Colby’s trial begins with a bombshell as the identity of Witness X is revealed. Marilyn hides the true reason she’s on a dating app.
Extended Summary
Colby and Dean are on the beach with their boards. After spending a lot of time looking out to sea in silence, Colby reminisces about his first barrel and the old guy he dropped in on. Dean says they’ll do it again when this is over. Colby notes Angelo and Witness X might have something to do with it but Dean suggests the witness has nothing. He sends Colby on ahead and looks a lot less certain when he’s gone. Back at the flat, Willow tells Bella, who’s just got up, about the boys going down to the sea. Bella wonders if the witness knows they’re destroying a family. Willow tells her she’ll still see Colby if he’s in jail and has family other than him. Bella says Colby’s her brother but Willow says there are people that care for her and will make sure she’s looked after whatever happens. Bella says she’s glad she’s got Willow and Dean. Bella gets a call from Nikau and says she doesn’t need him to be there.
Roo comes downstairs and Alf asks how she’s doing. Roo says she dropped off around three but knows that she did the right thing breaking up with Owen. Throughout, Marilyn keeps getting wolf whistle alerts on her phone. Alf asks her to put it on silent but she says she wouldn’t hear it. Alf threatens to ban it from the house, saying he’s said the same to John at the surf club. Marilyn says then he wouldn’t be able to call Martha. Alf gives up and leaves. At the Diner flat, Dean tells Willow that they’ve only survived this long by sticking together and thinks he should own up to his part in it. He says Colby’s his best mate but Willow says Dean’s hers and to promise not to do anything stupid. Colby and Bella emerge from their rooms and they head out.
The foursome come down the stairs from the flat. Colby pauses and looks about, and Bella ushers him on. They run into Alf and Irene who wish them luck, with Irene saying it’s a disgrace. She apologises that she has to work at the Diner instead of supporting Bella and asks Willow to keep an eye on her. The group head to the court and see Taylor outside. Colby notes she’s still giving evidence and witnesses have to wait outside until they’re called. Nearby, Angelo is telling a reporter he’s confident of a conviction. Colby’s lawyer appears and is pleased at his support. Willow takes Colby aside and suggests it might not be good for Bella to have to listen to the full forensic details and photos of Ross. Colby agrees and Willow offers to stay outside with her. Colby and Dean go in.
At the Diner, Irene tries to talk to Roo about Owen, with them noting he’s still part of the family but will stay away for a while. Marilyn keeps getting the wolf whistle alerts throughout. Irene suspiciously asks if she’s only joined up because of John. Marilyn denies it, saying she’s just window shopping. She and Roo start looking through the pictures of her admirers. Irene goes outside and joins Alf. Both are fed up of the app and Alf says both Martha and Ryder think it is because of John. They wonder what’s going on at court, hoping things go Colby’s way.
The prosecutor is questioning Angelo, who talks about the history of abuse between Colby and Ross and the fact Colby said he was glad Ross was dead. Taylor slips into court. Dean notices and points her out to Colby, who asks his lawyer what’s going on. She says Taylor must have been removed from the witness list. The judge chides them for talking and Angelo stands down. At the Diner, Irene tells Roo that she’s not sure Bella could cope with losing anyone else and isn’t sure Colby will be found innocent. Marilyn is still getting regular loud alerts and Roo says Irene might be right about her and John. A phone rings and Irene snaps at Marilyn but she and Roo point out it’s Irene’s phone: Willow is ringing her.
The defence lawyer is protesting against the use of a recording and the judge invites her and the prosecutor to approach the bench. Dean quietly asks Colby what it’s about. Colby doesn’t think it’s the recordings of him and Taylor since she’s there. Bella joins Dean, saying Willow’s on the phone to Irene, as the judge allows the recording. The file plays, and everyone hears Colby’s conversation with Willow about his attempts to cover his tracks and that he killed Ross. Dean protests to Colby’s lawyer and demands to see a warrant. The judge says the bailiff will remove the next person who calls out. The prosecutor calls Willow and the door swings open to reveal her standing there. Colby looks disbelieving. At the Diner, Irene tells Roo that Willow sounded panicky. Marilyn gets another alert and Irene snaps, saying she knows it’s a contest with John and it seems like Marilyn’s laughing at him when he’s trying to move on, noting they should all be kinder to each other. Marilyn decides to take her break.
On the stand, Willow says that Colby told her he’d killed Ross while she was in hospital, so she’d know she was safe, and as far as she’s aware no-one else knows. She relates Colby and Dean chasing Ross and having their tyres shot out and commandeering another car. She then says Colby dropped Dean off, tracked Ross down, shot and buried him and told Dean he’d lost him. Dean angrily asks why she’s doing this. The judge orders him removed and Dean is dragged out, still yelling angrily. Colby’s lawyer stops him intervening. Outside, a short time later, Dean and Bella wonder why Willow’s done this. Seeing Angelo, Bella accuses him of threatening or blackmailing Willow. Angelo says Willow came to him and Colby’s the one she should be angry with. A court official calls them back in and Angelo warns Dean to keep it together this time.
Alf finds Marilyn sat near the bait shop looking miserable but she refuses to talk about it so he hands her over to Roo. Roo suggests they go for a chat. As they walk through a park, Roo wonders if Marilyn is really doing it to compete with John. Marilyn says it started off as curiosity and she enjoyed the response. They discuss Roo’s break-up with Owen. Roo says she was happy before him and will be again. Marilyn decides to delete the app. After Roo’s gone, she prepares to do so, but stops when she gets more alerts, giggling with delight.
Colby is telling his lawyer that he wants to take the stand, which she advises against. However, when court resumes, she announces his intention and the judge allows it. Dean, Bella, Willow, Taylor and Angelo all look on, with Angelo seeming particularly apprehensive. Colby is sworn in.
