute surf. He finds her with Luc on the headland. Irene knows he was with Tori and approves but has to get going.

Ziggy runs into Maggie at the Diner. Things are slightly strained; Ziggy invites Maggie to eat with her but Maggie says she’s a day behind on school stuff because of Ben’s behaviour. Ziggy thanks Olivia for coming after her and says she needs to explain what was going on. Olivia says she’ll find her on her break. At the caravan park, Murray tells Alf they should have finished with the van by the end of the day. Alf gives an update to Robbo, saying the police will find fingerprints since Novak left food behind, and confident they will catch him. Robbo goes back to his caravan and starts packing: He has flashbacks to Kat saying they need to find out what Novak knows, Novak telling him who he is and what Alf has just said.

Irene goes to Mick’s motel room, wanting to know how things went with his caseworker. She quickly realises he didn’t call. Mick says those places weren’t right for him, there’s no work and he’d have to share a room. He wants to stay where he is, get a job and get a place of his own. Irene says they made a deal and he’s not keeping to it, telling him to sort it today. Meanwhile, Ash and Tori are looking after Luc. Ash insists she was feeding herself earlier and tries to get her to take the spoon. Tori takes over and Luc calls her Mama. Tori, awkward, hands her back to Ash, dismissing it as a reflex action. With pushing from Ash, she admits that’s not what’s weirding her out: She’d like to be a mother sooner rather than later.

Kat arrives back at the station where Murray is checking the prints they got from the caravan on the computer. He gets a match to Novak, who has a lengthy rap sheet. Kat sees his photo and confirms he was the man who attacked her. She goes to the caravan park where she finds Robbo leaving with his bag packed; he says he wanted to give her a bit of space. Kat offers to let him in on the case and shows him Novak’s file: He’s a gun for hire and the theory is that he was hired after Dylan failed. She says he hasn’t been seen in years and they don’t know anything about associates. Robbo agrees to stay.

Ziggy has explained to Olivia about the break-in. She thinks that despite Maggie being polite she hasn’t forgiven her. Olivia does a poor impersonation of Irene, saying to give it time “darl”. They discuss what happened between Ben and Brody. Olivia notices Irene in pain. Irene says it’s just indigestion. Olivia thinks she’s been overdoing it and suggests she take the rest of the day off. Irene does agree to take a break. She goes to the motel but finds Mick’s room empty. Maggie has a flat tyre in her driveway. Mick comes along, saying he was out for a walk, and offers to help out.

Olivia and Ziggy discuss how the latter can make things up with Maggie. Olivia suggests a gift but Ziggy doesn’t have much money. Olivia throws various ideas out there: Make something, something that means a lot to Maggie and maybe Ziggy too… Ziggy is suddenly hit with inspiration and asks Olivia to help her out after work. Irene surreptitiously takes the phone and tries to ring Mick. Mick has nearly finished changing the tyre. Maggie explains she was fetching school supplies and they talk in general terms about how they both came to the Bay. Mick cuts his hand and Maggie invites him up to the house.

Tori is minding Luc. Ash says she’s a natural and will make a good mother. Tori isn’t comfortable discussing it so Ash instead reminds her of the time he caught her coming out of the shower and suggests they re-enact it. They race to the bathroom together. Meanwhile, Robbo runs into Kat near the surf club. Kat tells him the officers in custody aren’t saying anything but they know Novak has a partner who’s a bit of an underworld legend and far worse than him. He’s never been arrested and there’s no DNA, fingerprints or photographs but they know his name is Beckett Reid. Robbo goes back to his caravan, clearly shaken, and punches a mirror.

Olivia and Ziggy carry a potted tree into the farmhouse; Ziggy wants to wrap it. Mick comes into the room and Olivia lets the pot fall to the ground as they stare at each other in shocked recognition…
