Extended Summary
Robbo is dragged through the base by the federal officers, with none of them responding to his questions. They take him into an office and handcuff him to the desk, leaving him staring at the montage of photos of him and his family. Shortly after, a senior officer, Lance, comes in and comments that it’s been a while. Robbo has a flashback of him and Lance chatting and drinking from water bottles in the office and says that he knows him and has been there before. Lance says that’s a start and uncuffs him.
Colby and Jasmine come back from the bedroom. Jasmine notes it was unexpected. Colby says it can’t happen again; not because of her, but because it would look bad. Despite this, they nearly kiss again and Colby excuses himself to get coffee from the Diner. Jasmine picks up a book and knocks the file of clippings on the floor. Downstairs, Colby finds Ryder and Raffy putting up posters about Ava on the pier and assures them it’s fine. Raffy is worried that there’s no information on Ava and Ryder does his best to reassure her.
Maggie is on the phone to Ziggy at the farm house, with Ben chipping in that if she wants anything he’ll bring it. Maggie says that Ziggy wants $1,000,000 and a lamborghini, and asks her to settle for chocolate. She then tells Ben that Ziggy’s getting better and Ben reminds her that Ziggy’s illness was nothing to do with the stimulation. Maggie agrees they don’t want a repeat of her earlier behaviour. Meanwhile, Colby arrives back at the flat with the coffees. Jasmine tells him she found the file by accident but Colby is angry and orders her out.
Lance tells Robbo they were hoping the photos would jog his memory. He introduces himself as Lance Salisbury and asks Robbo who he is. Robbo says he’s Beckett Reid and Lance says he’s not: Beckett Reid doesn’t exist. He shows Robbo a photo of the two of them in uniform. Robbo says he’s seen the file and Lance says they made it up and the crimes didn’t happen: He never committed a crime until Novak, which sounds like self-defence. He’s a cop named Ryan Shaw and his memory of his family being killed because of him is real. Robbo goes to leave but Lance says he can’t: There’s guards on the door to underline the point. He says they need to finish otherwise not knowing will eat Robbo up.
Leah finds Jasmine walking on the wharf. Jasmine tells her about finding the file and Colby throwing her out. She notes that he got what he wanted from her and Leah realises they slept together. Jasmine comments on her poor judgement with men. Outside the bait shop, Colby is admitting to Mason and Hunter that there’ve been no firm leads but advises them to keep looking. Leah comes over and tells him that she knows he’s got things on his mind but he can’t take it out on other people and Jasmine’s been through a lot.
At the Diner, Alf, Marilyn and Olivia all worry about the lack of news on Ava. Ben comes in and they ask him about Maggie. Ben admits that Ziggy’s in hospital and Coco’s with her; Olivia asks for time off to visit her. Marilyn gives Ben some food but he says he has to stick around to deliver a board to a customer. Alf says he’ll do that and Olivia offers to drive Coco home. Later, Ben presents the food to Maggie and they comment on being part of a tight-knit community. However, their mood dampens when they get a call from the hospital: Ziggy will be discharged in the morning after the stem cells are harvested but Maggie needs to come in for intensive radio- and chemotherapy.
Lance tells Robbo they were friends; Robbo was on the verge of uncovering high level corruption when someone, they still don’t know who, murdered his family as a warning. Robbo decided to go undercover. He has flashbacks to them arguing about it, including him being shown files on Kat and Peter Symes. Robbo says he was sent to kill Kat but Lance says he was sent to protect her. After Robbo went undercover, Novak was assigned to kill Kat but Robbo volunteered to go instead, only for Dylan to try and stop him. Robbo has flashbacks to Kat showing him the footage of Dylan and to him getting his tattoos done while Lance deleted all files on Ryan Shaw and replaced them with Beckett Reid files, including the passport. Lance explains they didn’t know if Robbo’s amnesia was genuine until they got the psychiatrist report and only stepped in when it looked like he’d go to jail. Robbo is angry that Kat died because they waited. Lance agrees mistakes were made but says they need to move forward.
Jasmine runs into Colby near the beach and he says he needed a break from work. He apologises for losing his temper, saying he’s not used to people being in his flat. Jasmine asks if it was an unsolved case; Colby replies that she’s his sister and he hasn’t seen her in a very long time. Back at his flat, he explains that his father was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Colby went off the rails and joined the River Boys but never fit in. Meanwhile, his mother remarried to Ross Nixon and had a daughter, Bella, who Colby adored. However, he didn’t get on with Ross, who was abusive. Colby tried to get his mother and Bella away from them but Ross took off with them. He joined the police to try and track them down and took the current posting because Mangrove River was the last place they were seen. He says that’s why he can’t get close to anyone: He may have to leave at any time.
Marilyn brings a casserole round for Mason and Raffy. Raffy worries about the fact Ava’s been missing for 48 hours, which Colby thought was important. Marilyn tries to get her to come home but she says she needs to be with her family that night and Mason agrees. Next morning, Mason and Raffy reflect on Ava. Mason says she might not be alone but Raffy doesn’t think her being with someone who’s keeping her from the police is any better. Raffy sees a note has been pushed under the floor and says it’s a ransom note. Mason reads it: “Justin Morgan Get $25,000. We’ll contact you with further instructions. No cops or you’ll never see Ava again.”
