Kirby oversteps Mali’s boundaries. Harper’s painful truth comes out. Perri’s dad is back in town.
Extended Summary
Kirby and Mali are overlooking the beach with Kirby commenting on how life goes on. Alf approaches and asks if there’s any news of the funeral. Kirby says she hasn’t spoken to Cash or Eden, and doesn’t think anyone has, but will let him know. She asks Mali if he’s had second thoughts about the art competition, since the deadline’s tomorrow, but he hasn’t.
Harper comes home to find Dana there. They discuss Perri and how Xander saw Harper and Tane talking about him. Dana cautiously asks if Harper is using Perri as an excuse to not tell Tane about the baby, after using Felicity and then saying it’s not the right time. Harper accuses her of judging her and says she won’t tell her anything. Dana says she’s cutting her out like she is Tane and insists she explain. Harper says she’s not worried about the baby: She’s in love with Tane and has to hide it from him, and once he knows about the baby they’ll be bound together.
Perri confirms to Tane that his dad wants him involved with a job and said he’d call back later with the details. Tane thinks Perri should have told him to go to hell. Perri says he’s still his dad even though he wants nothing to do with him; he’s blocked the number but thinks his dad will find a way somehow. Tane tells him to just keep saying no. In the surf club, Kirby knocks into Mali’s painting and comments on the fact that he won’t hang it up or enter the competition but won’t take it home either. Mali still doesn’t want to enter. Kirby suggests they get lunch.
Dana tells Harper she didn’t mean to upset her. Harper says Tane doesn’t feel the same way and that’s not going to change. Dana says she needs to separate her feelings from the fact she needs to tell Tane about the baby. Later, at the surf club, Harper watches from a distance as Tane gives Perri a pep-talk. She then approaches Tane, asking about Perri and saying she needs to talk to him about something else. Before she can do so however, Harper’s phone rings: The caller ID shows it’s Perri’s dad Carl.
Alf turns up at the coffee cart where Leah and Marilyn explain they’re busy because of Salt being closed. Alf thinks it would help if people had a chance to pay their respects. Dana arrives and talks about how hard it was to see Cash go through that. At the Diner, Mali is trying to make small talk with Kirby. Alf helps Marilyn bring some things in and Kirby tells him she hasn’t heard back from Eden. Alf asks Mali if he’s changed his mind about the competition. Marilyn hears and Kirby shows her a photo of the painting on her phone. Mali wonders when she took it and she points out she’s had plenty of chance. Mali gets fed up and heads back to work.
Tane and Harper exit the surf club. Harper explains Carl got her number because she called him when Perri was missing and regrets not answering his call. Tane thinks she should ignore it but Harper thinks she might be able to defuse the situation and tries to call Carl back. Meanwhile, Carl surprises Perri at the gym, saying he started looking for him at the youth programme. Perri says he’s busy and Carl suggests he’s got five minutes for the man that raised him.
Alf approaches Mali at the board shop and gives him some leftovers Marilyn packaged up for him. He knows he was wrong to bring up the competition but says he’ll be in the office if Mali changes his mind or wants to talk about it. Meanwhile, Harper and Tane are walking near the beach. Harper has found Carl didn’t phone the office. Tane wants to put Carl straight. Harper warns him that the relationship between a parent and a child can be complicated when abuse is involved and survival can be about seeking approval. Tane decides to head back to the gym but recalls Harper wanted to say something. She says they’ll talk about it later.
Carl continues to try to get Perri to do one more job, saying family always comes first and indicating he’ll come looking for him if he doesn’t turn up. Tane turns up and asks if Perri invited Carl there before telling Perri to go to the office and Carl to leave. Carl says he’ll see Perri soon enough. Tane checks on Perri, then follows Carl outside.
Tane tells Carl to stay away. Carl accuses Tane of turning Perri against him and Tane says Carl doesn’t deserve Perri. Perri has followed them out and Carl tries to tell him to come with him but he shakes his head. Carl says he’s Tane’s problem now and goes to his car. After Tane and Perri have gone, Carl does a search for “summer bay fit owner” on his phone and finds an article about Tane being released on parole over the baby snatching and getting a seven year suspended sentence.
At the Diner, Marilyn briefly chats to Harper, who is waiting for Dana. Leah tells Marilyn that if Salt stays closed they could offer to do the catering for the funeral. Dana turns up and Harper says she was going to tell Tane, then Carl called and derailed everything. She says she’s going to enjoy this for as long as she can before having to involve Tane. Dana shows her the fluffy rabbit she’s bought.
At the farm house, Perri worries about not being at work. Tane says he’s given him an early mark and thinks Carl will stay away now. Perri isn’t so sure. Tane says it’s okay to be disappointed that Carl isn’t what he wants him to be. He gives Perri the manaia back, saying he was waiting for the right time.
Mali is packing up at the board shop. Kirby asks if he needs a hand. Mali says she knew the painting was private and showed it to everyone, telling her to back off. Alf watches the disagreement from the office. At the Diner, Leah tells Marilyn she’s heard back from Eden and the funeral isn’t going to be in Summer Bay but where Felicity and Cash grew up. Marilyn says she thought it would be where her brother, business and friends are. Leah explains Cash wants her buried with their parents. Marilyn understands but wonders how the rest of them will pay their respects.
Alf approaches Mali again, saying he was surprised to see him snap at Kirby like that, and asks if he wants to tell him what’s going on.
