Extended Summary

As Tori rushes Baby Luc to surgery, she reassures Ash that she will look after his niece. Leah calls the school to find VJ and is surprised to learn he didn’t show up today. Alf heads out to find VJ himself. Kat tries to assuage Ash of any guilt he feels for not getting Luc medical attention sooner. Leah’s glad to see VJ arrive at the hospital, but VJ immediately has a go at Ash and Kat for letting Luc get so sick. Mason wanders in, starting his shift, and the group demands an update on Luc. He lets them know Tori used to be a paediatric surgical registrar, so she knows what she’s doing. Mason finds Tori exiting surgery. She’s exhausted and emotional. The surgeon has just arrived and will finish up. Tori was able to remove the blockage but Luc has gone into septic shock. Tori tries to hold back her tears, she’s particularly affected by her young patient. She’s worried Luc won’t be able to fight it. Tori wants to update the family immediately but Mason counsels her to complete her notes first, follow procedure. He will update the family himself. Tori tells him not to sugar coat it, they need to know the truth. Tempers and blame threaten to boil over in the waiting room, then Mason arrives with the update: surgery went well but Luc may not make it. Ash, VJ, Leah and to a lesser extent Kat begin arguing again, only to be interrupted by Irene – arriving from out of town after a call from Alf. Later, Tori arrives and informs them that Luc is in an induced coma and on a ventilator. Hopefully this will stop Luc from going into organ failure, but there’s nothing else they can do. The next 24 to 48 hours are critical. Tori assures the group that this was something Luc was born with, it’s nobody’s fault. Ash and Leah thank Tori for stepping up to do the surgery. She just wishes she had better news for them. The group head into Luc’s room and the sight is upsetting, however Kat hangs back, outside the door, uncomfortable. Kat offers to head home to get fresh clothes for Ash. When Tori asks Kat if she’s okay, Kat confesses that she hasn’t been supportive enough of Ash and Luc – taking extra shifts and avoiding home as much as possible. She’s still waiting for her supposed ‘maternal instinct’ to kick in, but it may never. Tori tries to calm her, Kat’s been trained to remain calm in stressful situations, but Kat’s on a roll. She wonders what’s wrong with her, she doesn’t feel anything, even today when Luc’s extremely ill. Kat’s lack of warmth for Luc is in stark contrast to Tori’s emotional concern earlier. Later, at Leah’s house, VJ says the last few weeks without Luc have actually been great – he’s been able to go to school and see friends – but Leah was right all along. He should never have given up on Luc. Leah argues VJ has been grieving and shouldn’t feel guilty for doing what he had to. At the diner, Tori becomes emotional again, discussing Luc’s illness with Justin and Mason. Everyone was relying on her and there was no one to help her. This is why she left paediatrics, it was too hard to deal with sick children. Late at night, Kat watches silently from the door as Ash comforts Luc in her hospital bed, confessing his love for her and encouraging her to fight. Can Kat maintain a relationship with Ash if she can’t bond with Luc?

Justin still can’t find Brody. Raffy suggests she speak to Hope, she might know someone dodgy who will know where Brody is. Raffy’s concerned about her family. Justin tells her not to worry, he’ll find Brody. Justin runs into Lena outside the Surf Club and tries to ask if she knows where Brody is, but she tells him to leave her alone or she’ll call the cops. Justin leaves a message on Lena’s phone, desperate for answers about Brody’s whereabouts. Raffy offers to speak with Lena, but Justin doesn’t want her near the drug dealer. Raffy steals Lena’s number from Justin’s phone and meets up with her at the beach and makes an emotional plea for her brother. Lena gives in. In the morning Lena meets Justin and Mason. Someone thinks Brody is in a bad way and in Mangrove River. She hands over a list of addresses and names and warns Justin to reign in his attitude, these people don’t like visitors. Justin and Mason speed off, Morgan brothers to the rescue!
