Chris Hemsworth picks up 2013 People’s Choice Award
Chris Hemsworth, the soapstar-cum-Hollywood superstar who kick started his acting career playing Kim Hyde in Home and Away from 2004 to 2007, won Favourite Action Movie Star at yesterday’ss 2013 People’ss Choice Awards in LA.
Chris first played the character of Thor in the 2011 film of the same name, and then again in the 2012 film The Avengers (released as Avengers Assemble in the UK and Ireland.
As well as Favourite Action Movie Star, Hemsworth was nominated for Favourite Movie Superhero for his portrayal of Thor (won by Robert Downie, Jr. as Iron Man), and Favourite On-Screen Chemistry for his and Kristen Stewart’ss relationship in Snow White and the Huntsman (won by Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson / Liam Hemsworth, The Hunger Games).
The annual awards are voted for by fans, and News.com.au reports that a record breaking 475 million votes were cast this year. Other notable winners at the coveted award ceremony include The Hunger Games, which picked up 5 awards, including Favourite Movie, Favourite Face of Heroism and Favourite Movie Franchise, and Katy Perry, who walked home with three awards.
However it’ss not all joy for Hemsworth. An online survey conducted by the LA Times has rated The Avengers Assemble, in which Chris reprises his role of Thor, as the most overrated movie of the year. It probably won’st come as too much of a blow, however, as the film has raked in over $1.5billion worldwide since it hit cinema screens in April 2012. The summer blockbuster beat both Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises to come top of the annual box office stats.
Chris is reprising his superhero role once again in Thor: The Dark World, which is due for release in October 2013. The actor, who has gone from strength to strength since leaving Summer Bay in 2007, is also expected to pick up the part again for the second installment of The Avengers, which is currently scheduled for release in 2015. He stars alongside Olivia Wilde in Rush, a biography of Formula 1 champion driver Niki Lauda which is due to hit cinemas in September.
In a stranger move, it was rumoured last week that Chris is one of the front runners to play Christian Grey in the screen adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey. He has beaten the likes of and Robert Pattinson, Channing Tatum and Ryan Gosling to top lists on fan websites debating the best actor to play the saucy role.
