Nate makes hasty plans to leave the bay after accepting his dream job. How will Tori take this news so soon after the breakup? Scarlett shares her suspicions with Justin and Tori that Brody is using again, leaving them with no choice but to intervene.
Extended Summary
Tori has shut herself away in the bedroom and Nate apologises through the door for the abrupt way he put it. Tori emerges and pretends that she was thinking the same thing herself and that, despite her comments about the future, it’s best to just let it go. Nate agrees, telling her it’s just not meant to be. Tori tells him to accept the Careflight job. After Nate has gone, she breaks down in tears. Meanwhile, Scarlett is sitting outside her house when Brody emerges, saying he’s on his way to work. Scarlett comments on how he seems upbeat, but seems suspicious of the fact.
Tori is sitting on the couch when Scarlett turns up. Tori says nothing’s wrong when Scarlett asks, but when Scarlett starts to say she needs advice on a medical matter, Tori bursts into tears and says Nate has dumped her. At the Diner, Nate is telling Leah that Tori was fine with the break-up and agreed things were over. He admits he still hasn’t phoned Careflight about the job. Alf comes in and is surprised to hear Nate might be leaving and has broken up with Tori, but also encourages him to go for the job.
At Salt, Mason feeds Brody’s latest dish to a blindfolded Raffy. Raffy thinks it’s disgusting but when Mason tries it he thinks it’s all right and that it’s a good thing Brody’s back in the kitchen. Brody points out that he’s just tending bar for now. Justin comes in and notes that Brody’s looking good. Back at the Diner, Leah tells Alf she wants to organise a farewell party for Nate the following week. Alf points out he hasn’t actually got the job yet. Nate comes back in from making his phone call and says he’s got the job… so is leaving Summer Bay the next day.
Tori asks Scarlett if this is what being dumped always feels like it, since it’s her first time. Scarlett says she’s only been in love once. Justin comes home and they fill him in. He is sympathetic and suggests Tori needs chocolate. She says there’s none in the fridge so he produces a hidden sweet jar from behind the bookcase. He suggests they join the others at Salt. Tori recalls Scarlett’s question and Scarlett says it’s about Brody. Justin thinks he’s fine but Scarlett thinks that might be because he’s using again. Justin insists he isn’t but Tori is more open to the idea.
Meanwhile, Alf, Leah and Nate walk towards the surf club. Leah says Nate not being a doctor never felt right. Alf says the same could be said about Leah not working in the Diner but Leah insists she’s still selling. Justin and Tori approach from the other direction. Tori quietly stresses how much she hates Nate but Justin insists on talking to them. On learning that they’re all going to Salt, and that it’s Nate’s farewell, Justin suggests they all eat together. Tori is less than enthusiastic but agrees.
Inside, Mason and Raffy whisper to each other about the odd set up. Leah notes Nate’s going to be a hero rescuing people in a helicopter. Tori, who seems more than a little drunk, says Mason wanted to do that when he was seven…or three. Mason, apparently missing the sarcasm, suggests Nate could put a word in for him with Careflight and gets a kick from Tori for his troubles. Justin attempts to make a toast wishing Nate luck but it provokes more sarcasm from Tori. Brody comes over and asks if they’re ready to order. They tell him they’re waiting for Scarlett. Alf wonders how they met her. There is an awkward silence before Justin says they met her through Brody. Justin follows Brody to the bar and asks if he’s okay. Brody says he’s going to head home and get some rest. He goes to the Salt van and tries to retrieve a packet of ice but puts it back when Scarlett calls out to him. He says he’s heading home and was just getting his bag. After he’s gone, Scarlett opens the van door.
Leah tells Nate that it’s clear that Tori, who has left the table and is standing apart from them, isn’t as fine with things as he thought and suggests he talk to her. Nate approaches Tori but she just mocks him again, saying he’s leaving her to play hero. Nate says he’d have broken up with her even without the job and Tori says he was never over Ricky. Nate retorts that he was her third choice. Justin and Mason quietly note that it’s a good thing Raffy bailed. (Meanwhile, Scarlett is searching the van.) The argument escalates and Tori throws her drink over Nate’s shirt and storms out. Justin goes to follow but is stopped by a newly arrived Scarlett, who says Brody lied to them.
Justin and Scarlett confront Brody about the drugs. He first claims it was an old stash, then that it was a one-off. Justin is annoyed, since now he has to go through detox all over again, and says he should have come to them instead of his dealer. He wants Brody to go into rehab. Brody insists he’s fine staying there but Scarlett indicates she’s no longer happy for him to do that. Brody gets aggressive, throwing a vase against a wall and smashing it, and Justin ends up having to restrain him and lock him in his room. Justin tells Scarlett he’ll stay the night. Next morning, Alf and Leah cook Nate breakfast at the beach house; he says he’ll drop in on Irene in the city to say goodbye. Alf comments on how he’s saved everyone’s life over the years, some of them more than once, but Nate says they’re in safe hands with Tori and the others. Leah asks if he’s going to say goodbye to her, pointing out that Zac regretted that he didn’t.
Mason and Raffy make sympathetic noises to a slightly dishevelled Tori and Raffy heads out to get her coffee, taking Buddy. Tori gets a text message from Nate. She finds him on his bike by the surf club. They exchange apologies: Tori is sorry for what she said at Salt and Nate is sorry for not realising she wasn’t as fine as she let on. They realise they both want each other to be happy and share a farewell hug. Tori repeats Leah’s comment about Nate going off to be a hero, without an edge this time. Nate rides off into the distance.
Scarlett brings Justin a coffee; he has spent the night awake on the sofa. Scarlett says it’s worse than the hallucinations and Justin says Brody didn’t even seem like himself. He decides that if Brody is asleep they’ll go and get Tori. He checks the bedroom and sees Brody lying motionless. Scarlett offers to stay but Justin isn’t happy leaving her alone. As soon as they have left the house, Brody opens his eyes. Meanwhile, Raffy and Mason comfort Tori. Raffy leaves to meet Jade from school, while Mason tries to convince Tori being single is okay. Justin and Scarlett turn up. Mason makes laddish noises about Justin spending the night at Scarlett’s but Justin cuts him short, saying it’s Brody.
Justin, Tori and Scarlett approach Scarlett’s house. Tori is on the phone and says there’s a bed free in a government rehab clinic but Brody will need to consent to it. She’s hoping they can persuade him. However, when they reach the house they find it ransacked. Scarlett runs to her room and finds the cash box empty.
