Lacey’s resolve starts to crumble. John’s ready to reclaim his role. David’s drowning in the unknown.
Extended Summary
Justin runs into Eden near the surf club. She starts to tell him there’s good news, then stops and says it isn’t her news to tell and Remi will tell him himself. She walks on and encounters John, who officially RSVPs to the wedding. Eden is pleased since they weren’t sure how things were with him. John starts asking her if she’s sorted her dress, hair and make-up which panics her into leaving.
Theo finds Lacey on the beach. She asks if he thinks she’s being selfish and, when he doesn’t answer, sarcastically thanks him for having her back. Theo suggests she wants him to be honest and says that he doesn’t know what it’s like to lose her mum but Jo and David do.
At the Diner, Leah is telling Justin and Marilyn she shouldn’t have got involved. Theo turns up and Leah says she didn’t mean for Lacey to think she was judging her. Justin says she kind of was and Leah says she didn’t mean to upset her. Theo thinks Lacey needed to hear it and says she’s gone to see David. At the beach house, Jo is listening to the recording over and over again. David thinks she should stop torturing herself but Jo is hoping it will jog a memory. Lacey turns up and realises what it is. Jo says she has no memory of making the call.
John has had a coffee at Salt. He apologises to Eden for upsetting her. Eden notes she was expecting to be doing this with Cash and it’s less exciting without him. John offers to let her bounce ideas off him and asks how the other celebrant, Jennifer, is going. Although she hasn’t sorted out an order of service, Eden says she’s been great and sorted out all the paperwork.
Lacey is expressing astonishment to David that Jo wouldn’t remember that. She argues that Jo seemed clear-headed on the call. David says emotional trauma can block out a memory and finding their mother in that moment must have been horrific. He assumes Lacey is there to see if there’s any news. Lacey says she actually came to check on him and admits she hasn’t thought about what it might be like for him. David suggests checking on Jo too but Lacey leaves that to him. David goes to Jo’s room and tells her Lacey has gone. He says he’s going to dig into it more and get the pathology results from the hospital. Jo miserably observes that she might have forgotten being drunk as well.
Leah and Justin are walking to the coffee cart with Justin trying to reassure her that Lacey isn’t angry. Nearby, John is on the phone to Jennifer, saying Cash and Eden decided to revert to the original plan once his schedule was free and he’ll make sure she’s paid in full. Marilyn comes past and he tells her he’s sacked Cash and Eden’s celebrant. Marilyn hopes they’ll be all right with it.
John heads to Salt and tells Eden that he’s fired Jennifer. Eden is horrified, saying Jennifer’s already done so much work. John says she’s a professional and Eden asks what that makes him. John says he only gave it up because a very dear friend was in trouble and asks her to let him do this. Eden asks if she gets approval on what he wears. John says so long as it’s one of the two suits he owns.
David and Jo are eating dinner and David stops Jo playing the recording again. He answers a phone call about the pathology report and asks for a summary, then tells Jo the report was clean, stressing that they expected that but it’s good to have it confirmed. At the Diner flat, Lacey tells Theo about hearing the recording. She thanks him for making her go, saying he’s not like anyone she’s ever been with. Their kiss is interrupted by Leah, who has brought some food and apologises to Lacey. Lacey gets a text from David inviting her to Salt to meet him and Jo. They encourage her to go.
At Salt, Eden is on the phone to Cash, saying she’s actually pleased John is back. Lacey turns up to join David and Jo. David says he’s looked over all the evidence but found no new leads: Unless Jo’s memory comes back, they’ll probably never know what happened. Later, Lacey joins Jo outside and says it wasn’t the outcome they were hoping for. She thinks Jo has to try and remember. Jo thinks David only did this to get Lacey back in their lives. Lacey says that might be how it started but now he wants answers too. David appears and he and Jo leave.
Jo returns to her bedroom where she gets her tablet and does a search for how to recover traumatic repressed memories. Her eyes alight on an advertisement for hypnosis. Meanwhile, John arrives back at Salt while Eden is trying to work and says Jennifer has sent him the paperwork. He starts bombarding her with questions about witnesses and readings. Eden eventually snaps, saying he’s stressing her out and to turn around and leave.
Leah is serving Justin and Theo tiramisu at the Diner as a peace offering. Lacey turns up and tells them that David’s got no information to offer and Jo doesn’t remember anything, so he just wants them to accept it and move on. Next morning, Justin finds David on the beach and admits he knows what’s been going on. David says he got the girls’ hopes up for nothing and has realised that he hasn’t accepted the result of the investigation and needs answers.
John turns up at the Lyrik house with coffee and apologises to Eden for his timing last night. He asks if now is a good time for her to give him pointers for the ceremony. Eden agrees and he asks her about the bridal party. Eden says Tane’s best man and Abigail’s maid of honour and gives him the guest list for the small and intimate ceremony. John asks who’ll walk her down the aisle. Eden freezes and realises she has no idea.
