Rose meets Mali’s mother. Eden supports a broken Cash. Can Marilyn convince Alf to get help?
Extended Summary
Xander shows Eden onto the Salt balcony and points Cash out to her, saying he’ll be in trouble if he’s caught drinking in uniform. Eden joins Cash, who is pleased to see her but wonders how she found him. With Xander loitering awkwardly out of Cash’s view, Eden says she came in for a coffee and Xander told her Cash was out there. Cash invites her to join him for a drink but doesn’t take much convincing to go back to hers and get out of uniform.
At the Diner flat, Rose is aghast at Mali springing the meeting with his mother on her with basically no notice. Mali explains about his mother seeing the photos and asking questions. Rose checks that his mother knows nothing about her. Mali assures her his mum will love her. Rose checks his six siblings won’t be there and Mali says he’ll make sure it’s just his mum and Elandra.
Alf is sat at the coffee cart and complains to Marilyn about John, who has just turned up. Alf storms off and John tells Marilyn that Alf has a hearing problem. Marilyn suggests that maybe he just wasn’t interested in what John was saying. John says he knows when Alf’s deliberately ignoring him. Marilyn thinks she’d have noticed. John says Mali thinks it too.
At the Lyrik house, Cash is in the shower, standing still as the water washes over him. Eden comes in and asks if he’s okay. Cash flirtatiously invites her to join him but quickly shuts down her attempts to ask what’s wrong with him, taking a towel to dry himself off and heading to the bedroom. Eden follows with his clothes, which she hangs up. Cash is sat on the bed in his boxers. Eden again tries to get him to talk to her. Cash says they’ll talk in the morning and lies down in the bed, seemingly falling asleep straightaway.
Rose tries to get Mali to give her advice on what she should wear, reminding him he wore thongs on their first date. Mali says the only thing to remember is to pronounce his sister’s name right (she’s been saying “Elundra”). Xander comes home and Mali tells him about taking Rose to meet his mother. Rose realises they’ve already spoken about it. Mali quickly heads to bed as Xander tries to reassure Rose.
Next morning, Eden wakes up and finds Cash isn’t next to her, even though his uniform is still there. She exits the bedroom, calling out to him. Some time later, she finds him walking on the beach in his casual clothes. He initially tries to walk away from her before telling her about Felicity being blackmailed. He is upset that she didn’t trust him.
Rose and Mali wait in a park area as Elandra turns up with her mother. Rose and Elandra greet each other and Mali greets the family before introducing his mother as Vicky. She corrects it to Victoria and gets Rose to walk with her. Mali is confused since she sounded excited on the phone. Elandra says she’s not happy about him keeping secrets and didn’t say a word in the two hours down there.
Marilyn serves John at the coffee cart with Alf sat nearby and says Alf heard everything she said last night. John checks Alf was sitting across from her and says people on forums say they often rely on facial expressions. Alf comes over and asks Marilyn about the conversation before heading off to a fishing charter.
Mali and Elandra walk behind Victoria and Rose, with Mali still unsure about things. Victoria tells them to quieten down and notes “Maliyan” only seems to tell half the truth, asking Rose if he’s like that with her. Mali tries to step in to avoid her being put on the spot but Rose says they made a decision to wait before meeting family when they got back together. Victoria is stunned that they’ve already broken up once and sends Mali to the car to get food, with Elandra going with him. Elandra says now she’s in trouble for keeping quiet.
On the balcony at Salt, Eden tries to reassure Cash over the fact that Felicity’s attacker was caught. Cash says it should give Felicity and the other survivors closure but he feels it’s too little, too late. He admits he really wanted to hurt him and thinks he would if he had the chance again. He wonders if he should just resign from the police.
Mali, Rose, Victoria and Elandra are sat eating and Victoria now tells Rose to call her Vicky. They discuss how Mali got his name, with Rose having picked up on Victoria calling him Maliyan before. Victoria says he was conceived in Gamilaraay country, where the word means “wedge-tailed eagle”, a protector. She notes she knew at the time he’d complete the family. Elandra says her name means “by the sea”, which she takes to mean she was conceived on the beach. Victoria wonders where Rose got her name from but the best she can offer is that her mother liked flowers. Mali says it suits her.
Marilyn takes Alf’s cup from behind and asks what his plans are for the afternoon. Alf says just the usual. Standing with her back to him, Marilyn asks if Roo got the flowers from Irene. Alf tells her to look at him when she’s talking to him. Marilyn goes over to John’s table. He asks her to talk to Alf, since Roo’s away and Alf won’t listen to him. Marilyn asks Alf if they can talk on her break.
Eden and Cash arrive back at the Lyrik house. Eden says she’s never heard Cash talk like this before. Cash says every time he closes his eyes he thinks about what he wants to do to Jeremy. He agrees with Eden that they should go away for a while and that Tane will look after Felicity, deciding to just drive and see where they end up.
As they finish the meal, Victoria asks Rose where she comes from and what she does for a living. There’s an awkward pause before Mali tells her Rose is a cop. Victoria asks Elandra if she knew and Elandra says she didn’t. Victoria announces they’re leaving. Elandra tells Mali he messed up. Back at the coffee cart, Marilyn asks Alf about Roo before asking about him and saying it’s easy to brush things under the carpet. Alf realises she’s been talking to John and insists there’s nothing to worry about.
Mali follows Victoria and Elandra back to the car, with Rose hanging back. Victoria says she has nothing to say to Mali: She thought he was his father’s son but his father would be ashamed of him.
