Extended Summary
Justin comes up from the beach and finds Brody unpacking a delivery outside Salt. He asks him if he went home to his wife last night. Brody doesn’t want to have the conversation but Justin says he played the perfect husband with Ziggy then went straight back to chasing Simone. Brody says Simone doesn’t want anything to do with him. Justin thinks this is a good thing and he can have a fresh start with Ziggy. Brody doesn’t seem convinced. At the Diner, Colby asks Bella what classes she has and she explains she’s working with Simone. Colby says that now Ben’s finished her room, he wants to get some furniture for it, with a bed and a desk. Bella thinks she’ll always be the class dummy and Colby tries to reassure her. They head to the counter where Irene gives Bella a packed lunch on the house; Bella jokes about Colby’s inability to buy food.
Maggie is on the phone in her office with Simone present. A teacher has called off sick and Maggie asks Simone if she can take the Year 9 gym session; Simone awkwardly agrees but Maggie assures her she was kidding. Simone has worked out a plan for Bella but Maggie needs to organise cover so says they’ll talk at the end of the day. Simone finds Colby and Bella at reception and sends Bella to the room they used before. She offers Colby the number of a family counsellor but Colby refuses it. Simone rejoins Bella who asks if she’s always going to go running to Colby: Bella thinks she’s to blame for Chelsea leaving and doesn’t want to put him under more pressure. Simone says normally the sessions are confidential; she will need to discuss things with Maggie and the other teachers but will clear it with Bella first.
Outside the bait shop, Justin is complaining about Alf getting him to fix the same motor over and over again and thinks it needs replacing, while Alf thinks people are too quick to throw things away. Colby draws up in his ute, having got the flat pack furniture for Bella’s room. However, he admits he’d forgotten about the stairs and Justin volunteers to help him with it. Back at the school, Simone is teaching Bella how to structure essays. She thinks Bella has a lot of good ideas and wants her to go back into English classes, saying she’ll be there to help her.
Justin and Colby move the last of the packs up into the Diner flat. Justin offers to stay and help but Colby wants to do it on his own. McCarthy turns up as Justin leaves and tells Colby it’s official business: There’s still no word on Ross but Homicide in every state is looking out for him. Colby downplays the chances of finding him and says McCarthy doesn’t have to give him updates unless there’s anything solid. McCarthy says that’s not why he’s there: He wants to know when Colby is returning to work. Colby says he’s not coming back to the police station or going ahead with the transfer; he needs to focus on Bella. McCarthy is disappointed but says he’ll organise the paperwork.
Irene collects some supplies from Brody outside the Diner. After she’s gone, Simone comes along. Brody tries to talk to her but Simone says it’s clear he’s chosen Ziggy so he needs to let her move on as well. Brody watches as she heads up to the flat. There, she tells Colby that Bella’s given her permission to discuss some subject changes: Bella wants to do Ancient History instead of Modern History and also Photography instead of Biology. Colby is fine with all of it. Simone again tries to give him the counsellor’s number but again he refuses.
At the surf club, Justin shows Alf the part that was causing the problems, saying he’s order a replacement. They run into Maggie, who has been collecting things from the gym for the Year 9 lesson. She spots Brody and notes she owes him a family dinner for bringing Simone to town, inviting him and Ziggy over that evening. Justin asks Brody why he looks like he’s going to be sick. Meanwhile, Bella arrives home and tells Colby that Simone let her out early because they were finished. She notes there’s still no food in the fridge but Colby covers her eyes and shows her her room. Bella is delighted but is worried about him putting himself to trouble because of her. Colby insists he’s fine and loves having her around.
Colby heads to the school and asks Simone what she’s been saying to Bella. Simone denies talking to her about the counsellor but Colby tells her she’s making things worse. Shortly after, Colby meets Bella outside the Diner but Simone follows him and asks to talk to Colby. Colby says she can talk in front of Bella. Simone again tries to get him to accept help but Colby says they don’t need counselling or people checking up on them and takes Bella away. Brody approaches and asks Simone if Colby is what she means by moving on. Simone says she’s not going to throw herself at the nearest man just because he doesn’t want her and says everything’s his fault for not knowing what he wants.
That evening, Colby checks on Bella in her new room. Although she continues to say positive things about it, Bella seems slightly withdrawn, checking that things are going to be all right. Colby leaves her to sleep. Meanwhile, Brody shows up at the Morgan house and tells Justin he sent Ziggy to the family dinner, claiming he was sick. He says it’s Simone he wants; he can’t function without her. Justin wonders, if he’s 100% sure he wants Simone and not Ziggy, what he’s going to do.
McCarthy (in civvies) joins Colby with the resignation papers, although he still isn’t keen on him leaving. He reminds him how hard he fought to get his job back. Colby reiterates that he needs to focus on Bella, unaware that Bella can hear him in her room. Next morning, Colby goes for a surf. Back in the flat, Bella hefts a bag, leaves a note to Colby by the resignation papers and walks out.
