Extended Summary
Outside the surf club, Ryder is trying to demonstrate a surfing move to Bella but she is showing little interest. Ryder tells her the police will find who killed her dad. Bella sees Willow and goes over to talk to her, asking why she hasn’t been answering calls. Willow says she was out with Amber. Bella explains about the detective wanting to interview Colby and Dean. Willow insists Colby can handle it. Nikau approaches with Ryder and asks Bella if she’s okay. At the police station, Colby relates how he and Dean chased after Ross, he shot out their tyres and they commandeered another vehicle. He says they searched for him for hours. Angelo notes that’s nearly word for word what was in his original statement. He also admits Chelsea had nothing to add. He asks if Colby was relieved Ross was dead. Colby says he wasn’t surprised since Ross had lots of enemies. Angelo asks what it was like growing up with someone like that.
Irene and Jasmine walk along the beach towards the Diner. Jasmine says she’s heard nothing from Tori since she gave her the photo album, admitting it was photos of her and Grace and sometimes Robbo as if Tori didn’t exist. They see Willow heading towards the flat; Jasmine reminds her she’s meant to be opening the gym but Willow says she has to check on Dean first. Jasmine dryly notes that it looks like she’s opening it. Willow finds Dean in the flat; he explains he dropped Ziggy at the garage and Justin’s in the city with Ava. Willow tries to reassure him about Angelo, saying Colby knows how to handle it and they just need to stick to the story. Dean worries that Colby is too confident.
Angelo asks Colby if he thinks someone helped Ross hide Bella. Colby doesn’t but does suggest he had a mate with a second car waiting which if why they didn’t find him. Angelo wonders why Colby stayed living with Ross and Colby says he didn’t want to leave Bella and Michelle alone with him. Angelo says Colby’s medical records, with the details of his abuse by Ross, were in the file and notes Ross’ death would have given him closure. Colby accuses him of trying to find a motive. Angelo sees Dean in the reception and closes the blind. At the surf club, Ryder is surprised Bella didn’t tell him about Colby being interviewed. Neither he nor Nikau understand what the problem is so Bella dismisses it and challenges Ryder to pool. Nearby, Jasmine is telling gym customers that the class is cancelled when Willow appears and says she’ll join them in two minutes. Jasmine is unhappy that Willow didn’t tell her what she was doing.
Angelo points out Ross killed both Colby’s parents. He asks what he was like with Bella and Colby says Ross never touched her. Angelo says he needs to know what sort of person the victim was. Colby angrily says Ross wasn’t a victim and calls the questions disrespectful. Angelo apologises in a faux polite manner and lets Colby go. Colby walks past Dean who Angelo calls in. At the surf club, Ryder is bewildered that he’s about to win against Bella and pots the last ball despite Nikau trying to put him off. Bella, sat some way apart, is crying, worried that she hasn’t heard from Colby, and Nikau says they’ll go for a walk. Ryder moves to go with them but Nikau suggests he might be a third wheel.
Dean has given an account that matches his statement. He asks Angelo about forensics and Angelo notes Ross could have died the day they saw him or as much as a month later. He asks about Colby growing up with Ross. Dean says there’s a long list of people who won’t be sorry that Ross is dead. Near the beach, Bella thanks Nikau for being with her. She sees Colby sat nearby and goes to talk to him. Colby tells her about Angelo asking questions about his childhood and notes he’s got hundreds of motives. He insists he’s fine.
Bella goes into the surf club and finds Willow. She tells her what happened between Colby and Angelo and suggests Willow go check on him. Meanwhile, Colby has a shower, looking upset. Willow goes to the gym and tells Jasmine she has to take the rest of the day off to help Colby. Jasmine is unimpressed that Willow won’t tell her why and says she’s meant to be the manager. Willow retorts that Jasmine disappeared for weeks, leaving her to pick up the pieces and not responding to her messages.
Willow finds Colby at the flat. Colby says Angelo caught him off guard but insists he’s fine now. Willow wonders if he should talk to someone about Ross. Colby says he has to focus on the investigation but admits he can’t stop thinking about it. At the police station, Angelo asks Dean if Colby was worried about Ross turning up. Dean says they asked around his old haunts but just found dead ends, adding he can give a list of people they spoke to. (Angelo hands him a pad.) Angelo wonders what Colby would have done if he found Ross. Dean says Colby wanted Ross brought in front of a court and locked up for good. Angelo lets him go and says to get Colby to call him.
At the Diner, Irene reminds Jasmine that Colby needs support over Ross’ body being found. Jasmine says she’d have given Willow time off for that if she’d been reasonable. Irene points out Willow has supported her. Meanwhile, Dean arrives back at the flat. He tells Colby and Willow that Angelo has nothing but Colby says Angelo is smart. Dean notes Angelo wanted Colby to phone him. Colby does so and isn’t happy about what he hears.
Ryder, Bella and Nikau are having a pizza at Salt, although Bella isn’t eating. Ryder says he’ll pay with his staff discount and Nikau invites them back to his for a swim, prompting Ryder to jokingly accuse him of always mentioning he has a pool. Bella gets a text from Colby and goes home. Colby explains Angelo wants Bella and Willow to come in for an interview. Bella worries she’ll say the wrong thing and get Colby and Dean in trouble. Dean points out it’ll look bad if she doesn’t turn up and Colby agrees that there’s no way out of it.
