Extended Summary

Ari joins Alf and Marilyn at the hospital and asks how John’s doing. Tori emerges and tells them they’ve given John platelets to make up for the blood loss, which was a side effect of the anti-clotting medication. They will give him another CT scan to check the medication has worked. At the Parata house, Tane has got dressed. Mackenzie wants an answer to her question but Tane wants her to answer one first: Is she hungry? Mackenzie says no but Tane says he is and goes to make breakfast.

Irene asks Jasmine what her plans for the day are and if she’s seeing Grace. Jasmine says probably not since Justin has her. Willow comes home on her break but Jasmine goes into her room. Irene heads off to work. Willow goes to Jasmine’s room and tries to talk but Jasmine shuts the door on her. Shortly after, Willow relates the incident to Irene outside the Diner. Irene notes Jasmine isn’t doing herself any favours by pushing everyone away. Colby comes along and Willow says she’s losing her best friend because of him: Instead of sorting himself out with Bella gone, he’s created a mess and dragged her into it.

Tane finishes eating and he and Mackenzie banter about his appetite. Mackenzie asks him again if he’s using her to get at Ari. After a bit more prevarication, Tane says he was, but now he’s got to know her he thinks they’d be good together. Mackenzie rejects the idea and leaves. She finds Ari at Salt; he insists it was Tane he was mad with, not her. Mackenzie thinks he’s wrong about Tane and wishes the brothers could talk to each other the way they talk to her. She recalls what Tane said about looking up to Ari and suggests they get to know each other.

John is taken back to his room as Tori tells Alf and Marilyn that the medication has worked but the clot did more damage than expected and John will need therapy to get his movement back. John listens in unnoticed. Meanwhile, Jasmine is in a park area, looking at the forum on her laptop and complaining about friends judging her. Colby comes along and asks to talk, saying both he and Willow are worried about her. Jasmine isn’t impressed, assuming that Willow asked Colby to talk to her. Colby tells her not to blame Willow for his mistakes.

Ari finds Tane sat outside the surf club and notes Mackenzie seems to have a high opinion of him. He suggests that since the family’s back together they should try and get on. They reminisce about hangis in the old days, how Tane was first interested in digging them and then in the food. Mackenzie watches from the balcony. Ari asks Tane if he’s going to stop trying to stuff things up between him and Mackenzie. Tane says not everything’s about Ari. Ari gets annoyed and storms off. Later, Mackenzie finds Tane on the beach. She thinks both he and Ari want to sort things out but Tane considers it a lost cause. Mackenzie says he’s a good man. Tane looks like he’s going to kiss her but Mackenzie pulls back, saying she doesn’t want to be caught in the middle. She walks away.

Alf and Marilyn watch as Tori gives John tests, getting him to lift his right hand a little bit. All are encouraging but John thinks it’s not good enough. Later, Marilyn is adjusting John’s sheets and wiping his mouth despite him telling her not to fuss. Alf comes back in from calling Martha. Marilyn decides she should call Jett but John tells her not to. Tori convinces Alf to take Marilyn for a coffee, before checking with John it’s okay for her to stay and trying to tell him things will get better.

Tane turns up at Salt and tells Mackenzie he doesn’t want her to be caught in the middle either so he’s going to back off. Ari comes in and Tane give him a placating gesture before leaving. Mackenzie tells Ari to take a seat. Back at the hospital, Alf tells John that Marilyn’s sorting out her make-up. John asks him for a favour: Take Marilyn home. Alf protests but John says he doesn’t want her to see him like this.

Irene and Willow are at home when Jasmine comes back and says she wants them both to hear what she’s got to say. She starts off talking about how Colby has told her she’s being hard on Willow, but her tone becomes increasingly harsher as she asks if they gossiped about her over beer and pizza or talked about her in public. Willow protests but Jasmine won’t listen. Soon after, Willow turns up at Colby’s flat saying she needs a place to stay: Jasmine has forced her to move out and fired her.

Alf intercepts Marilyn as she heads towards John’s room, suggesting she must be tired and should come back to theirs for a rest. Marilyn initially tries to stay there, then wants to say goodbye to John, but Alf says he’s sleeping and steers her away. Meanwhile, Irene greets Colby as he turns up at the beach house. She notes she’s meant to be visiting Damian in New Zealand but isn’t sure she can leave Willow and Jasmine alone. Colby tells her she should go. He goes to Jasmine’s room. Jasmine tries to get rid of him but Colby isn’t willing to let things stay as they are between her and Willow. He says this is obviously about more than their kiss and wants to know what’s going on.
