Justin helps to distract Leah. Cash butts heads with the new boss. Lacey’s past catches up with her.
Extended Summary
Tane is running a class on the beach when Cash comes along, taking a run. Tane comments that he thought Cash would go in early to make an impression on the new sergeant starting today. He suggests Cash point the sergeant towards his recent case and give Tane credit when he gets rewarded. Cash says he doesn’t get rewards, then draws Tane’s attention to the fact his class are slacking off.
Theo asks Lacey when the accident happened and she says it was two years ago. Theo pulls her into a hug, then winces at his sore ribs. Despite him insisting he doesn’t mind, Lacey decides they’re done discussing this. Meanwhile, Leah opens the fridge and realises she’s still buying enough groceries for three people. Justin tries to cheer her up, saying Theo was never going to live there indefinitely. Leah says she even misses Justin and Theo being loud and competitive over video games. Justin suggests they go for a walk after breakfast but Leah says she has the books to do.
At the station, the new sergeant, David Langham, addresses the officers, saying he’s mostly heard good things and there’s one thing they need to know about him. Cash arrives and David corrects it to two things: He’s not a fan of lateness and the community comes first. As he ends the brief speech, Cash tries to say his shift doesn’t start for twenty minutes. David knows who he is and tells him to wait in the interview room.
Theo and Lacey are walking towards the surf club. Theo likes that she opened up to him but Lacey tells him not to treat her differently because she got upset in front of him. They see Tane approaching with his class and Lacey recalls him being there when Cash picked up her and Dana. Theo says he needs to talk to him so Lacey goes on ahead to get drinks. Theo tells Tane that he’s doing physio at the hospital but wants to use post-op rehab to get back to normal.
Justin finds Leah has finished the books and is now dusting to keep busy. He comments that they used to dream of having alone time and Leah says she’s not going to spend all day in bed with him. Justin has another suggestion and holds out a game console controller, saying he’s lost his gaming buddy and they need to try new things. Leah says no racing games and Justin suggests Zombie Apocalypse.
David joins Cash in the interview room with two files, one of which is Cash’s personnel file. He notes Cash was charged with grievous bodily harm. Cash says it was dropped. David says he also once harboured a known fugitive. Cash says it was to catch a dirty cop. David says he was still suspended. Cash says he was invited back after an investigation, and was gone six months which helped him realise he needed to be there. The other file is the case file on the recent investigation. David comments on him taking a civilian with him on a rescue mission. Cash says they rescued the witnesses and put a gang leader in prison. David says that was only because of last minute evidence from the gang leader’s girlfriend. He notes the name Lacey Miller and asks Cash about her. Outside the surf club, Tane joins Theo and Lacey and says they can’t get started until Theo has medical clearance. Lacey agrees with him and Tane says he’ll get started on a program while Theo sorts it. Theo says he wants to get back to his old self.
Cash tells David that Lacey’s staying at Reefton Lake Backpackers and wasn’t the criminal, she was in a coercive relationship with the gang leader. David says to bring her in and not to question him. Cash goes to the surf club where he briefly chats with Tane about the new sergeant. Theo and Lacey appear, having got a message from Cash. Cash tells Lacey she needs to come to the station, calling it routine. Theo tells Lacey to go on ahead, since he has the medical clearance to sort out.
Cash and Lacey arrive at the station and Cash takes her through to the interview room. David enters a moment later: It is clear he and Lacey know each other and Lacey isn’t happy to see him. David explains she’s his daughter. David insists his transferring there was a coincidence; he saw her name in the file and didn’t know it was her until she came in, since she’s changed to her mother’s maiden name. Lacey says someone has to keep her memory alive. David asks what her mother would think of gangs and street racing and Lacey retorts that she’s not there. She walks out, saying she wants to go. David gestures for Cash to follow her.
Justin and Leah are playing the game with Justin stunned at how good Leah is. Leah says she’s seen him and Theo play a thousand times. Theo comes in behind them as Leah tells Justin she knows his weak spot. As Justin wonders what it is, Leah “kills” him and says he’s easily distracted. Justin says not to tell Theo, who then announces his presence. Later, Theo comments on being replaced so easily before asking to be taken to the hospital, explaining that he wants to get medical clearance for rehab and wants to be the man Lacey first knew. Leah is surprised that he’s doing it for her.
Cash drives Lacey back to town. Lacey says to be careful with David, calling him a stickler for the rules until it doesn’t suit him. She gets out and meets Theo, who tells her about going to the hospital and invites her to come. Lacey says she’ll wait at his place. She goes to the flat, seemingly on the verge of a panic attack, and grabs a bag and starts packing.
David is setting up his office, including a photo of him and Lacey with two other women. Cash comes in and David says he’s not going to discuss his personal life with him. Cash says David has already dragged him into his personal life and asks if he sees the double standard there. David tells him to close the door on his way out. Cash goes to the surf club and tells Tane that he and David aren’t fans of each other. He mentions that David isn’t keen on the way he involved Tane in the case.
Tane goes to the police station and introduces himself to David, saying there wasn’t time for Cash to stop him coming. He adds that Cash is a mate. David ponders that Cash couldn’t stop a mate getting involved in a police operation and invites him through to the interview room.
