Off The Rails kicks off. Mali’s got big plans. Will Leah derail the platform party?

Extended Summary

Levi greets Mackenzie as she comes back from a surf. Nearby, John pulls up next to Mali and comments on him having a class at that time. Mali says he’s moved things around because he’s taking Abigail away in a camper van for their anniversary. He checks with Mackenzie that Abigail’s shifts are covered. John realises Abigail doesn’t know and Mali warns him not to say anything. John points out that Abigail’s coming over and asks her if she’s got anything planned. Mali ushers her away as he insists he didn’t say anything.

At the Diner, Justin tries to tell Leah she can’t come to the festival, calling it a work event. Leah says he doesn’t need to look after her. Justin says he’d be happy for her to come if she was in the right head space. Alf tries to get them to go home and talk about it but Leah says she’s going to go home and pack. Justin says the train’s invitation only and asks her to at least think of Sonny, since she makes him uncomfortable.

At the surf club, John stops Mali and says that instead of taking Abigail camping he should propose. Mali asks if he’s joking and he confirms he is. Mali goes over to Lacey and tells her he’s shutting the board shop for the rest of the week while he and Abby are away. Lacey offers to keep the place open but Jo suggests she come to the festival instead. Eddie turns up and Jo checks there’s still a ticket for Lacey. Mali decides the shop stays shut. Upstairs in Salt, Sonny and Dana talk about the event. Remi greets Mackenzie and Levi as they come in and invites Mackenzie to the festival; Levi is working whilst Abigail is keen to come but Remi only has one ticket and wants Mackenzie to come as a thank you for all her support.

Lacey and Jo arrive back at the beach house. Jo encourages Lacey to come but Lacey isn’t sure about going without Theo, recalling that he was supposed to be the label’s first artist. Jo convinces her that Theo would want her to have an adventure. Back at Salt, Abigail tries to beg Remi to let her come. At the bar, Levi encourages Mackenzie to go, reminding her they’re supposed to be living their lives as normal. Mackenzie lets Remi know she’s coming, to Abigail’s disappointment.

Dana and Sonny are getting ready at the flat. Leah turns up and a strained Dana comments on her being back again. Sonny claims he didn’t reply to her texts because he was busy. Leah asks if Justin was right about him being uncomfortable. Despite some frantic gestures from Dana, Sonny says he’s not and she should come since it’s a big deal for Justin. After Leah’s gone, Dana suggests he was trying to say no.

Abigail arrives home and shows Mali the flyer for the festival. Mali dismisses it, saying it’s not his sort of thing and they barely know Eddie. Abigail protests that they never have fun, before realising that’s more offensive than she intended and saying they don’t have this sort of fun. Mali says it’s too short notice when he has a business to run. Abigail leaves, disappointed, and Mali smiles to himself.

At the Diner, Leah is on the phone to Marilyn making sure she can cover for her. Alf asks why she’s going when it’s clear Justin doesn’t want her to. Leah says she wants to support Sonny, reiterating he’s the only person that understands. Alf suggests that she’s focusing more on what she’s lost than what she’s still got. Leah insists she’s going but does hesitate momentarily as she leaves.

At the farm house, Mali asks Mackenzie to do him a favour and take Abigail to the platform party with her while he picks up the camper van. Mackenzie puts the invite to Abigail, saying she can’t get her onto the train but can take her to the party. Levi confirms he can give them a lift although Abigail will need to get a cab back. Mali says he’s fine with it and Abigail excitedly rushes off to get changed out of her uniform.

Justin, Remi and Eddie are joined by Dana and Sonny on the platform although nothing’s happened yet. Dana tells Justin that Sonny told Leah she could come, to Justin’s frustration. The train pulls up, full of enthusiastic partygoers and prompting the music and drinks to start. Down by the beach, Lacey gets a text from Sonny saying the train’s there. She realises Jo is still having trouble deciding between Tane and Eddie and suggests the weekend might help her work it out. They come across Leah, who explains to Lacey that she’s going to the station. Lacey says she wasn’t sure about going without Theo but she realised he wouldn’t want her stuck in the past and avoiding everything that’s still there. Leah sees the truth in this and gives her a hug, saying she’ll go home and see her when she gets back.

At the surf club, Alf and John are doing a stock check. Mali turns up and asks John for a favour. John jokingly wonders if Mali wants him to go camping instead of Abigail. Mali asks him to give him a lift to pick up the camper van. John is initially reluctant but agrees when Alf says he’ll go instead. At the station, Levi drops off Mackenzie and Abigail. He privately tells Mackenzie to not stress but maybe stay off the alcohol just in case. She runs over to greet Justin and Remi. Meanwhile, Alf finds Leah crying by the beach and notes he thought she’d be on the train. Leah says he was right: She thought being friends with Sonny would help her move on, but instead she’s just used him to replace Theo, and been living her grief instead of dealing with it. Alf hugs her.

At the station, night has fallen. Abigail is drinking heavily, throwing a can into a bin and then taking Mackenzie’s. Mackenzie declines to dance with her. A young man comes over to Mackenzie, introducing himself as Isaac and his friend as Holden and explaining his cousin’s playing. He asks her to dance but she turns him down. Lacey and Jo arrive. Justin tells Sonny to back him up when Leah gets there. Lacey tells them that Leah isn’t coming. Remi interrupts to remind them they’re meant to be working and might be able to sign up another act. Eddie greets Jo and Lacey but Jo quickly retreats. Eddie tells Lacey that he’s going to propose to Jo this weekend.

Next morning, Alf tells John to arrange to have the buggy serviced when the inventory’s finished, while he takes a newly-arrived Leah to breakfast. John complains about being excluded but Alf just tells him to do the rosters. John then gets a call from Mali and learns he’s looking for Abigail. Meanwhile, Abigail is waking up under a pile of coats on the train and realises it’s moving, in the middle of nowhere.
