Will Dean swallow his pride, repair things with Mackenzie and ask for his job back? An overwhelmed Irene questions what to do without Bella’s testimony in court. Jasmine and Robbo are going stir crazy in the motel as the investigation continues to take over their lives.
Extended Summary
Willow finds Dean outside the surf club. He says taking the job was a mistake and complains about people not locking their doors, before walking away. Willow sees Mackenzie on the balcony and starts to say something, then decides not to. Despite this, Mackenzie follows her into the gym, asking what excuse Dean gave. Willow says he didn’t say anything and they should sort it out between them. Mackenzie complains about him risking losing his probation by not having a job, then apologises for ranting to Willow and leaves.
Irene is having a heated phone conversation with her lawyer at the Diner, saying she knows it’s her best shot but Bella isn’t testifying. Leah comes in and Irene explains about it being too difficult for Bella, adding that it’s left her in real trouble. At the motel, Robbo has pinned up a makeshift evidence room board and is staring hard at it. Jasmine tries to ask him about what takeaway he wants but Robbo tells her to choose. He continues to ignore her attempts at conversation as he muses that they all thought Dylan was dead.
Willow finds Dean near the beach and comments on Mackenzie thinking he’s still on probation when Willow knows it’s over: Since it happened because of her, she’s been counting the days. She advises Dean to tell Mackenzie the truth, saying that she’s seen him get angry with his boss and get fired plenty of times but he’s never cared before, meaning he wants the job. Dean goes back to Salt and Mackenzie asks if he’s there for round two, saying she’s busy so he can either eat, drink or leave. Dean says he will eat something. After a few seconds looking at the menu, he asks about specials.
Robbo is having a frustrating phone conversation with Lance, who has no useful information. Jasmine is annoyed that he expects her to answer the door when the takeaway arrives. Robbo finds she has moved his files and says he needs to know which ones he’s looked at; Jasmine retorts that he’s looked at all of them. Robbo insists he’s trying to keep them alive and storms out. He goes to the gym and asks Willow if she needs any help with the books, invoices or rosters. Willow says it’s all fine and wonders why he’s there and how Jasmine is. Robbo quickly leaves, saying she has a class.
Robbo heads up to Salt and asks Mackenzie for two beers. He goes over to where Dean is eating and gives one of them to him. Dean is bemused as Robbo asks for updates on Colby, Bella and Ziggy. At the Diner, Leah takes Irene to the table where Justin and Marilyn are waiting and gets her to explain the situation to them. Irene maintains that they can’t force Bella to testify, pointing out the others wouldn’t let Ava or Raffy do it. She can’t think of anything else however and leaves. The others muse that the lawyers could subpoena Bella but want to find another way.
Jasmine, alone in the motel room, picks up a file on Dylan and starts to read it. At the same time, Robbo asks Dean about Dylan. Dean has never heard of him, with Robbo admitting it was before Dean came to the Bay, but says he can ask around the Boys. Robbo leaves as Willow arrives; Dean thinks he just needed someone to talk to and Willow is a bit put-out that he didn’t talk to her. She chats briefly to Mackenzie about how long Dean’s taking to eat. She goes back to Dean and tells him to man up and apologise but instead he walks out.
Willow follows Dean into the gym and comments that he’s off probation, he’s got a decent girlfriend, his mum isn’t causing trouble and his sister wants to get to know him: Things are good and, what’s more, he’s becoming a grown-up. She adds that becoming legit is actually quite good. Dean goes back to Mackenzie and says he was a muppet. With a bit of prompting, he apologises and asks for his job back. Mackenzie says she needs someone who’ll turn up on time and Dean says he will. He admits it’s not his dream job but he likes having money for food and rent, and also working with her. He also promises to knock if he goes to see her and Colby in future. Mackenzie says he’s a got a job for as long as he wants it but has to let her know if there’s something that will make him happier.
Jasmine finishes reading the file and contemplates the box with the evidence on the murders of Robbo’s family in. Meanwhile, Robbo approaches Alf outside the bait shop and mentions Dylan to him. He asks if Alf remembers anyone being around when they first met. Alf points out it was a while back and Robbo had just hit him on the head but is certain there were no other boats on the beach. Robbo confirms it’s connected with when Alf found him in the dinghy but doesn’t say anything more.
Irene rejoins Leah, Marilyn and Justin and apologises for walking off. They tell her they’ve come up with a better idea than using Bella: They want to use her support group and social media to raise public support for her. Alf enters and tells them about Robbo. Back at the motel, Robbo finds Jasmine has cleared away all the evidence. She says they need a bit of normality. Robbo protests that he’s trying to keep them alive but Jasmine says not like this.
Leah and Justin enter the gym; Leah isn’t sure if their plan will work but notes it’s made Irene more positive. Willow approaches awkwardly and asks Justin how he gets hold of Tori. Justin says he can’t, he’s at their mercy. Willow is worried about Jasmine. At the motel, Jasmine is frustrated as Robbo replaces everything. Robbo says he’s keeping them safe but Jasmine says it’s not what she signed up for. Robbo opens the door and tells her to leave then. Jasmine is stopped by the guard but Robbo tells him to stand down and let her go. Jasmine walks away.
