Extended Summary
Ryder, Raffy and Coco are studying Maths at the Diner with Marilyn looking on. Raffy has difficulty working out how to do a puzzle and they have to coach her. Justin turns up to collect Raffy, saying she can say good night to Tori if she’s quick. Raffy says she doesn’t know what to say and asks to go home with Marilyn instead. Marilyn is quick to say that would be fine. Justin doesn’t like the idea since it would be three nights on the trot. Raffy says her school books are there (despite Justin offering to pick them up) and a clean uniform. Justin gives in and agrees. Back at the house, Ziggy accosts Justin asking if he’s seen Brody, who isn’t answering either the restaurant phone or his mobile. Justin says Tori’s in bed but Raffy isn’t there again, wondering which place is her home.
Simone has calmed down in the store room with Brody getting her some water. Simone comments on losing her cool façade. Brody promises to rustle something up from the ingredients around them. A short time later, the pair are eating and Simone wonders if Ziggy likes food. Brody says she likes eating it but isn’t interested in how it’s made. Simone says she became a teacher to start with but used to make pastries with her mother, which none of her siblings were interested in.
Raffy, Ryder and Coco chat outside the Diner, with the others reassuring Raffy she’ll get on top of things. Maggie arrives to pick Coco up. Marilyn chats to her about how Raffy’s still having difficulties before telling Raffy they’ll have ice cream and a movie after she’s closed up. Left alone, Ryder tries to joke with Raffy about watching romcoms before adding he’s not saying she’s into romance and quickly deciding to walk when Marilyn returns. In the store room, Brody and Simone are passing time by having Simone attempt to come up with a new combinations of ingredients. She eventually offers to make something out of two ingredients and he has to guess which.
In the surf club, Alf and Roo are met by Ryder, who says he went for a walk to clear his mind about Raffy, although he doesn’t give details. Alf enlists his help measuring up for Ben’s counter. Ziggy and Justin arrive and ask if Brody’s still in Salt; Alf notes the sign isn’t out and he hasn’t seen him come down. The pair find Salt empty while Simone is feeding Brody. After finding the phone and keys, Ziggy and Justin open the cupboard and find them. Ziggy is furious, saying she’s spent all night worrying about Brody; he retorts he spent it waiting for her to rescue him. He infuriates her further by offering to take Simone home; Justin says he will. Ziggy says if Brody doesn’t know what her problem is then she’s not going to spell it out.
Next morning, Brody asks Justin if he’s seen Ziggy. Justin says she left early for the beach but doesn’t want to get involved. Marilyn and Raffy turn up; Raffy needs to pick up her book, despite claiming it was at John and Marilyn’s, but isn’t keen to stay long or to see Tori. Meanwhile, Brody finds Ziggy waxing her board near the surf club and insists nothing happened with Simone. Ziggy knows that but thinks Simone likes him and wants him to make it clear he’s taken. Brody protests that he can’t do that without looking arrogant.
Raffy tells Coco she had a good time with Marilyn and, when John came home, they made fun of him for complaining about Ben. Raffy realises she hasn’t brought her English notes, since she keeps forgetting what’s where. Coco gives her hers and suggests she needs to go home. Raffy says she’s more relaxed at John and Marilyn’s. Coco suggests she moves back there but Raffy says Justin wants her at home. They and Ryder head to class as Maggie approaches Roo asking about a rotary scholarship: It was arranged while Maggie was away, two weeks at an environmental centre, and they agreed to give it to the two students who did best at exams. Maggie says they leave in two days so they need to select the students.
At the surf club, Brody tells Justin about Ziggy’s demand. Brody thinks it’s ridiculous but Justin says sometimes women sense things and suggests he do it. Simone turns up and Brody takes her outside for a chat. He says Ziggy wanted him to ask her something, wondering if she’s into him. She looks embarrassed and he says he knows she isn’t and shouldn’t have said anything. Simone says she understands why Ziggy would want to hang onto him and suggests they forget it.
At the Diner, Marilyn comments to Irene that it’s not ideal Raffy going back and forth but she’s happier with them but Justin just wants her settled but home is where the heart is. She asks if she’s being selfish. Irene says she isn’t and thinks things will be sorted if the two families talk. Ziggy comes in and sits down with Maggie; Marilyn moves towards their table but quickly turns back when Ziggy launches into a rant about Brody and Simone. Maggie suggests Simone is simply Brody’s “work wife” in the sense that Dean was Ziggy’s “work husband” and it shouldn’t matter if she trusts Brody.
Ziggy goes to Salt and exchanges a few slightly frosty words with Simone. Brody comes over and tells her he spoke to Simone. Ziggy says he shouldn’t have done. They go for a walk outside where Ziggy acknowledges how Simone feels shouldn’t be a problem since she knows Brody will stay loyal. Brody points out he said that this morning. They have a kiss of reconciliation.
Roo quizzes her class about the book they’re doing, asking Ryder why the characters moved to the country. Reading the blurb, Ryder says it’s for a slower pace, which he defines as less traffic. Roo asks Raffy if they got what they wanted. Raffy flounders and Coco writes a response for her: They did but not in the way expected. Coco tells her she can say if she doesn’t know but Raffy says she’s got Coco. Maggie comes in and announces the two scholarship students: James and Coco. Later, Irene serves the three teens at the Diner. Raffy wonders if Coco has time to pack and suggests it looks like favouritism. Ryder tries to get her to be happy for her. Justin comes in and makes a quip about what Raffy’s eating and she accuses him of tracking her down to criticise her. Justin asks to go for a walk. Marilyn looks after them worriedly.
Walking on the beach, Justin asks Raffy what’s going on: She seems to be avoiding him, Tori and the house and now she’s ignoring him. Raffy angrily says he doesn’t have a clue what she needs before storming off. Justin looks stricken.
