Extended Summary

Ryder is looking at his laptop in the Diner. Ben and Maggie come in and he asks them where Coco is. They tell him she’s at home doing her homework and Maggie suggests he could text her or even ring her up and actually talk to her. Slightly confused, Ryder goes back to his laptop: He has found a photo of Coco and Jeremy on social media, which the two of them are having a conversation on. In the flat upstairs, Colby is embarrassed by his outburst. Jasmine tells him it’s not good to keep things bottled up. Colby wants to call it a night, but when Jasmine starts to leave he changes his mind and kisses her.

Ben and Maggie return home and tell Coco that Ziggy’s bailed on them. Maggie notes she has to wait a bit for her test results and suggests it’s karma for making students wait for the results of tests. There’s a slightly awkward silence and Maggie says she’s allowed to joke. Coco asks if they’re expected to pretend it’s funny, which prompts a laugh. Maggie notices Coco isn’t doing homework but chatting with Jeremy. Coco sees Ryder has left a message on the photo. Next day, the three of them arrive at school. Ben isn’t sure about Maggie coming in but Barry pointedly reminds him he’s late so he heads to work. Roo and Ryder turn up and Roo and Maggie go for a cup of tea. Ryder comments to Coco that Jeremy looks young for a counsellor. Coco rather abruptly tells him he has nothing to worry about.

Jasmine orders two coffees off Irene at the Diner. Irene notes she didn’t come home that night and guesses she was with Colby. Ebony is sat nearby and her ears prick up at the mention. Jasmine says Colby had a rough day and is dealing with family stuff. At school, Roo calls Ryder out for being inattentive in class. Ryder initially claims the class wasn’t very interesting before telling her what he’s found out about Jeremy. Roo isn’t entirely sympathetic, thinking it’s easy for Coco to relate to Jeremy. Ryder thinks she should be talking to him. Nearby, Maggie admits to Ben that she has to go home. He wants to drive her home or call Ziggy but she insists she can drive herself.

Jasmine surprises Colby with the coffees outside his flat. Colby says he’s going for a walk on the beach so Jasmine offers to walk with him. Colby ends up taking one of the coffees. As they leave, Ebony sneaks past them into the flat, putting gloves on, and begins searching the cupboards. Jasmine attempts to reassure Colby, saying he hasn’t given up on his family and there could be a break any time. Colby admits there’s a chance they might not be out there anymore. He says his stepfather treated his mum and Bella like his property, which may be the only reason they’re still alive. Back at the flat, Ebony finds the file on Bella and starts photographing the contents.

Ryder catches up with Coco outside the surf club; he says he’s not going to hassle her but wonders why she lied about Jeremy. Coco says she didn’t want him getting the wrong idea, which he did anyway. Ryder says if Jeremy’s nothing special then she doesn’t need him because she’s got Ryder to talk to. Coco is annoyed, saying Jeremy understands, and ends up breaking up with Ryder. Meanwhile, Maggie gets home and takes her temperature. She rings Ben, who tries to hide the call from Barry, and tells him she has a temperature but he’s not to come home and she’ll call Ziggy. Baz sees Ben who has to hang up. Ben tells him about Maggie’s cancer. Baz says he noticed the head scarf but thought Ben would have told him. He says if it was his wife she’d be his priority as well, but also thinks Ben shouldn’t have taken the job if he’s not committed to it and tells him to focus while he’s there. Meanwhile, Maggie goes to make a call but collapses before she can.

Ebony is waiting outside the Diner flat, looking at her pictures on her phone. Colby and Jasmine appear and Ebony thanks the two of them (but mostly Colby) for helping her after the “accident”. Jasmine notes she isn’t wearing her neck brace and she says her physio told her she can take it off if it’s not too painful. She says she’s starting at Salt that evening and invites them along but Colby says he’s busy. After Ebony’s gone, Jasmine suggests she and Colby do something but then gets a text calling her into work. Ebony goes back to her motel room, where she downloads the photos to her laptop and examines one of the articles. Meanwhile, Coco arrives home, on the phone to someone (probably Jeremy) complaining about Ryder. Maggie calls out from the bedroom; she’s too weak to stand up. Coco notes she’s burning up and Maggie says to call an ambulance.

Ryder tells Roo about Coco breaking up with him and admits what he said about Jeremy came out wrong. Roo suggests he forgets about the boyfriend/girlfriend stuff and just tries to be a friend to Coco. Nearby, Ben gets a call from Coco about Maggie being taken to hospital. He tells Barry but Baz wants him to stay and do his job. Ben says he quits. Tori is examining Maggie at the hospital as Ben joins Coco by her side. Tori says it’s a chest infection, which isn’t uncommon in stem cell transplants. They need to put her on antibiotics.

Ebony is sat at the bar in Salt, in uniform, when Colby turns up. She tells him Brody’s running late and offers to buy him a drink. She gets a text that she says is from her mum, claiming she’s been checking up on her since the accident. She adds that it’s been like that since her brother died and he was a cop too. Back at the hospital, Tori tells the Astonis that Maggie’s immune system has been compromised and she’s developed pneumonia; they need to see the test results to find out what exactly it is. Ben takes Tori into the corridor for a private chat, sensing it’s not good. Tori hopes Maggie will be better the next day but falls awkwardly silent when Ben asks what if she isn’t. Ben asks if she could die. Tori admits she doesn’t know.
