Nate is forced to choose between his dream job and Tori. Is she worth it? John reveals his suspicions about his father’s death… Could he really be responsible?

Extended Summary

Nate and Tori are cuddled up on the sofa at the Morgan house, watching what appears to be Pride and Prejudice, with Nate already wondering how much longer it lasts. Justin heads out with Buddy to get Raffy and Nate semi-seriously tries to go with him. He ignores a call from Careflight, explaining to Tori that they keep trying to get him to take the job, then heads out on the pretext of getting some burgers. At Salt, he finds a drunk and slightly bitter Leah. After she’s gone to the toilet, Nate assumes her behaviour is because of Zac leaving. Alf tells him it’s also because of VJ deciding not to fight for custody of Luc and muses that she might decide to leave town as well for a fresh start. Nate seems to share the sentiment.

John and Jett are back at the beach house. Jett is on the phone to Marilyn and tells John she’s inviting him over for dinner. John doesn’t feel like it, however. Jett is worried that John isn’t talking. John is snappy at his questioning and eventually says he’ll talk the next day. Back at the Palmer house, Jett shows Marilyn the article about George Palmer’s death on his phone. He explains John doesn’t remember the photo being taken. Marilyn suggests his father might have had a heart attack fighting the fire, which the article doesn’t make clear. Jett admits he remembers everything about the day his own mother died, despite not being much older than John was. He recalls the visit was supposed to trigger John’s memory and suspects he remembers more than he’s letting on. Back at the beach house, John seems to be turning in for the night. He goes to the bathroom and is startled to “see” his younger self’s reflection in the mirror.

Next morning, Justin has just finished a surf and finds Tori drying herself off on the beach. He asks her about the tension he sensed between her and Nate the previous night. Tori admits they nearly broke up the previous week, and only didn’t because she nearly died, but says they’re working at it. At the Diner, Nate looks at a video about Careflight on his phone, then gets a text from Tori asking if they’re still on for coffee. He gets distracted by Ash looking after a crying Luc nearby. Leah is ostensibly polite to Ash but doesn’t say anything about him and Luc, simply discussing his bill, while he tries to apologise for what he said the previous day. Nate suggests Ash take Luc to his GP if she keeps crying; Ash says he already has and adds that it’s what he signed up for. After he’s gone, Leah admits to Nate that she’s doing her best to take a step back and has a hangover. Nate offers her a cure.

John is asleep on the sofa and has a dream flashback to his younger self with the jerry can. Jett comes in and wakes him. John tries to go in the shower but Jett wants him to talk to him or failing that to Bailey. John tries to fob him off but when Jett asks how his mother could have lied to him, John snaps that she did it to protect him: He deliberately lit the fire that killed his father. Jett questions him, pointing out that he’s just guessing and doesn’t really remember the day. He asks John why he’d want to kill his father. John says that Marilyn was right and he was born with something dark inside him.

Nate is showing Leah his “cure”: He’s taking her kayaking. Near the Diner, Tori is leaving a phone message for Nate asking where he’s got to when she sees him with Leah. Her attention is drawn to Ash looking after a still restless Luc nearby. He asks her to have a look at the baby. Later, Nate is steering Leah around on the kayak. Marilyn applauds from the shore but Jett appears and tells her she needs to come because of John. Nate tells Leah he’s going to let go of the kayak and when he does she instantly overturns. They splash each other.

Tori looks Luc over in the Diner flat. She can find nothing really wrong and suggests it might be colic from overfeeding, which is basically what the GP said. Ash asks Tori about how things are going with Nate and they joke about her giving free consultations. Tori says she’s happy to babysit Luc. Meanwhile, Leah and Nate are laughing together at Salt. Nate asks her about VJ not going for custody and Leah notes it’s his decision. He asks about Zac and she says that she’s glad he’s gone because the ending was drawn out and painful. Nate seems to empathise.

Tori runs into Alf at the Diner. Justin has just filled him in on her hospital stay and he comments on Nate fussing over her, adding that it was nice of Nate to look after Leah that morning. Tori joins Justin and tells him she feels bad for moaning about Nate when he was just being a good friend. However, she also felt awkward that he was happy around Leah. She thinks the Careflight job is coming between them. Meanwhile, Nate has filled Leah in on the near break-up but thinks he has to try and make it work. He ignores another call from Careflight; Leah is concerned that he is turning down the job solely because of Tori.

Marilyn goes round to see John, who quickly realises she’s spoken to Jett. She refuses to believe that he’d kill his father. John reminds her she was the one who thought he had something dark inside him. Marilyn refuses to let him write himself off and tells him to go back to counselling and get it sorted. John admits that he’s scared of what he’ll remember but Marilyn tells him he needs answers. Later, John and Jett are waiting at the hospital. Jett suggests they could go if John’s not feeling up to it but John says if he does he’ll never come back. Bailey comes over and is introduced to Jett; Bailey and John go into the office.

Nate meets with Tori at the Diner and apologises for not cancelling their coffee, saying he was distracted by Leah. Tori admits that things aren’t great and wonders if they want different things. She tells him to take the job. They head back to the Morgan house where Tori is planning a long-distance relationship. Nate says they won’t see much of each other. Tori suggests she could move closer to him when her contract runs out. Nate is worried about her giving up her job and, as Tori tries to make plans for the future, tells her it’s over.
