Extended Summary
Justin and Brody are playing with Buddy in the garden. Tori comes home and reminds Justin he’s meant to be resting. Justin says he’s bored and can’t call Phoebe because of her request for space. Tori tells them she’s been reinstated as head of emergency and tells Justin he was right about her being confused about Riley and wanting to be with Nate. Brody is surprised. Tori notes the hardest thing is telling Nate. She returns to the hospital where Nate greets her as “boss” and agrees with the appointment. However, he shuts down her attempts to talk about them, asking her to look after a patient for him.
Kat is looking at Hunter’s file. McCarthy asks her for an update. She says she does have a potential suspect, showing him the file, but thinks they need to hold off since there’s other people to look at. McCarthy however tells her to bring him in. Outside the caravan park house, Alf sees Hunter in school uniform and notes it’s his first day back. Hunter says at least he won’t be the oldest student with VJ there as well. Evelyn comes running up and tells Hunter she may have messed up and Kat was asking questions. Kat pulls up in a police car and tells Hunter she needs to take him in for questioning.
Phoebe is in the store room at Salt, looking at Justin’s details on her phone. Brody comes in and wonders why she’s there; she claims she was getting wine for a customer and asks about Justin. Brody reminds her she asked him for space and suggests Phoebe call him, saying they’re in a Mexican stand-off. Phoebe refuses and Brody tells her to enjoy her space. Meanwhile, Justin comes back from walking Buddy and Raffy jokingly tells him off for not resting. Mason comes out and Raffy asks if he’s seeing his girlfriend, teasingly telling him to stay away from garages. Mason sends her off to school. Justin also asks if he’s seeing Olivia; he says he’s studying but is annoyed at Justin judging him. Justin says he’s just worried things are going too fast. Mason tells him to concentrate on his own life.
Hunter and Kat are joined in the interview room by McCarthy. Hunter says he only went 500 metres from the festival where he sat on a log looking at his phone. He mentions seeing Olivia with Mason and admits to being angry and upset. McCarthy shows him his file, bringing up him burning down Leah’s house and attacking Andy, and says when he gets upset he lashes out. He says Hunter’s a known arsonist who was AWOL at the time and no-one will believe he’s innocent. Hunter asks for a lawyer. Meanwhile, Nate is on a phone to a burns specialist at the hospital for Marilyn. Tori again accosts him and says she got his messages saying he wanted to talk. Nate says things have changed because of Riley. Tori insists it’s Nate she wants to be with but Nate says things are harder than they should be and, when he gets a text, has to go.
Olivia happily greets Mason at the Diner; he initially pulls back when she tries to kiss him but goes along with it when she promises Irene isn’t around. She tells him her shift finishes soon but he says he has to study. However, she continues to press and he eventually agrees to spend a couple of hours on the beach with her. Meanwhile, Kat shows Evelyn in to see Hunter at the police station. Kat tells them they’ve left a message with Morag but McCarthy is asking the DPP for permission to charge Hunter, since there’s time for him to have started the fire. Hunter asks her to check his phone records, since the GPS will show he was on the other side of the festival to where the first started. Kat agrees.
Phoebe is rather aggressively stamping on boxes that she’s putting in recycling. Brody comes along and suggests she’s channelling her anger. Phoebe complains about Justin taking her literally but continues to refuse to call him, saying he needs to learn there’s an in between stage between smothering and silence. Back at the house, Tori catches Justin wrestling with a lawn mower under Buddy’s disapproving gaze. She accuses him of trying to take his mind off Phoebe and worries that he looks pale and clammy. Justin asks her about Nate and she says he’s backed off and thinks she’s interested in Riley. Brody returns and tells Justin that Phoebe’s waiting for his call, advising him to fix it.
Kat and McCarthy rejoin Hunter and Evelyn. McCarthy says the DPP agree with Hunter being charged, even though Kat confirms the GPS backed up Hunter’s story. McCarthy is unconvinced since Hunter could have just left his phone there: He eventually tells him he’s free to go for now but still a suspect. Shortly after, Hunter and Evelyn are walking near the surf club; Hunter comments on how his first day at school went and says he didn’t call Zac because he’s caused him enough trouble. Evelyn congratulates him on how he handled himself. They see Olivia and Mason messing about nearby; Mason initially seems into it but, when he sees Justin and Brody watching, tells her he needs to get back to studying and will probably be busy all night. Justin sarcastically comments on him studying as he passes. Brody tells Justin to focus on his own relationship.
Justin and Brody enter Salt and see Phoebe with her back to them; Justin wants to bail but Brody gets him to stay. Justin approaches Phoebe, who is surprised he isn’t resting. Justin says he’s heard he’s been a bad boyfriend and adds that he’s been wanting to be with Phoebe for a long time and doesn’t want to mess it up. He asks for an opportunity to make it up to her, then heads home and sets up for a meal in the garden. Although he looks in a lot of discomfort, he sets up an outside table with flowers, candles, glasses, an ice bucket and a jewellery box before settling down to wait.
Tori accosts Nate, saying her shift’s over and he’s on a break so there’s no excuse. She takes him into an office and reminds him he said he wanted to be with her. Nate reiterates that things have changed and Riley’s been after her for years. Tori insists she isn’t interested in Riley but Nate thinks that will change. Tori protests that she’s not Ricky and he’s punishing her because she hesitated. Nate leaves. At the police station, Murray shows Kat a petrol can he found near the fire and she shows it to McCarthy in turn. They tell Murray to get it to forensics.
Tori and Raffy pull up outside the house. Raffy notes Tori looks smudgey and asks if it was Nate or Riley that upset her. Tori says she upset herself. They hear Buddy barking and Raffy thinks something’s wrong; Tori tells her to stay there but she refuses. They find Buddy standing over an unconscious Justin. Tori begins checking him over and tells Raffy to call an ambulance.
