Extended Summary

Nikau is resuscitating a dummy on the beach under John’s direction. John congratulates him and calls a short break. Bella is standing nearby and tells Nikau she found it really hot. Nikau is pleased to see her with her camera again. John calls Nikau over to the class and Bella leaves. However, Nikau suddenly bolts to the surf club. John follows him and Nikau claims he felt thirsty. John suspects he was actually nervous and tells him it’s just an assessment: He needs it to become fully-fledged but can always take it again. Nikau goes back with him.

At the Diner, paramedics have loaded Marilyn onto a trolley. Irene tries to calm her before she’s taken away, saying she’ll be looked after. At the hospital, Logan tries to stop Dean leaving. Dean says he had to give up football after his last accident and now he has to give up surfing. Logan says just because there’s no guarantee doesn’t mean he definitely won’t surf again, and they’ll cross that bridge if they come to it. He convinces Dean to get reassessed by the physio and asks Jasmine to page her.

Irene fills Bella in on what happened with Marilyn. Bella wonders why Irene isn’t there. Irene thinks Marilyn wouldn’t want to see her. She says it’s good to see Bella with her camera. Bella says to blame Dean and Ziggy but doesn’t think it’s got her anywhere: She quit her fashion job, dropped out of TAFE and got sacked from Salt, so she’s just a drifter with a camera. Irene suggests she could make money taking photographs.

At the hospital, Jasmine is settling Marilyn. Logan comes over but Marilyn insists on another doctor. Logan wants to assess her first but Marilyn refuses to let him near her. Dean can overhear Marilyn from the next room where Clare is assessing him and says she’ll send him new exercises. Jasmine convinces Logan to leave Marilyn. He goes over to Dean, who’s been listening in. Dean says he could be surfing by now if he’d had the operation Tori wanted him to before Logan overruled her.

Nikau finishes a run on the beach with another of the class. John says it’s not a race but congratulates him. Nikau asks if he passed but John says he hasn’t totted up the results yet. He tells the class to wash down the boards and meet him at the surf club afterwards. Shortly after, Bella is pestering John at the surf club, trying to get him to hire her as a photographer. John tells her to send him an e-mail. Bella wonders if that was a no. Nikau says if it was, John would have said so.

Jasmine tells Logan that Doctor Singh is with Marilyn. Logan wants to go and see her but Jasmine asks him not to, since she’s only just calmed down. Logan realises Jasmine knows about the complaint. Jasmine says she’s been asked to make a statement but will tell them that Logan did everything right: It’s just sometimes patients expect doctors to have all the answers. Meanwhile, Dean arrives home. He gets a text from Ziggy asking how it went and texts back saying “All good.” He goes to the fridge and tears down Jai’s drawings of him surfing and the photo of him and Ziggy as carnival champions, also binning his surfing trophy.

Jasmine shows Logan the list of tests that Doctor Singh has ordered. Logan thinks some of them are irrelevant and Jasmine suggests Singh’s just being thorough. Logan thinks it might be psychological but Jasmine isn’t convinced, thinking it’s related to the organophosphate poisoning. Logan snaps in frustration at not being able to see patients and goes to the office. Jasmine tells Marilyn she’ll be moved to a ward for observation. Marilyn is worried but accepts it’s the right thing. Irene appears with some flowers and says she’s called Justin. Marilyn asks her to stay. Jasmine goes back to Logan and tells him Marilyn’s been moved up to the ward. Logan indicates he’s taking leave until after the tribunal. Jasmine thinks he’ll be cleared but Logan says even if that complaint’s dismissed, Dean will probably make one to replace it.

John reads out the results, saying Jake topped the class. He reads out two more results (one pass and one fail) before telling Nikau he passed with flying colours. Nikau is delighted and Bella congratulates him. She decides to go and see Dean, heading to the farm house. Dean is pleased, but rather muted, to see her with the camera again. She tells him she wants to be a freelance photographer and offers to take photos for the board shop website to advertise. Dean tells her he can’t surf again. Bella tries to sympathise but Dean just yells that she doesn’t understand.

John has taken Nikau to Salt for a beer. Nikau asks about the roster but John has something else on his mind: He wants Nikau to help with the neighbourhood watch he’s setting up. Nikau is less than keen. Bella arrives and says things didn’t go well with Dean. Nikau tries to leave with her but John says he hasn’t finished his beer and convinces them both to stay. Meanwhile, Jasmine has called round to see Dean. She tries to convince him that Logan saved his life but Dean is convinced that Logan’s the reason why he’s never going to surf again and tells her not to expect him to be grateful.
