Chapter 2

The sound of crying woke Matilda and Lucas.

“Can you go check on Melissa?” Lucas asked sleepily. Matilda sighed and got out of bed. She walked into Melissa’s room.

“Hello Mel,” she said quietly. She picked Melissa up and rocked her.

“Go back to sleep…” she whispered. In minutes Melissa fell back asleep. Matilda lay her back on the bed. Matilda went back to her room and snuggled up beside Lucas.

“I’ve got to go to work,” Lucas said. He hurried around the house collecting bits and pieces.

“Calm down,” Matilda laughed. She put Melissa on the floor with a few teddy bears.

“Where’s my tie?” Lucas panicked.

“Could it be the black one on the sofa?” Matilda said laughing.

“Thank you!” he said. He kissed her cheek.

“Luke, Calm down!” Matilda said.

“I can’t, my boss is really strict!” Lucas said.

“He needs to give you a rest, I’m going to go talk to him,” Matilda said.

“No you’re not, he’ll eat me alive!” Lucas said.

“He’s so hard on you, You’re stressed out an tired.” Matilda said.

“No I’m not,” Lucas protested.

“Look at yourself in the mirror,” Matilda said.

“Listen I really need this job, I’m the man of this family, I have to earn money to put Melissa into school and to feed all of us,” Lucas said.

“Fine,” Matilda stomped off. Lucas sighed.

“Mattie…” He said.

“Go away, your boss is probably looking for you,” Matilda said.

“Mattie,” Lucas said again. Matilda handed him his briefcase.

“Go…to…” she said. “WORK!”

Lucas leant in to kiss her but she turned her face away.

“Daddy,” Melissa said.

“Yes Mel,” Lucas said still looking at Matilda. Melissa shrieked. Lucas went over to her and kissed her on her head. Melissa waved good-bye to him. Matilda sat down on a chair.

“Bye, I love you,” Lucas said. Matilda didn’t say anything.
