Extended Summary

Mackenzie is on the beach as Colby and Dean come back from a surf, arguing about who did best. They ask Mackenzie for her opinion and she says that from what she could see Dean did. She asks if his shop does surfing lessons, since she thinks she should learn now she’s living there. Dean says they don’t but she can be the first; however, he can’t talk about it now, because he has to get to work. Colby asks why Mackenzie didn’t ask him. Near the surf club, Bella thanks Willow for letting her use her computer; Willows notes Bella was on it late into the night. They see Colby and Mackenzie together and Willow explains who Mackenzie is. Bella decides to bail on their swim and leaves as Colby approaches Willow for a catch-up.

Roo finds Alf working outside the bait shop and notes he hasn’t been there much lately. He says John’s at the surf club today and they debate whether or not his plan will work. John and Marilyn join them and tell them about their special dinner last night. Marilyn invites John in for a coffee and seems disappointed when he says he has to get to the surf club. Meanwhile, Ben tells Dean that the board blocks are on their way and are being delivered there. Nearby, John is on the phone to Jett, saying he hopes to be back to help with dinner. (He adds that he knows Jett can do it on his own but wants to help.) Ben approaches and asks about storing the blocks at the surf club. John is initially willing until he hears there’s a hundred of them and says it’s against health and safety.

At the Diner, Irene tells Willow that she’s decided she can’t go to the show because she needs to be there for Bella. Willow suggests she talk to Colby first, since she left him and Bella having breakfast together. And indeed, they’re currently at Salt. Colby asks Bella about her English assignment, having heard about it (but seemingly no details other than that there was one) from Willow. Bella says she’s not fighting with Irene any more and Roo helped her with the assignment. Mackenzie comes over and jokes about seeing Colby again. Colby introduces Bella and Mackenzie to each other; Mackenzie is surprised to learn he has a sister and offers pancakes on the house. Colby and Bella banter about who’s going to eat them.

Mackenzie approaches Dean and asks about the lesson, wondering if she should get a surf board first. Ben tells Dean he needs his help outside and Dean says he’ll be there once he’s finished. He tries to give Mackenzie advice on beginners’ boards but Mackenzie seems more interested in asking about Dean: Where he grew up, how he came to be there, how long he’s known Colby. Dean says if she’s not interested in a board he’s needed outside. He joins Ben who says the driver is nearly there and refusing to change his schedule to deliver elsewhere. Dean points out that John will be gone most of the week so they just have to stop him seeing the boards before he leaves. He tries to distract John with a suggestion of movie nights at the surf club but John isn’t interested. Seeing what’s going on, Mackenzie introduces herself to John and asks him to show her the ropes; he is happy to oblige. Ben and Dean get to work.

Irene asks Colby about his meal with Bella and then explains about the show, saying she’d have to be gone by the end of the week and would be there two weeks. She stresses she isn’t going to let Bella down but wonders if Colby could look after her if she goes. Colby says he’s actually been thinking about Bella coming back permanently. Irene isn’t sure if they’re ready but will put it to Bella. Irene and Willow head back to the beach house where Bella is chatting to Tommy online and Willow comments on losing another teen to the internet. Irene tells her about the show and about Colby’s offer. Willow suggests Bella could stay with her and Jasmine so Irene can still go but Bella says she misses Colby and is happy to move back in with him.

In Salt, John is still chatting away to Mackenzie, who is doing her best to stroke his ego. Dean comes in and Mackenzie suggests that John might have other things to do. John confirms that he needs to get the paperwork to Alf. Mackenzie and Dean exchange smiles. Mackenzie exits the surf club and ignores another call from her dad. She runs into Colby and chats to him about Bella. Colby asks if she has any siblings and she says she’s the only child of a broken marriage. Bella watches them from a distance. After Mackenzie’s gone, Bella tells Colby she doesn’t want to move back in with him.

Bella finds Willow in the gym and asks if she was serious about looking after her; she doesn’t want to stop Irene going but she doesn’t want to move back in with Colby. She says she thinks Colby’s interested in Mackenzie. Willow says he said he wasn’t but Bella points out Dean said the same thing about Ziggy. She doesn’t want to get between them, feeling it was her fault he broke up with Chelsea. Outside the Diner, John gives Alf the rundown of what he’s done and what he’s going to e-mail him from the city. Alf is actually impressed. Roo and Marilyn join them and, while John and Marilyn go off, Alf admits to Roo that John’s plan might work.

Willow has summoned Dean to the gym where she explains what Bella said and asks him about Colby and Mackenzie. Dean isn’t sure about Mackenzie but is convinced Colby isn’t over Chelsea, pointing out he’s still wearing his wedding ring. He advises Willow to talk to Colby. She tracks him down on the beach where he is wondering why Bella changed her mind when Irene said she was keen. Willow explains Bella picked up on the vibe between him and Mackenzie and also blames herself for what happened with Chelsea.

Mackenzie notices she has another missed call from her dad. She approaches Dean saying she hopes there was a good reason for her being bored by John before; Dean thanks her but says it’s best she doesn’t know the details. Mackenzie again questions him about how long he’s been in the Bay and his family. Dean says if she’s interested in him or Colby then he’s taken and Colby’s just gone through a break-up. Mackenzie says it’s neither of those: She’s Dean’s sister. Back at the beach house, Colby stresses to Bella that he isn’t interested in Mackenzie and he was the one to blame for what happened with Chelsea. He says he loved Chelsea and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and isn’t expecting that with anyone else. Bella thinks that’s sad but Colby says he’s lucky to have had it once. He asks Bella to move back in and she agrees.

Dean and Mackenzie have relocated to outside the surf club where Mackenzie explains Rick cheated on her mum with Dean’s. Dean insists he doesn’t have a sister. Mackenzie says he has two, reminding him that he met Kayla who has a brother, Sean (“the golden child”). She says a few months ago she did some digging and found out about the house Rick bought Karen, working the rest out from there. As Willow approaches, she says they can talk later and heads back inside. Dean tells Willow who Mackenzie is. They wonder what she’s doing there.
