Extended Summary

It’s the day of Kane’s court case and everyone’s nerves are on edge. For Kane – this is his day of judgement. The prosecutor does a good job of making him look like evil personified, but Morag more than holds her own. By the end of the day, Hayley’s testimony has left the case evenly balanced and Kane and Kirsty are even starting to think about their impending move. But Morag brings them back to earth. Their two biggest obstacles are coming tomorrow -Harper and Greg.

3903_1.jpgHarpers testimony isn’t good for Kane at all. Greg’s is quite damning, although Morag has a win on the question of his distance from the subject and his ability to ID Kane. After Scott Hunter and Irene give their character testimony, things actually start to look brighter. The judge and jury are being won over, and the prosecutor is doing little to dent Kane’s image. Then Kirsty takes the stand.

3903_2.jpgKirsty starts off fantastically until the prosecutor forces her to admit she took out an AVO against Kane, and that he robbed a farmhouse a couple of years back. Suddenly there are major question marks hanging over Kane. They’ve still got their big gun to come – Scott Phillips.

But Scott surprises everyone by claiming Kane asked him to lie under oath. There’s bedlam in the courtroom as Kane stands up and roars that it’s a lie! Morag knows this has thrown her case for a loop. She’ll have to rely on winning the closing arguments if she’s to save Kane.

3903_3.jpgKane and Kirsty retire to the Beach house to discuss their options. When Kane feels the kick of the baby’s feet against Kirsty’s stomach for the first time, he realises he can’t be taken away from them. He decides they’ll run away that very morning, before the verdict is reached.

When they find out the jury has come back early with a verdict, Kane and Kirsty are forced to make symbolic goodbyes as they promise to meet everyone at court. When they don’t turn up, the judge issues a warrant for Kane’s arrest and reads out the verdict: guilty. But Kane and Kirsty are out on the open road, heading to new beginnings. “You and me forever, babe,” Kane says to Kirsty, clasping her hand. These two are destined to be star-crossed lovers for all eternity.
