Extended Summary

Mali runs into Zara outside the surf club and asks what she said to Rose. Zara eventually says Rose was interfering in their business and she told her to stay out. Mali is annoyed and Zara says he’s not the same person she left behind. Mali replies that that’s the point and to stay away from his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Marilyn is bewildered at Roo’s suggestion. Roo tries to suggest Marilyn tell Alf that Leah needed her but Marilyn refuses to drag Leah into the lies, saying Roo caused the mess and can fix it.

Mali meets up with Rose on the beach and says he’s had a word with Zara. Rose doesn’t think it’s enough however and insists he has to choose. She says Zara muscling in on their date last night was manipulative. Mali says it wasn’t cool but suggests Zara doesn’t know many people in town. Rose is unimpressed. At the surf club, Xander sees Zara sitting on her own and tries to walk past her. Zara says she wouldn’t want to talk to her either. Xander sits with her and offers to listen, despite Zara suggesting it would be seen as cavorting with the enemy. Zara says Rose is lucky to have Xander, before noting Rose has Xander, Mali and a job she loves, while she has none of that.

Marilyn arrives at the Diner and Irene greets her. Marilyn wonders if Irene should be there, saying she’s happy to take over. Irene gets increasingly annoyed as Marilyn pushes the point, saying she’s already paranoid about people looking at her. She apologises for snapping and suggests they have a talk. Meanwhile, Xander meets up with Rose on the beach. Rose tells him about her ultimatum to Mali and isn’t encouraged by the fact he hesitated. Xander suggests Zara’s behaviour might not just be about Mali but about her not having much in her life.

Marilyn has filled Irene in on Roo asking her to lie to Alf. Irene says Marilyn was right to stand her ground. Rose comes in and Irene turns on her, criticising her for arresting her in front of everyone and saying she could have taken her outside to do it quietly. Rose says she doesn’t get to choose when she arrests someone and, as Irene continues to push it, reminds her she broke the law. Irene realises everyone is staring and blames Rose, who says she’ll get her coffee elsewhere. Later, Marilyn tells Irene she’s given everyone free muffins. Irene admits she was wrong to have a go at Rose and did break the law, and needs to take responsibility for it. She drags Marilyn out.

Xander is annoyed to find Mali working at the board shop when both Zara and Rose are in bits. Mali says no-one understands his situation with Zara, and as Xander doesn’t, he doesn’t get to have an opinion. Xander agrees he doesn’t but also says Rose is better off without Mali if he can’t put her first. Mali meets up with Zara on the beach and tells her about Rose’s ultimatum. He says he’s choosing Rose. Zara admits that she’s giving up law and says that her parents are going to be disappointed but wouldn’t be if she was giving it up for Mali.

Irene takes Marilyn to see Roo and says they need their heads banging together. She tells Roo that she was wrong to ask Marilyn to lie to Alf and needs to take responsibility for telling her to move out. She says they’ve both made a lot of bad decisions lately, going back to Stunning Organics, and this is another one. Later, Irene is making tea as Marilyn and Roo chat. Roo says she was stuck alone in hospital and needed someone to blame, and Marilyn never visited her. Marilyn admits she felt too guilty. Roo admits she now knows it was the CEO’s fault, not Marilyn’s, and asks her to move back in.

Zara reminds Mali of how hard her parents worked to put her through college, including her dad doing double shifts. Mali reminds her she got her degree but she says she hates the idea of working in a law firm. Mali recalls how his mum felt about him moving to Summer Bay. He says he’s not going to go back with Zara but she can stay there while she works things out. Meanwhile, Irene notes that now Marilyn and Roo are back on good terms, they can help her and John out with Alf’s long service presentation. She asks for some photos of Alf. Roo goes to look for some and gives Marilyn her keys back.

Rose is nervously waiting for Mali at Salt, with bemused interjections from Xander. Mali turns up and says he’s told Zara she can stay on at the house but that he doesn’t need to be there. He suggests he move in with Rose until Zara’s gone. Rose agrees. Later, as they walk through a park area, Xander comments to Rose that both Bree and Mali have moved in without him being consulted now. Irene approaches them and apologises to Rose for what she said earlier. Rose knows Irene was just trying to help someone and Irene says it’s up to the court now. Rose comments to Xander that her day’s getting better.

Zara is aghast at Mali packing his bags, saying he promised to help her. Mali says this is best for everyone. Zara protests that Mali’s the only one she can turn to.
